State officials revealed Friday that the mystery object blocking tunnel machine Bertha is a long steel pipe, left buried in 2002 by one of the Highway 99 project’s own research crews.

The culprit is an 8-inch diameter, 119-foot-long well casing, used to measure groundwater for the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project, officials said.

yeah i know i just wanted to make that joke. didn't realize they had been surveying in advance of a tunnel all the way back in 2002 though
EDIT: also for non-seattlers this tunnel will have no downtown exits and a large toll, making it utterly useless and predicted to have less than 1/3 the traffic than the viaduct it replaces

i'm 100% in favor of just tearing the fucker down, burying bertha/fishmech and forgetting it ever existed, and just using the money on busses/lightrail/pretending to think about maybe doing a subway

the UW/cap hill light rail project is months ahead of schedule and way under budget so at least we got that

when they tore the west side elevated highway down below 59th street, they totally should have built a tunneled version of it under the surface level replacement, which would have allowed both express traffic down the west side of manhattan and allowed the surface boulevard to be narrower and thus easier to cross.

This is hardly the fault of Bitcoin. That’s like blaming a car company for selling a car, but no local businesses change it’s oil, or the person doesn’t live near a gas station.

What is important is he did get his Bitcoin. This is an opportunity for bIG business in Uganda. Many businesses. Nobody is saying Bitcoin is ready to be moved as freely as a dollar. They said the same thing about the internet 20 years ago. The Internet didn’t have search engines 20 years ago. Did that make the Internet a bad invention, or just nascent? Growing pains. Bitcoin is 5 years old. We;ve all grown and improved A LOT since we were 5 years old. Bitcoin will run everything when it’s 15 or 20 years on.
