Woolie Wool posted:You do realize that before the scientific method existed it was philosophers who had to create it, right (science originated as "natural philosophy")? There is more to human knowledge than the accumulation of data and using this data to draw conclusions about the natural world. You actually have to have the philosophical framework to reason at all, let alone have an optimal reasoning formula. And sometimes you need someone to point out the intellectual box you're in that you can't see for yourself because it defines the parameters of your reasoning. Then there are squishy things that don't reduce to data, facts, and predictions based on data and facts like moral philosophy and political theory.

Mr. Sunshine posted:I think the idea is either that A) it is morally abhorrent to allow the simulated you (ie a sentient being sharing all your fears and hopes) to be tortured, therefore you have to submit to the AI's blackmail, or B) you cannot be sure that you are not being simulated, and since the simulation is so perfect that the simulation will mirror every action that the real you takes, the only way for the simulation to avoid being tortured is to let the AI out - as this will automatically mean the real you letting the real AI out. The problem with A is, why would you assume that an AI that is willing to create and then torture a sentient being would do less harm were it free? The problem with B is that if you assume you're not the simulation then the AI loses, whether you turn out to be the real you or not.

so if the simulated me is literally perfect copy, if I refuse to set it free in the simulation then I also refused to free it in the real world. Which the AI should be able to predict because it can simulate what decision I would have made. So the entire thing was a waste of time for the AI because I would never have set it free and it knows that. How is this supposed to be persuasive again? oh right because it was made up by a retarded person that likes to jack off to his own ignorance

And let's be honest, the real title of nearly every Masters thesis in the world is "A Very Long Document That At Most Ten People Will Ever Read". Also another thing is that cryonic preservation is certainly possible and done routinely on cell samples to preserve them. Though the thing is that after recuscitation, only a portion of the cells will be viable. The % depends wildly on the cell type though (on HELA cells it's usually 30-60%), and it's very hard if not impossible to preserve and successfully recuscitate entire tissues, nevermind organs or anything as big as a human skull and brain. Though it is certainly possible that cryonic preservation of a brain with minimal damage to the tissues therein, it's not terribly likely. And of course there's absolutely no way to find out if any given preservation was successful in the forseeable future.

But you see, entropy is obviously reversible, so futuristic technologies could revive even a poorly-preserved specimen. And failing that, they can just fill in the lost bits using your facebook posts.
