I may well come back to the thread to ask about specific areas once my plans have clarified a little bit (currently they are: get a car in Denver airport. See what happens.) Those two also don't get a ton of distribution so visiting the brewery is recommended for those. as far as breweries just to be on the lookout for on draft at random bars: Faction, Fieldwork, Altamont, Berryessa, and maybe Knee Deep. Cellarmaker were at CBC this year, weren't they? That's a pretty quick rise. Also hell yes Rare Barrel - I love specialist breweries like that. Might have to go by myself rather than drag friends but I'm looking forward to it! Also excited about going to the wonderful dive that is Toronado again.

Portland just started getting Knee Deep and so far I am totally unimpressed. Hoptologist was all resin and bitterness. Simtra is just boring. There are so many breweries making great hoppy beers, I don't understand how these guys gained a reputation for their IPAs.

Lupulin River is fantastic. They have some other great hoppy stuff, but they aren't blowing the world away per se - they are just well above average and relatively easy to get and widely distributed. Being in Portland I assume you can fill a Doc Marten with Boneyard beer at every corner store so you're a bit spoiled

Carton just re-brewed Digger, a wheat ale brewed with lemongrass and clams. I thought it tasted like "the bay at low tide" which is not really a flavor that I want to drink a lot of, but they certainly captured what they were going for.

There were a few cases of Knee Deep that made their (possibly grey market) way into the UK last year. They sure were... big C hop big. Possibly more exciting when fresher, but honestly can't everyone brew a massive CCCC IPA these days?

Has anyone tried Jolly Pumpkin Rojzilla or La Roja du Kriek? It looks like the former has been in Chicago but I haven't seen the latter yet. Granted, I haven't been looking very hard. Regardless, I picked up a bottle of the Rojzilla and am debating whether to buy more and also, if it's worth trying to track the Kriek down.

Rojzilla is loving great. It tastes like liquid oak. Where have you seen a bottle recently? I'd pick up a couple... The Kriek was okay. Not as good as 'zilla.

Rojzilla is great and I would pick up another one if I spotted it. Have not seen the kriek. On another note, Pipeworks Ninja vs Unicorn is out in cans now. Tasty and definitely worth buying at $12/4.

So, I popped that 08-08-08 Vertical Epic just now. Verdict: not too good. It's still well-carbed, but the nose has only a few vague hints of honey and esters. The mouthfeel is kind of buttery, but without any noticeable diacetyl. Lots of bitterness still present, but almost no hop character (what a surprise). Whatever yeast or malt character there might have been has heavily receded, leaving only that buttery mouthfeel, an initial hit of bitterness with some honey-ish sweetness and stale malt, and a LOOONG finish reminiscent of wet cardboard and ash. Reminds me of a really stale IPA, just with some Belgian yeast character. Drainpoured after about a quarter of a glass.

4 Hands Passion Fruit Prussian is a nice Berliner. Recommended for the $10/4 pack price. The Wiseacre/Off Color collab Future Ancestor is, unsurprising, unique. Heaver lager sweetness accentuated with actual sugar. It's not quite cloying, in part because of the very light tartness, but it's not exactly the most drinkable. For $5/bomber, it's worth a try I guess.

I had the Wingman cucumber brett ale thing. It was delicious despite the nose having a strong sulfur/old hardboiled egg smell. It could have been been a lil less sweet but the umami funkiness was weirdly refreshing when combined with cucumber.

In contrast to the previous prices I reported, Chuck's Hop Shop in Seattle is pretty incredible. 42 taps with a really solid selection, including some Midnight Sun, and ridiculously good bottle prices ($5.60 for Hop Stoopid? Yes, please), and specials ($5 for a flight of 4 IPAs always plus events, which tonight was $5 for four radlers), and a pretty damned good food truck out front. Go there. Drink things.
