It's like 10000 years since the Emperor got put in the Golden Throne and you're telling me the Custodes, crafted by the Emperors own hand, designed to protect Him through the millennia all their bullshit fluff. forgot about a tunnel right up the rear end in a top hat of the Golden Throne and that 1 xenos and sixty mutants got through all of the defenses both in and outside of Holy Terra to get within spitting distance of Him?

Get hosed that poo poo was so loving stupid. I really enjoyed the book but the reveal and level of threat was disappointing and retarded.

The infiltrators were being helped from the inside. The xenos was there to fix the throne. Maybe. Probably.

I was really impressed with the take on Lorgar's faith and falling: For all of his professed faith in humanity and the Emperor, he doesn't actually have any faith that they'd defeat Chaos. It's all ritual and lip service.

Meanwhile the Emperor's plan of censoring the gods would have succeeded in disempowering them, but whoops.

I don't know if that gets explicitly spelled out in the third act, but I was surprised at the depth.

First Heretic is v good. Make sure to follow it up with Know No Fear and finally Betrayer for the full WB v Ultras trilogy. All the books build on each other, it's like poetry, it rhymes.

You can skip 'Know No Fear' pretty safely. It does have some good pacing and setpieces, but it devolves into mustache-twirling monologuing villains, lame battles scene and low-stakes bolter-porn. The buildup is aces, the delivery trips badly.

It definitely has some excessive bolter porny bits, but I think Betrayer suffers if you don't get the full scope of how badly the UMs were bloodied by the WBs at calth. Honestly, I totally dug it and thought it was a great portrayal of the UMs who normally run pretty bland.

Those all sound great! I'll do Aurelian next, and if Know No Fear gets boring I might skip to Betrayer.

Do we ever hear anything more about the Ultras absorbing troops from the redacted chapters? They hinted at it in the beginning of FH, and I'm wondering if that was related to the Landspeeder pilot who took pity on the Blessed Lady in the opening scenes.

For more on Lorgars development, pick up Lorgar: Bearer of the Word.

Probably the most boring of the primarch books.

Lorgar: He just wanted someone to worship.

Perturabo: He just wanted to build great buildings, be recognized for it, and make the Imperium great again.

Magnus: Somehow find a way to guide humans into a higher evolution of psychic being. Perhaps even transcend into beings of light/psychic energy.

Gathering Storm has covered most of the preamble to 8th Edition, and there have been a few books that cover the new material, such as Dark Imperium.

Long overblown story made extremely short: a new wave of invasions during the 13th Black Crusade finally cracks open the Cadian Gate and devastates the planet knocking out the Pylon system. Eye of Terror undergoes a massive expansion, linking up with the Maelstrom and slicing the Imperium in half in a gigantic warpstorm called the Cicatrix Maledictum.

A super group of Eldar and Imperial Heroes escape Cadia and arrive in Ultramar, where a lunatic techpriest called Belisarius Cawl brings Guilliman out of stasis. Robby G goes on a crusade to Terra to see his dad and stops a half dozen apocalypses along the way. After meeting with the Emperor's corpse, Guilliman declares the Indomitus Crusade to reclaim the northern half of the Imperium. Cawl offers up a present to Guilliman in the form of the Primaris Marines, a science project Guilliman and Cawl worked on during the Horus Heresy, which are basically super marines.

Indomitus Crusade lasts around 120 years and mostly manages to stabilize the new frontlines between the Imperium and chaos, who in typical fashion had the 13th Black Crusade run out of steam as warbands split off to do their own thing.

Current state of the Imperium is worse than it was at 11:59 to midnight, but not so bad that the whole thing will collapse in a few months. Unknown if it is still M41 or M42, given that the Imperium has no standardized calendar. So at furthest estimates, the setting is about a century or two into the 42nd Millennium, and poo poo is currently on fire.

-Eldar managed to wake up a fragment of their death god Ynnaed, breaking Biel-Tan and flooding Commoragh with daemons in the process. It and it's two champions are currently rolling around the webway gathering followers and prepping Ynnaed to take on Slaanesh, hopefully without wiping out the entire Eldar race.

-Magnus popped out of the warp, devastated Fenris and used to collective torment to yank his Daemon World out of the Warp into orbit around the ruins of Prospero.

-Mortarian is currently leading a massive crusade of his own to corrupt Ultramar and expand Nurgle's Garden into realspace.

-Baal got hosed up by Tyranids despite the Necrons dropping an ancient doomsday weapon on that arm of Leviathan. Blood Angels and their successors got their asses kicked, but some mysterious Chaos force intervened and weakened the 'Nids just in time for Imperial reinforcements to show.

-Tau are expanding after the second Damocles crusade failed. They lost an entire expansion attempt to a warp storm and it looks like Shadowsun is starting to pull a Farsight.

Pretty sure Girlyman's reinforcement fleet showed up just to swipe away the last pitiful stragglers after the BA's daemon nemesis swept in to murder all the Nids and then stack their skulls in neat piles on Baal's moon with the explicit purpose to show who did it. Basically just to gently caress with them.

I don't think it would have. To me, the overriding message of the Horus Heresy is that you can't eradicate spirituality. People are always going to seek out a higher power for worship as they have since the beginning of the human race. I think the only way to really weaken the Chaos Gods would have been for the Emperor to offer an alternative religion - if not the Imperial Cult, then perhaps something like Buddhism or Confucianism. Lorgar would have been great at that, locking down worlds against Chaos.

But mandatory atheism has never worked for a civilization. You can't stop people from wanting and needing to believe - yet another way the Emperor had utterly lost touch with humanity.

Pretty much. Spacecraft get lost crossing the Immaterium all the time, and some of them end up fused into huge agglomerations of ancient and not-so-ancient vessels because, well, it's the Warp and just about anything goes there.

Yeah, Space Hulks are an amalgamation of ships smashed together. Orks and Tyranids love them as means of transportation because of their unpredictable nature of jumping in and out of the warp.

Sometimes space hulks can be massive dark age of technology arc like ships as well.

But mostly they are a massive nightmarish agglomeration (intended or unintended) of ships with the occasional celestial body stuffed full of things that will eat your face through power armour and technological secrets.

WH40K Wiki posted:

Many Space Hulks are known to be breeding grounds for the Tyranid species known to the Imperium as the Genestealers, often being the product of a starship inflicted with a Genestealer infestation where the Genestealers took over and killed the crew. It is even suspected by the Adeptus Mechanicus' Magos that the Tyranid Hive Mind implants Genestealers to lay in stasis on Space Hulks to serve as unwitting living vanguards for a nearby Tyranid Hive Fleet intent on finding new worlds to consume. Congruent with the expansive bio-mass consumption of the Tyranids, these Genestealer-infested Space Hulks are doubly dangerous for the cargo they may contain and the Hive Fleets they could psychically call upon an inhabited planet.

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Space_Hulk

It basically sounds like Genestealers get onto a vessel, take over and kill the crew while it is in warp, and then it just floats around and combines with other warp debris into a Space Hulk while the Tyranids hang out in stasis waiting for the next face to grab. But it is odd that they are such a fixture of the Space Hulk concept, because Tyranids don't have any ability to enter the Warp independently. I'd assume that it basically comes down to writers wanting to reenact Aliens 2.

The second one.

Due to one scene, I almost want to nominate it for book of the year though. It's the one where Abaddon and his buddies find out the Imperium is worshiping the Emperor as a god. I lost it when Telemachon called out "Medic" and had to be helped off the floor because he's laughing so hard.

There's a kind of a (better) sequel to that scene when Moriana shows up again - same scene Shroud refers to.
I guess the bit with the Warp Ghosts Chapter was kinda neat, but like, it's hard to describe- the whole story felt like the pacing started and stopped really jarringly. Maybe it was intentional since a big aspect of the story is the way time flows in the warp?

It's not bad. It's just oddly paced and the whole selling point of "THE FIRST BLACK CRUSADE" is covered through about 5-6 paragraphs.

Also- is it just me, or is there some major scale creep when it comes to flagships in recent fluff? Apparently the Eternal Crusader is the Fist's original legion Flagship, on par with the Vengeful spirit. The Macragge's Honour also shows up in the Dark Imperium book. Whatever happened to all these monster vessels being destroyed or lost over the years?

Most of these ships didn't exist before the Horus Heresy novels. And you know what that means. Cool poo poo is not allowed to have one neat appearance and then be forgotten, unless your name is Zso Sahaal.

Of the various legion flagships, we know that the Shadow of the Emperor (Raven Guard) was destroyed at Istvaan, the Fidelitas Lex (Word Bearers) was destroyed at Nuceria, and the Nightfall (Night Lords) was destroyed in the Thramas Crusade. All the other legion flagships' fates are unknown or still around.

The various original legion flagships if anyone's interested in the names:

Dark Angels: Invincible Reason
Emperor's Children: Pride of the Emperor
Iron Warriors: Iron Blood
White Scars: Swordstorm
Space Wolves: Hrafnkel
Imperial Fists: Eternal Crusader (later, Phalanx)
Night Lords: Nightfall
Blood Angels: Red Tear
Iron Hands: Iron Fist
World Eaters: Conqueror
Ultramarines: Macragge's Honor
Death Guard: Endurance
Thousand Sons: Photep
Luna Wolves: Vengeful Spirit
Word Bearers: Fidelitas Lex (later, Trisagion)
Salamanders: Flamewrought
