Polar is a film that, on paper, probably sounded great. Even in the filming, it all would have seemed bold and interesting. The film's issues all come out in the final execution. The editing is janky as gently caress, and is just off pace the whole film. I got about halfway through, and every scene just felt off rhythm, every shot a little too long or short. I don't know how else to describe it.

What is it with all those Netflix movies that sound great on paper but end up being forgettable in the execution despite the obvious talent and money behind them?

Making a film is really loving hard. I might be wrong, but I think most of the disappointing Netflix projects have been by directors that aren't used to projects that big.

It's baffling how anyone, even someone new to movie making, could look at the opening scene of Polar and go 'yeah, this is how it should be'. No Mads, ugly colors, a bunch of Suicide Squad rejects who are inept as hell, bad CGI blood and general incoherence (down to the dumb title font) that make you think you selected another movie named Polar.

A lot of the shittier "Netflix Originals" aren't actually comissioned or funded at the production level by Netflix. They're picked up on the cheap because they can't get distribution rights elsewhere and in the past would have be Straight-to-Video.

I see that some Jackie Chan movies that I'm not very familiar with are on Prime right now. I know the answer is probably to watch every Jackie Chan movie, but are any of these particularly good compared to the others? The Young Master Hand of Death Heart of the Dragon The Prisoner

The Young Master is easily the best of that bunch. I'd say it's the best Jackie Chan film until his string with Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao.

I do love those 80s ones mentioned with his pals etc. Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever are great.MrBling posted:Am I being really dumb or is Undisputed: Fight for Freedom just a renamed/re-released Boyka: Undisputed ? Yep that's the same movie. Here's a question, any good French and Indian action movies to recommend? I ask since those are two countries that have a ton of movies, and I haven't watched many action films from them. Alluda Mazaaka is one good Indian (Tollywood) one I like, outrageous craziness. But not in a way that looks kind of boring like that CGI Matrix guy one, something about a 90s movie like that just feels less slick and safe, it's like Commando meets a Stephen Chow movie or something. It's the movie with that horse sliding under a car, fun flick. For France, I have not seen much action from there outside of Luc Besson and Pierre Morel's movies.

Would Killing Zoe count as a French film? It's mostly in English and stars Eric Stoltz, but takes place in Paris and many of the characters speak French when not conversing with Stoltz's character. I remember liking Banlieue 13 back when it first came out too, but I never saw the sequel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNCbbnYZe0E

Since we're discussing Italian films, there was one I saw advertised on Youtube a few years back, and it seemed to involve...angels or something, on earth. It was cartoonishly and horrifically violent, and that seemed to be the thrust of the advertising, showing people getting their heads punched off and so on. Anyone have any idea what film I might be referring to? I know that's impossibly vague and i apologise. Now that I think about it, I'm not even 100% sure it's Italian.

I can at least tell you 100% that you're thinking of something by Necrostorm, and from that description it sounds like Adam Chaplin in particular. Not everything they make is a hit, but I loving love them regardless, because there's very few indie studios with the kind of sheer chutzpah they have.

District/Banlieue 13 was great, the sequel and the American remake were not so hot Some french cop flicks with less action are pretty good- Chrysalis, both Crimson Rivers movies, uhhh... Wasabi is fun? My favorite far and away is Brotherhood of the Wolf, tho Edit: and this is where I recommend the Musketeer with Tim Roth and Yuen woo-Ping choreography
