the point is that yes, getting gas equals additional risk, so does getting coffee, grocery shopping, going through the drive through, all the stuff that people are still convincing themselves it's just dandy to do

Nah. We don't need to quarantine everyone, we just need to quarantine everyone who is contagious. Right now there is no way to tell who is contagious, and lots of people are, so everybody. But it's not actually impossible to tell who is sick/contagious.

Testing - ramp up testing capacity. Waaaay up. Everyone who is feeling unwell should be able to get a free test, even if they don't have all the symptoms or whatever.

Contact Tracing - Everybody who tests positive gets comprehensive contact tracing, and all their contacts get tested.

More testing - Get that antibody test to everyone who wants one. Or just everyone. Information is good. There are a lot of idiots who had a bad cold in february who have nearly convinced themselves that they are probably immune already. Plus "how much of the population has been infected" is just good public health information. If 80% of the population has antibodies, that's a different situation than if 3% has them. And it could help clarify the worrying issue of "cured" people getting sick again.

Quarantine - Theoretically the infected are already under quarantine, but in a perfect world it would be great if we could do better at this. Some people break quarantine frequently despite testing positive because they just have stuff to do (and are assholes). Some people are quarantined in a home with family or roommates, and probably spreading it. It would be great if we could eminent domain some vacant hotels or something. Everybody who is positive but not sick enough for the hospital gets to spend 2-3 weeks with hotel wifi and cable TV.

Social distancing, sanitation, PPE -- these all stay on. Any business that wants to stay open needs easily available hand washing or sanitizer to all employees all day long. They need to provide cleaning supplies so high-touch surfaces can be cleaned several times a day. They need to provide and/or require all staff, customers and visitors to use appropriate PPE -- at least masks in most cases.

Masks for All - Everybody in public wears a cloth mask or better at all times. This will help prevent asymptomatic folks who weren't caught by contact tracing from spreading their vile essence.

With all that we could probably get away with just keeping the highest risk non-essential businesses closed. Anything that requires crowds to function stays closed: Stadiums, clubs, concert halls, movie theaters, convention centers, studios, gyms. Ideally this would include churches, but America. Dine in restaurants, pubs, and other places where it isn't feasible for customers to wear masks either stay closed or have their capacity reduced to the point where every customer seat is at least 6 feet from every other seat, but that would probably be unprofitable so most would just stay closed.

You use the really excessive testing to keep a firm grip on the number of cases in your area. Number goes too high, everybody goes back into lockdown. But as long as number is low enough that your covid ward is nearly empty and your easily able to provide supervised quarantine and contact tracing for all the infected, there is little benefit in keeping healthy mechanics and drywall guys at home sitting on their thumbs or logging in to reddit.

Re: antibody testing

I’ve heard that right now the problem with these is that there’s a ton of false positives because the tests aren’t precise enough to differentiate between Covid19 and a whole bunch of other coronaviruses, meaning that you might get positive result if you just had a cold recently or something.

they all seem pretty risky to me and while i still do them i do them much less frequently. well grocery shopping anyway, i havent gone out just for a coffee since this started

i feel like im in a middle ground as far as risk mitigation. i generally only go out every other day or so for walk with my wife, we both wear masks and stay away from others. we go grocery shopping about once every two weeks. filled up the tank when this started and havent gotten gas since tho not out of any particular fear just havent needed it yet - like i said i consider gas stations the same risk as grocery shopping. doest seem so extreme to me i think most people in my neighborhood are at about this level

My wife brought some medical wipes home from her last job. They smell strong at first and you're supposed to use them gloved, but kill hivvy and all kinds of things. We wipe all her stuff down when she comes through the door with one. Speaking of her job, it's been a weird transition for her as she has been thrown into procedures that she'd normally still be observing and they had her participating in procedures within the first week. Luckily, her area of the hospital is somewhat isolated and the patients they get are tested for coronavirus prior to surgery and rescheduled if they have it.

I bought a couple boxes of vinyl gloves like 6 months ago because my roommate likes to wear them when cleaning. I always carry 3 gloves in my car so I can be prepared to buy gas or handle something.

My work gave me access to a box of nitrile gloves for work, I just put them in my pocket for later

I haven’t eaten out since early March, have gotten gas once (gloved, and wiped the buttons and handle down with virucidal wipe prior to doing anything), and I pick groceries up. They get loaded in, and when I get home all packaged food is wiped down with virucidal wipes.

I would love a gyro or a Taco Bell chili-cheese burrito about now, but I'm not risking my or my family's health to get one. We've had multiple restaurants shut down recently because they had workers test positive....after serving hundreds/thousands of people. I've already mentioned it before, but food trucks keep showing up to our 850-house neighborhood and sell out every time. We've been on our nightly walk a couple times while it's going on and sure enough, 80% of them are all just standing around no masks and grouped together talking.

The majority of people just don't take it seriously at all. My last trip to Walmart I had to go in because they've pulled toilet paper off the grocery app. I go in with mask and gloves, grab a 24-pack and head out. I could have counted the number of people with any PPE on one hand.

Be careful for what you wish for.

There is a huge issue here in Quebec in old folks home where there found a few places with cadavers and people caked with crass. It so bad that they sending doctors to do the jobs of nurses. Aside of that everything is going as plan but man this is grim.

quick edit: Also they test people postmortem for the covid compared to a lot of places in the world.

We had a local nursing home that made up our entire county's death toll until a few days ago. First, they reported 11 and within a few days they increased the count to 20 after testing them post mortem. Also, I've seen lots of stories about nurses who have straight up stopped showing up for their shifts at nursing homes.
