I know of at least two smaller local festivals where one of his bands were scheduled to play on the last day (Entombed AD and Firespawn, respectively), and LG just showed up early on the first day, no plan on where to sleep or anything, he was just there to drink beer and have fun.

On the third day of a festival bender, a vocalist soundcheck turns into "lalalaLALALA thbrrrrbpt DONE!".

I've been listening to Left Hand Path so much over the past few months. This sucks.

Mikael had some beautiful words for LG.

quote:

”This morning I got the news that LG Petrov had passed away. Now, I only seem to post something when someone I or we collectively admire has passed away, and for this I’m sorry. Usually I feel the need to write something when a musician that’s been part of my music-life has passed away. This time it's different however. LG was "our guy”. A Stockholm original. I should rephrase and say he ”is” our guy, really. That will never change, even if he’s physically not here anymore. He epitomized the term ”down to earth”. No frills. He was just a downright lovely person. Brimming with positivity. A friend. Someone we knew, and he knew us. Every time I ran into him we always talked and laughed about something. He’d bum a cigarette (back when I was a smoker) and we’d have a beer, chatting away. Hearing about his illness came as a shock, but somewhere in your mind it’s not ”real” until it becomes real. It’s impossible to prepare for something like this anyways, so why bother?

Musically he was a giant in the world of singers. I like to think I’ve told him too, but LG being LG, he would have laughed it off. My favorite performance of his was when Entombed played at the Royal Opera here in Stockholm. It was amazing! LG at the piano! They put a lot of attending musicians to shame that evening, and I was one of them. We will have to let this sink in. It’s not as easy as having a ”Entombed-evening” on the stereo and expect to feel better. Soon enough though, I hope. We wish to extend our sincere condolences and respect to his family and friends, as well as to all members of Morbid, Nihilist and Entombed, past or present. Many of which are friends of ours.

drat it! It’s even difficult to stop writing as that kind of seals everything. But there you go. Lars Göran Petrov, rest in peace.” - Mikael on behalf of Opeth

I haven't gotten a chance to smell them but I am getting the Vessels one. You can read the goofy descriptions if that helps.

Vessels:

quote:

"Another slow night in the endless amber haze...distant wires of smoke and faint motion, phosphorescence, or, could it be...?...tongues fin and split the still, blackstrap, salt, maybe - is it vetiver? - if i could just...place...."

Deep moss & wood, muddled herbs, a curious decoction, soft & dark.

Mirror:

quote:

"Light, and wake ashore. Wreckage burning in ash-stained pits of ice, piercing wind and the gentle pulse of the moss-green sea. Grasped in nature’s closing hand. All mirrors reflect the self."

Verdant forest, faint embers, amber, herbaceous & light.

You should absolutely come visit, it's a great place. Come on a hot summer night and the place will be absolutely packed.

One of my best concert memories was when Stormtroopers of Beer (SoD reunion with most of the members) played for free out in front in the parking lot of the old meatpacking district, like an old-school illegal street concert. Tomas from At the Gates was there and joined in for a few songs, as did the guy from Mikkeller who set the whole thing up with Danny Lilker.

The crowd was proper old-school raucous and blind pissing drunk, just a completely unhinged mosh in front, kicking over mic stands and stage monitors. And the band was loving it, having one hell of party, having the drunkest members of the crowd singing whole songs, it was hilarious.
