Kaku and Stussy were there too and they're way cooler

I always wonder if Oda's been big into Stüssy brand gear since he was drawing the S on his desk in the 90's.

lucci is just going to spend the entire series mysteriously pontificating on boats headed to various locations and then turning around because itll be over by the time they get there

its funny that don krieg and kuro are literally the only main villains in the entire series to never become relevant again in any way. i guess hody is also down and out but hes also sent offscreen with the implication that hell die soon.

Foxy doesn’t get a story but he was featured in the “Where Are They Now” cover arc that was the first year or so of the timeskip, which I guess makes him more relevant than Kuro/Krieg even if he was still just doing his thing on Party House Island.

Yeah, in English the word marine generally means naval infantry- the guys who jump off boats to fight on land specifically, rather than the people who stay on the boats. It's a distinction the English came up with so I wouldn't say it's solely American. It couldn't really be directly translated back into other languages like some military terms because most other European languages already call their navies some variation of "marine," so it's a pretty much English-only distinction. (Though notably the Japanese do have separate words for naval infantry and boat soldiers, so it's still a relevant distinction in translating One Piece.)

In One Piece the Marines are not amphibious specialists so it's a bit weird to call them Marines, but it's not like anyone's going to be confused and honestly on the balance it's probably more straightforward to call them the Marines since they plaster that word in 20 foot letters all over all their stuff.

But there's also nothing wrong, and a lot pedantically right, about calling them the Navy.

Maybe modern marines are amphibious specialists, but British warships during the age of sail would keep companies of marines for shooting ship to ship or boarding actions and also to be basically military police for the crew. In that light, I don't think it's unreasonable to call OP marines marines: they're soldiers fighting on or around boats.

Arlong is entirely in flashbacks, right?

I guess if he wasn't in Impel Down he's probably been enslaved on Mary Geoise somewhere.

I always assumed Kuro was killed by his crew while he was unconscious. He’d just tried to kill them, after all!

Krieg was probably captured at some point. He’d lost his armor, his strongest subordinate, and all but one of his ships.

I assume Arlong is in a prison in East Blue; I don’t think he was considered important enough for Impel Down.

Buggy did go to Impel Down with a lower bounty than Arlong’s, but he was already in Paradise when he was captured, and it was specifically stated that the other prisoners on his level all had higher bounties than him; I don’t think they bother transferring prisoners from the Blues to Impel Down unless they’re very important.

arlong and his crew were sun pirates remnants, i imagine the world government would have had way more interest in them if they fully knew what they were about. if mr. 3 could make impel down, arlong definitely could.

I figured they were both just so pathetically small time that they're still kicking around East Blue, thinking they're badasses. Everyone else had actual dreams, but they were just total loving chumps.

The heat is too hot in East Blue, I'm going to successfully fake my death and then scheme my way into being the richest man on a 3rd rate island in a 5th rate sea. Just the most complex plan, that starts with the hardest thing as step one, for the most pointless and nothing stakes.

Granted, Kreig had somewhat of an actual dream. However his plan was to trick his way into being a badass on the Grand Line via a strongish East Blue fleet. When that failed he was going to take over the Grand Line with a single fake floating restaurant. Dude's lucky as poo poo he ran into Mihawk somehow before he ran into Baroque Works or someone else slightly more powerful than Pirate Captain Usopp.

arlong and buggy did have actual grand line experience that wasnt 'immediately getting 360 noscoped by mihawk' so that explains a lot of the contrast

in the wake of the whole howard hamlin yelling the one piece is real overlaid on the picture of whitebeard with his giant cock out meme, its reminded me that whitebeard just before that basically calls his shot on how the series is going to go down. blackbeard simply isnt the guy thats going to find it because he doesnt have the inherited will, someone is going to "shoulder centuries of history" and theres going to be a great war once its found.

edit gently caress i just remembered its a break week too isnt it

krieg is too mundane. he encountered a pretty straightforward threat (mihawk) and refused to believe it was real. the cardinal rule of the grand line is that poo poo gets weird, and krieg couldn't handle it. even if he took a few decades off to lift weights and grow, tree-like, until he was 20 feet tall (you know, as one does in OP) he'd still be hopelessly small minded.
