stardust crusaders is very monster-of-the-week for a while but the ending stretch really picks things up and leads into parts 4 and onwards which are the fully fleshed-out stand parts and not the experimental transition that part 3 (stardust crusaders) is

Part 3 is very Monster of the Week, but it's oddly charming in how it's presented. It's weird, because Part 5 does the same thing but arguably better and with better characterization and I still find myself more enamored with Part 3.

This release contains possibly the worst grouping of Stand battles in the series. This is right where I got fatigue and now I'm remembering why I liked 5 more than 6; there's just a huge drop in fun of Stand battles in this section. Two auto Stands that work against the user in a way, invisible zombies, eh. On the flip side, this us where we were getting best ever Stand fight, train fight, in 5.

Animation isn't helping much either. The flip side is that the animation and lack of bad translation helps the character stuff and Joleyne so much that it's now better than 5 just because of what is happening around the Stand battles. I read both back with bad translations but 6 contains such better character work that I'm finally preferring it over 5.

The main cast is better (the part 5 people become way too serious and abrasive in some situations), there is more levity in general, and Jotaro is the Man With No Name.

Horror references mean occasional (thankfully very rare) rapey scenes. There's one more episode that, depending on your opinions, might be more uncomfortable, but then it's a fairly smooth ride all the way to, like, Part 7 where it's much better written. (I guess Part 5 has a scene very reminiscent of sexual violence, but is not that)

I never was particularly bothered by the Ape because Araki can't write or draw teens. He's like an inverse of "little girl is a 1000 year old" trope, where you meet a completely adult character and they hit you with "I'm 15". I honestly think ages of some of the characters were only there because it's a shonen, so they're supposed to be teens.

Frankly, the Ape episode is what drew me into Part 3, because before it Stand battles were very "I punch harder" things, and aside from the fly, which was relatively boring, we haven't really seen how far the concept can stretch. Having a user who's an animal and a stand that's just a ship really opened up the possibilities and got me interested in the part. It helps that after that things go back to 4D chess and we forget about Star Finger poo poo (even if it's not the last time it appears)

They do give it a third use in the anime. It's fairly minor, but a welcome surprise

Yeah, the maximum security wing is just a terrible slump for me and the anime didn't make it much better. Dragon's Dream is still garbage, but the visuals of Planet Waves at least make it interesting.

But here on out is generally all high quality joje, so that's nice.
