There's been a couple more chapters of Miss Kiryu Doesn't Know What Love Is.

Props for the author making the so-called "trap" character in the manga-within-the-manga into an actual trans girl, and the main character standing up for her proper representation in the anime.

Kiryu is very relatable.

I got curious so I looked it up and Miss Kiryu Doesn't Know What Love Is already ended in Japan. Ending spoilers: it basically ends the way it is now—she's still single and doesn't have any romantic interest in either of them.

That's cool.

i hated her soap opera cuckporn comic so much the first time i read it i didn't sleep that night (well, i also had indigestion) but it's the only portrayal i've seen... anywhere? of a person with no sex drive cuz of energy problems trying to make a relationship work with someone horny so uhhhh maybe it's actually super woke?

Shame about the rest of the comic but that relationship alone left me fairly satisfied with the story. It probably wasn't exactly the intent but I felt it was pretty easy to read that character as asexual, and it's the only time i've seen an asexual character in any sort of vaguely adult romantic stories (for largely understandable reasons, and not that i've really been looking). It was weirdly relatable despite how kinda ridiculously dramatic the story was, and that's not a super common experience for me, so that was rad.

I mean a couple of chapters back she had that whole conversation which boiled down to "You better not date Mogumo because that would be Gay and that would be bad for him". Compared to every other character in the comic she is not open-minded at all.

Does the characters discussing how the previous chapter was real creepy and unnecessary really change much about the fact the previous chapter was creepy and unnecessary?

SyntheticPolygon
Dec 20, 2013

I think it's pretty ok. There's always drama but the type of drama changes so it doesn't feel like it's treading water at least.

SyntheticPolygon

It's just a weird title for the series and it kinda suggests a tone that's not really present for the manga.

SyntheticPolygon
Dec 20, 2013

I only read a few chapters of that one but after a bit it seemed to change from both characters being equally blunt about their feelings to the guy being even more blunt and his girlfriend getting embarrassed and shy from him being so blunt. And at that point it was like the one vaguely subversive thing about the comic became just a generic premise.

An office lady is very confused about why she just can't find a guy she likes no matter how many dates she goes on, and why her cool female coworker makes her heart flutter. Can you, the reader, solve this mystery?

I know it's not really the intent but a lot of this is intensely relatable to the whole asexual experience.

I'm liking it a lot.

I've noticed that's somewhat common in these lesbian awakening stories.

Although personally I find the moral that "you should feel lonely" to be a little offputting. Well, arguably it's just something she's internalized and part of why she hates herself, but if she actually does find love with this other girl then the story will never actually get around to rejecting it. Then the moral would just become "you should feel lonely, but you need to search for love in the right places."

There's not many works out there that really explore being asexual but any sort of story that involves characters thinking about their sexuality or feelings in regards to romantic relationships will usually be relatable to me.

Also, i'm not sure that's the message i'm getting? Like you said, it seems really clear to me it's all internalised from how society presents the importance of a specific sort of relationship and how it's reinforced innocuously through co-workers and just everyday life. Even though the story's about her crushing on someone I don't know how that can really be addressed without also discussing how she shouldn't hate on herself for being uncomfortable when co-workers talk about meeting guys or how she's a total catch and stuff. Like that's all pretty familiar to me.

SyntheticPolygon
Dec 20, 2013

Yeah I getcha.

I don't really expect the comic to go over how it's totally cool to not find love at all and it's just society being a bitch but it's a romance story and alas although I like romance it's not a genre which will ever give a moral super relevant to me being asexual (for understandable reasons I suppose). But while that's the case the scenes of Uno just at work feeling pretty uncomfortable talking with colleagues about dating others or about how she's a total catch and everything were good and cool and the sort of idea i enjoy being explored.

'Fetishisation' is a very vague thing for the author to have come under attack for though. I guess I don't really know much about them besides their latest work and from a quick look some touhou doujins I probably read years ago, but they seem ok.

It's already changed a lot from the one-shot (as you might expect considering its now 15 chapters in) so I don't think it'll be following the same structure. Though, the one-shot was really good so even if it does go down that route I think it would be done well.

SyntheticPolygon

I mean, like I said the one-shot was good so I don’t think it’ll be an issue even if it does go down that route.

Ever since it got serialised I’ve seen so many things about people being worried it will end like the one-shot. But the one-shot finishes on a pretty positive note so I don’t really get the fear.

While Hamuro's boring and that being the pairing the author went with is lame, I think the thing that stands out to me about the ending is that they're really trying to sell their relationship with their teacher as very significant even though he kinda just disappears a 3rd of the way into the story. I think he was a good character in those early chapters and it'd have been cool if he was more important but it just doesn't land for me and I feel its missing the notes its aiming for. Which is kinda my feeling about the last 3-4 chapters of the comic in general.

Everything's been framed as very significant and emotional but none of it hit home like it was supposed to.

They had a character that was Ace and their sexuality mattered to the story which i've seen exist in like 4 other things ever so the author is probably ok imo. But they sure didn't actually know what to do with the more interesting elements of the story after a point. Maybe they just only had the first half really well planned out or whatever but it didn't come together at all.
