NYPD does not give a gently caress about bike lane violations or even really traffic enforcement in general. They're some of the worst offenders in terms of obstructing bike lanes. My wife recently got doored by a car parked in the bike lane, someone called the cops and when they showed up they were just like well what do you want us to do about it .
When I got doored by a truck parked in the bike lane, the "Toronto" cops wondered if the green paint meant they were allowed to park there  (absolutely not, to be clear)

The driver did get a fine, and my non-dominant index finger is permanently hosed three surgeries and four years later.

For the record, I hate cars and the context of my whine was mostly that the bike infrastructure is so terrible. In the case of the cyclist that almost killed himself, he dropped off the curb of what passes for a separated bike lane in Toronto (Sherbourne for locals) to pass someone without looking, directly into the path of a bus that had to swerve to avoid splattering him.

I'm also pissed that the office my company just moved into (Sugar Beach) has ruined the old lake shore MUP by essentially forcing pedestrians onto it. The new buildings basically use the MUP as a sidewalk when there used to be distinct routes for pedestrians and cyclists. Never mind the loving billion dollar expressway rehab/realignment has destroyed the MUP connection to the east for minimum three more years assuming no delays.:lol::lol:

This new office should have been a beautiful glorious bike ride, but somehow everything has gotten far worse in the last few years.

When I was trying to buy a house in Toronto, I saw a lot of these as a second bathroom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_toilet

I'm pretty sure ours were mostly for sewage reasons though. That said, my girlfriend's house has one and it totally has a separate entryway just for it.

The hellscape I get to cross almost daily now after my office moved: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.6455473,-79.3698014,3a,75y,332.92h,89.55t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1shnCOIEfkOoOj3wsgRVIyUA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

6 lane "boulevard" generally used by drivers who think the expressway directly above isn't moving fast enough. And of course the MUP I used to ride regularly has been torn up for minimum 3 more years as the city spends $1 billion+ rehabilitating/"reconfiguring" aforementioned expressway.

Just pissed today because drivers decided to just not let pedestrians cross and continued making right hand turns. I think it's literally the worst car-centric part of "old Toronto", but it's a whole other hellscape connecting to suburbia.

Google Maps keeps insisting a long flight of stairs down the side of the valley is a legit bike path whenever I check directions. To reach it even you have to cross a grass park with no paths.

...and weirdly enough it probably is still the fastest/safest way for me to reach the valley paths and avoid roads.

Paywall I don't have access to:

https://www.economist.com/united-states/2023/04/20/rural-americans-are-importing-tiny-japanese-pickup-trucks

quote:

Acouple of years ago Jake Morgan, a farmer who lives just outside Raleigh, in North Carolina, realised he needed a new vehicle to get around his property. At first he was looking at “side-by-sides”—a sort of off-road utility vehicle. But watching a review on YouTube of one that costs around $30,000 made by John Deere, he saw a comment that said something like “Why don’t you just get a minitruck instead?” That is, a tiny four-wheel drive pickup truck, sometimes known as a “Kei” truck, mostly made in Japan to take advantage of laws there which tax smaller vehicles less.

Intrigued, Mr Morgan started researching. Within a few months, he drove to Newport, Virginia to pick up a 1997 Honda Acty, having spent a total of just $2,000 on importing it. He was delighted. Not only was it “dirt cheap”, but the Acty is less than five feet wide, and so can get into tight spaces a normal pickup cannot, like Mr Morgan’s barn. And unlike a side-by-side, it can also be driven legally on local roads. “They’re amazingly useful,” he says. Not long after importing his first, he sold it and bought another. The new one is even better—it has air-conditioning and a button which activates a dumper.

...
(preview ends there)

But people have been saying all along people that actually need utility vehicles have less use for over-sized pickups with high, difficult-to-load beds.

https://www.thebeaverton.com/2023/05/f150-drivers-pleased-to-learn-electric-version-even-deadlier-to-pedestrians/

quote:

F150 drivers pleased to learn electric version even deadlier to pedestrians

CALGARY – Ford F150 pickup drivers across Canada were pleased and relieved to learn that the electric version of the vehicle is even better at annihilating unsuspecting pedestrians than the traditional gas-powered model.

For years the pickup driver community has been concerned that electric models will be less of a danger to small children, the elderly, and basically anyone who flouts the natural order of the world by walking where only massive hunks of self-propelled metal should roam.

Fortunately, specifications show that the new pickups are just as huge as the old ones and will also prevent drivers from seeing anyone over the hood who is less than eight feet tall. Plus, the electric versions have the advantages of faster acceleration, being heavier due to the weight of the batteries, and – best of all – are much less noisy so pedestrians aren’t as likely to hear them coming.

“Look, there’s only one thing I hate more than hearing about the fake climate catastrophe caused by fossil fuels,” said F150 driver Gary Russell, pausing to cough up ashes from local forest fires, “and that’s people who walk on sidewalks in that hostile, anti-truck way that they do. So, yeah, I’m willing to buy a quiet electric version so I can sneak up on those bastards!”

Pedestrian crush-tests performed by the manufacturers showed the electric models had a higher kill vs disable ratio, and were just as effective in side-swiping pedestrians when taking a corner too fast in a crowded city.

Some drivers have taken a different view by questioning whether pedestrian deaths even happen in the first place.

“Pedestrians are another hoax invented by car-hating liberals!” asserted Floyd Minster from Lethbridge. “I’ve been driving F150s for 15 years and I haven’t seen a single pedestrian. I might hear an occasional scream and a thud, but for sure I never see anyone.”

“The only people I see when I drive are workers in second-storey offices.”

At press time, Tesla has confirmed that their new electric truck’s self-drive function will automate the pedestrian killing process.
