I recall it happened to Scott Adams once back in the 90s, the color version had it look at though the one Black guy was the idiot and the butt of the joke.

(The actual reason I still remember that is because his response was an apology and a promise to add more positive diversity rather than a 20,000 word rant about how Black people should not even look at his comic. Guy's brain really melted.)

The comic had a security guard that was stealing poo poo at night. The colorist decided to make the one off thief character black. It was still Scott Adam's fault for being lazy and hiring a colorist instead of doing his own work unlike most cartoonist, and not even checking what the guy was doing before signing off. Given what we now know about the guy, I would not at all put it past him to hire a racist friend.

If Stiglich can't extrapolate from "Iowa is overrepresented by white Christians" to "compared to the rest of the country, which means it may be bad if you're using Iowa to figure out what the rest of the country wants or needs, or good if you're marketing to white Christians and planning to market there" (which is true for any case, a primary, a poll, a candidate for a position, a singer) then he's stupider than I thought.

Of course he's petty and spiteful as well as stupid so he also just doesn't like the person saying it.

In Stiglich's case that doesn't matter because he thinks white Christians are the only people who matter. It's their job to decide and everyone else's job to obey. To whatever degree they are overrepresented and their tastes disproportionately sampled is the system working as it should.

80-90% of political cartoons are just lazy, even when they're done by people with actual artistic skill, like Bennett.

A lot of these people are just pumping out a new cartoon every week or however often, and I also would definitely struggle to come up with something interesting to say every single time. There are only a few cartoonists who are consistently good, like Ruben Bolling, but much of his stuff isn't strictly political, which I think is part of the reason.

Collins is the same. A good 1/3 to 1/2 of his output is just commentary on some slice of life or cultural thing rather than anything political.

After he quit, I remember Tim Kreider talking about how bad trying to make meaningful cartoons was for his mental health as it meant deliberately and frequently tapping into anger or despair. If you are doing that regularly to meet a recurring deadline, it's going to impact you.

My favorite from that time period was the guy who argued the border could be easy and cheaply secured by gathering up all the discarded tires in the country and piling them up along the border, several miles deep, 2000 miles long, dozens of feet high. Then just light the whole thing and create the worlds largest tire fire.

The link between dragons, dwarves, and gold lust goes back to Fafnir in Norse mythology. Of course, dwarves in mythology were earth spirits, not a people. Tolkien decided to make dwarves an deliverate analog to Jewish people at some point during the writing (exiles from their homeland, a population dominated by craftsmen). It's possible he combined these two separate inspirations without considering what they looked like together, but I can't believe it wouldn't occur to him given how prominent antijewish propaganda was at the time.
