I'd be looking real close at what you're storing. Even at $49/month it adds up fast and after a while it's likely cheaper to buy replacements than to store whatever it is you're storing, especially if whatever it is still has some value and can be sold off on Craigslist or whatever rather than stored.

It's a lot of sentimental stuff that just won't fit in our current apartment (1 bedroom with not much storage, though a huge bedroom for a 1 bedroom apartment), along with some furniture that's waiting for us to move into a larger apartment once our lease is up. And some tools that I just never got moved to the new place. The furniture is from family, and it's old, solid stuff that I'd like to hang on to. It's not worth much, money wise, unless you find the right person, and some of it was hand built from scratch by my great grandfather.

The $49/mo was very doable. But since I'm out of work for the next month (between intensive outpatient rehab and multiple AA meetings a day - still collecting 2/3 pay), and my insurance company ain't doing gently caress all about Brokeback yet, I at least have a way and some time to get everything out.

To give you an idea of how little storage space we have at the apartment:

Except the W/D closet (stackable with a coat closet next to it in that picture) is a full size laundry room that holds a full size w/d... with about 1/3 of the room blocked off by the washer and dryer (they sit in the door opening) with that 1/3 of the room off to the side. :argh: (partly taken up by the water heater anyway) To actually get to that section of the laundry room or to the water heater, you have to yank the washer out. I climb on top of the washer to get to the shelving back there (apparently there's only 2 apartments in the complex with the full size w/d hookups in this floorplan - mine and my next door neighbor's).

Some of the stuff will have to wind up in the garage, even though I absolutely HATE storing anything in the garage that isn't car or bike related.

Miata = Coil pack died

So we have a partially functioning Forrester and a Rx-7. Well and I guess a 240z with a sticking throttle and bad tires.
This is going to be a fun. Ugh.

I rented a storage unit, moved all my stuff there, took a long hard look, and came to the realisation that a third could be thrown away (or would become redundant, like shelving), a third could be sold and the rest was essentially worthless and could very much be reacquired (if ever needed) for only a couple of months' rent.

Storage in urban areas is stupid expensive and much of the crap we hold on to isn't really needed.

We had a unit for 3 months during the move last year and couldn't have moved without it. So they do serve a purpose but long term you're throwing money away.

Welcome and thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart!
I love you!
I split a 10x20 with my roommates at my last rental, but that's because the three of us had 5 cars and 3 motorcycles, plus all sorts of tools and car parts. With a 22x22 garage, we needed the extra space just to store the bikes in the winter. But our rent was ridiculously cheap for a 3br/2ba townhome with garage, so the extra storage within walking distance was worth it.

Now all my stuff from the storage unit fits in my garage. We did rent 10x30 worth or climate controlled storage when we sold and bought, but only because we had 4 months of time between the sale and the closing on the new place. That was ridiculously expensive (about $300/mo) but worth it for the short term.

Mine's 10x10, climate controlled, though like much of Austin, they lost power for 4 days during the winter freeze (luckily I didn't have anything in there that could be damaged by cold, and none of the fire sprinklers or pipes popped). Started out at $31/month last year, which is just insanely cheap.

Going to look into how much a storage unit at my apartment costs. It wouldn't be climate controlled, and they only put a knob lock on it (so easy to break into, just like my garage), but adding a wireless sensor for my alarm would be a whopping :10bux::10bux: if I got one within range (433 MHz I think, so it'll get some distance, and I can set it to just do a 24/7 alert w/out siren easily enough). It'd be in one of the garage foyers - hopefully I can get one in the one that's attached to my garage.

You need a barndominium out there in Austin. I think that would be the optimum AI goon dwelling. Basically get a prefab steel building and then build a house within it. So your house is protected by an exterior steel shell and you get good amount of storage space/sq ft for the dollar. I really wish the metal recycling biz near me would open back up so I can start trying to take some random poo poo from here to get recycled and clean up some clutter.

In other news I have a non car person friend who has continued to make excellent car purchasing decisions. First car was a champagne colored Toyota Corolla he kept for forever. Second car was a early 2000's 4 cylinder Camry he kept to 250,000 miles and this weekend he traded up to a 2020 Honda Fit with 6,000 miles on it.

We move several PB a month  I don't recall off-hand how much cloud storage we have (a lot, but not like, video hosting a lot) but the most expensive S3 bucket wasn't the one with the most storage, it was the one that we made a fuckton of requests to and S3 charges per request.

My most expensive storage right now is cloud based database/BI - everything else is pennies compared to that. On prem still is the sweet spot for latency with my apps. I think I have ~10PB on prem and god knows how much in AZ. I don't pay that bill.

Even NetApp on prem is cheaper and that poo poo isnt cheap at all. That said we're shovelling in some 60 bay Supermicro SANs and I dont even want to think about how much all that disk would cost in the cloud. We're def doing petabytes a month...?

Just finished doing a disk swapout on a SAN from 2TB drives to 16TB. Took a month or two because -> remove disk --> Put in newdisk --> let ZFS resilver --> Waaaaaaaaaaait a day or two -> next disk for a 96 bay system and then realise that is one system with over a petabye and the rack is full of those and exactly how many racks is in the DC again??

Jealous of that. My personal is 12 bays, a mix of 2TB to 6TB each drive slowing migrating them all up. Looking to snag another Storageworks when I can and populate with the older drives for mucking around. Everything spare/superceded ends up as offline backups.

(anyone with some surplus D2600s let me know)

As awesome as that looks, land here has gotten stupid expensive. A single wide mobile home in rough exterior shape/pretty decent interior just sold for $200k up the road from me, though it had a (large) carport, a shed, and was on a 1/2 acre. Would have been perfect for one of those, though! I'm sure whoever bought it is knocking it all down.

It was in the oldest part/least desirable part of the suburb I'm in (predates the incorporation of the city), and was only on the market for a few days. There's 1/4 acre and less lots for sale in better neighborhoods for $200-300k, cheapest home in my town on Zillow right now is $300k and went on the market 3 days ago. I wouldn't be surprised if it's already sold for way over asking (~1500 sq ft 3/2)

Mustache Ride posted:

And one of those is in a HOA, the other already subdivided into 8 lots, so probably also in a HOA. :v: I'm just outside of Austin proper (CP), we're lagging SLIGHTLY behind Austin a little in pricing, but not by much. Leander is getting ridiculous too, but I don't think they're land locked like Austin and CP (... might be wrong on that).
