I don't see how people talking about something that is currently being actively developed is the same as them declaring it is the only way to play Doom.

Serious question, I thought I remembered people being vaguely positive towards it back in the days when this was the 2.5D FPS megathread. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in this thread who means "Doom" by Doom and not Deus Vult or Scythe or some other megawad that is meant to be played on UV and would destroy me instantly if I played it.

I decided to give the latest Beautiful Doom a shot after the talk in this thread, and I actually like a lot more than Brutal Doom. Gives a lot of the same improved 'feel', but doesn't do a lot of mucking around with the game balance. My only real problem is that there gets to be some really serious lag leaving Advanced Bleeding on, when you kill really big rooms of enemies (or explode a whole lot of them). I wonder if there isn't some way to limit the amount of blood sprites that can stick around to fix this?

The worst is E1M3, where you have to go into a lovely underground place that's twice as big as the area you were in before (the actual E1M3 remake) and go on a horrible key and switch hunt (complete with semi-hidden doors!) for no good reason that takes at least 20 minutes to navigate. I don't think most people playing KDIZD got past that level.

Deus Vult 2 is an anomaly - it does some seriously weird things with the Doom engine that ZDoom-based source-ports just don't like. And of course it'd be lame if you tried running it with Brutal Doom - it's the biggest pile of monster-spam in the history of Doom! Don't even try to play it with Russian Overkill. The claustrophobic style of the maps makes all the explosive weapons a pain to even use.

This one was pretty drat fun with a lot of nice gimmicks, and definitely had some pretty good intensity. But since misterdoo might want to play it, spoiler tags for the rest of this one: Problem is, it was pointlessly bleak. It was Die Hard without any possible happy ending as far as I could find (and Google, too). Also I think part of the reason I found it fun was that even with the "realistic" mission statement (which I think is part of the reason for the bleakness... whatever) removing crosshairs and healing, I'd played so many HL1 mods that I didn't find myself really needing either. Anyways, I'd recommend finding weapon mods that are compatible with single player and playing through map packs. Most of the satisfying experiences I had in HL1 were multiplayer mods and, well, they're all dead. Sure, you'll find the odd AHL game or Firearms server banging around, but it's not much. Speaking of map packs, I had/have a few that I really liked and can't remember the names of. I'll have to try and describe them, because hopefully one of you bastards know what I'm talking about. Oh, and RE: Brutal Doom... I loving love it but I recognize it's basically not playing Doom anymore by that point. Plays kind of like how I'd want a modern Doom game to play. Each their own, live and let frag, I guess. LvK fucked around with this message at 06:48 on Jun 4, 2012 |

So apparently HeXen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel from Steam comes unpatched, and as a result it's music will not play. I grabbed the 1.1 patch, but it won't run under Windows regardless of compatibility settings. It isn't a big deal if I can't fix it (I mostly wanted HeXen to round out my collection of Doom engine games), but does anyone have experience fixing it?

Rather Dashing posted:Wait, what? Azure Sheep was the tits! Overstatement. It was pretty mediocre in retrospect, though. The only thing that stood out was the annoying turret-over-spawning-vortigaunts bit and Adrian Shepard's sequence, which spoofed the normally hostile HECU into being friendly for a while (the non OpFor HECU, oddly). Other than that, I remember the level design being pretty crap and bland. Speaking of mods that take place during HL1, was Case Closed and Sweet Half-Life any good? And I remember reading about a SP mod that has you control some attorney who was eating lunch in a cafe when the Resonance Cascade strikes. HL: Redemption needs a source port.

Psychic supports both Heretic and Hexen, but I didn't find it very good, and even if it were I'm not convinced it would be enough to save Hexen. If you can find a port of Heretic to Duke3d you could play through it in War of Attrition, maybe, and I'd think it's more likely that someone would have ported Heretic to Duke3d rather than demaking it in Doom. Hmm. I wonder how hard it would be to implement Attrition in gzDoom? It's certainly possible, AEoD and Psychic between them do most of the same stuff...

I think I last played the Specialists in 2009 and was amazed that a) people still played it but b) they mostly roleplayed. I guess they needed a way to keep the game interesting, but didn't want to just start playing a different game. I've never roleplayed before but I guess it must be pretty drat fun... I also played Firearms around that time. At any given time, there would be four servers and 0 players, but if you joined one of the servers at the right time of day, eventually someone would join you. And then someone else, etc. I think the biggest game I was in that year had seven players but it was fun as hell. I used to play both those games when they were at their most popular, and it is so strange playing them now ('now' meaning 2009 gaaah where did the time go). It feels like I'm returning to my hometown after many years away, and it's deserted except somewhere in the ruins is a secret society who I need to learn how to contact. It's pretty amazing that people still play these games that haven't been updated in half a decade or more, and these aren't even popular retail games - they're amateur gameplay mods for a popular retail game.

Is there any better way to search the doomworld/idgames archive? They've got a shitton of info on each item, including date, creator, score, title, game, etc, but there's no way to actually sort through it aside from a pretty incoherent 'highest rated' list. Finding anything recent seems to require trawling the Newstuff Archives on doomworld, and some of those reviews are painful. It's like ZDoom, Detail and Realm667 are dirty words there.

Mill Village posted:This is cool and all, but when will Aleph One support framerates higher then 30? Marathon 2 on the Xbox 360 runs at 60 FPS and its so much better that way. At a guess, never, because one of the devs is rabidly opposed to changes that will make the game more accessible or easier to play but everyone's generally cool with purely cosmetic upgrades. To be fair, I haven't seen this guy opine on framerates, but this is his take on making mouselook less poo poo: W'rkncacnter posted:The mouse is only "playable" if you take the time to get used to it, and only people that are already Marathon fans are going to take the time to do that. For the record, I'd be pretty pissed off if the engine changed so much as to allow a good mouse implementation. I'm just glad you finally posted so we can point to your post whenever this topic comes up, and tell people to STFU. He's said similar things about the possibility of letting the renderer use r-pitch rather than s-pitch so that it's less nausea-inducing, and uncapping pitch so that the player can look more than 30 degrees up or down. (There are also technical obstacles to all of these changes, but those are surmountable - if you're willing to fork A1 and make your own version, because he's repeatedly stated he'll veto any patches adding such features.) Given this, I'm guessing that removing the FPS lock would fall into the same category: no-one wants to tackle the (admittedly hairy) technical problems, because they know that doing so will just result in one of the project owners making GBS threads all over them.
