If you want something with a maltier base, try Victory Hop Devil. IPAs are a pretty broad style. Get a Stone IPA and a Hop Devil, and see which you enjoy most.

Just bought a 4 pack of Burton Baton along with a St. Somewhere Saison. I'm excited to try the St. Somewhere, they say on their website they do all open fermentations for their beers (all Belgians) making them pretty unique. Or I'll try my Lagunitas Alt. Or Unibroque 17. Or more homebrew. Or LA 31 Passion Fruit Wheat. I have too much beer, I must drink it all. CalvinDooglas posted:If you want something with a maltier base, try Victory Hop Devil. Hop Devil is still one of my all time favorite beers, it's just extremely drinkable and hoppy all at the same time. Edit: The saison is really delicious, I'm not sure if they distribute outside of FL but this is one excellent beer the yellow dart fucked around with this message at 02:36 on Jun 17, 2012 |

Speaking of good everyday single IPAs, I picked up a couple sixers from the store last time I ran in: Summit's Saga IPA, and Widmer's Shaddock IPA. They're both excellent daily drinkers, and will hang around in my normal Jai Alai/Two-Hearted/West Coast IPA/Stone IPA/Torpedo rotation as long as they hang around my area.

Chicago Goons: hope everyone had a good time tonight. Unfortunately (though maybe not...) I had other plans and ended up at a friend's bbq where I was able to have: Half Acre's Galactic Double Daisy Cutter (Good but not great in my opinion. It was more on the sweet/boozy side of DIPAs than hop-bomb- which I prefer- but didn't really hold up to the better versions of the style), Williamsburg Alewerks' Grand Illumination (solid barleywine), FFF's Baller Stout (Very good, extremely complex imperial stout blend), and... Why didn't anyone tell me GANDHI-BOT existed!?! Not because it's terribly good (it's okay) but because HOLY poo poo THAT'S THE BEST CAN EVER. EDIT: Also had Mikkeller's Texas Ranger. Good but was kind of weak on the pepper side. Almost non-existent. I greatly prefer Pipework's End of Days in regards to a pepper beer. Chicago folks should look out for that one. I think it's great. danbanana fucked around with this message at 05:52 on Jun 17, 2012 |

I'm in NJ area so no Bell's, Boulevard, FFF etc. Late as heck, but Carton Brewing's 077XX is out of this world, they're starting to compete for my favorite NJ brewery. Apollo from six point is also a solid choice. So I've never heard of Goose Island before, and I have a store that has tons of Sofie, Matilda, Pepe Nero, and Pere Jacques 2012 on the shelf at $8 a pop. What's so special about them?

I tried out RJ Rockers Black Perle the other night. This is the first black IPA to impress me, as I've usually found the style a bit of a muted compromise. It was like drinking a really nice porter with all the usual fixings, but with the addition of some initially intrusive hops. The balance improves a lot once it warms, though, so I'd recommend serving it more like a porter than an IPA. What really jumped out at me was that it felt and tasted like I was having a light-bodied 5% porter with some hops added in. It's a good thing they don't sell this in sixes--I could see myself plowing through several pretty quick. But it's 9.5%. Ouch. Was it worth the $9 I paid for a bomber? For a redemption of the style, it was a nice one time thing. It's a well put-together beer that drinks well. If it were cheaper and more readily available, though, this'd earn a venerated spot in my fridge. As is, there are better options at that price point. Edit: Oh, and I found out the hard way that Deviant Dale's cans are the exact same dimensions of Monster Energy Drinks. Oops. Kraven Moorhed fucked around with this message at 00:25 on Jun 18, 2012 |

Got back from Chicago last night after buying all the beers. Highlight of the trip, besides the Saturday night bottle share, was hitting up Half Acre on Sunday and finally collecting my winnings from their Cipher contest. Besides the beer I bought, they gave me all of this for free: T-shirt, beer mug, bottle of Akari Shogun, bottle of a barrel aged beer they haven't released and they only made 94 bottles of, un-applied labels for Akari Shogun because it's so . Also not pictured: a growler of fresh Daisy Cutter, and a quick tour of the brewery since my friend had not seen it before. Oh Half Acre, why do you have to be so amazing and yet so far away.

Whole Foods on P Street is nearby and they might actually still have Parabola left. You have to ask for it. Overall favorite place for beer and food for me is Granville Moore's, mostly becuase of lower prices than Brasserie Beck and more casual vibe. If you're willing to front the cash though, definitely check out Brasserie Beck. There are some other places nearby that are supposed to be good but I can't vouch for them. They are around Adams Morgan/Dupont: Scion, The Black Squirrel (pricy), Bourbon, Smoke & Barrel (said to have good food+beer)

Anyone have any experience with Blue Mountain? I picked up a Mandolin and a Dark Hollow since they were just shipped in today, but I see the ratings are kind of all over the place on ratebeer. Hope I didn't pick up a clunker, but even if I did, it led to a discovery that may be relevant (or already known) to other Richmond area goons--Total Wine Midlo has a surprising stock of Goose Island Sofie, Matilda, Pere Jacques, and Pepe Noir. I'm proud to say that I came out with my new friend Pere. According to the cashier, this has only been the case for the past three weeks or so. Is this likely to continue? I might have to scramble for more disposable income to stock up if it's not the case.

I really need to check out E Street Cinema. Big supporter of the Landmark theaters in Dallas and I'm sure the one here screens quality movies too. Besides Dukem, I'm pretty fond of a lot of places along U Street. Oohs and Aahhs has legit soul food/meat and three (ie: fried chicken, collard greens, shrimp and grits, think that sort of thing). Plus keep in mind this is coming from someone who's lived in the South for most of his life. The Standard and American Ice are both good places where you can be outside and have a beer with good food. Taylor Gourmet on 14th has kickass sandwiches. Bistro La Bonne is one of the more affordable French restaurants (mussels, frites, and a beer for $15 at happy hour) and most of their drafts are American craft. The SE area (Eastern Market/Capitol Hill) seems pretty interesting too, but I haven't really explored it outside the market. May wanna look that neighborhood up on Wikitravel/Chowhound for some highlights. It's great place to wander early on a Saturday/Sunday and unlike the Mall, it didn't have a huge swarm of people.
