Terry Funk goes for ten mile rides on his bike. Terry Funk, who was told in 1997 that he would probably never walk again if he ever wrestled again.

Jesus, Terry Funk will survive everything and be left sitting with Keith Richards and some Cockroaches at the end of time.

When the WWE Legends of Wrestling roundtable did their Badasses episode, I was a little shocked that Terry wasn't included. He's tougher than hell and not someone you want to try in the ring, either - Road Dogg and Billy Gunn are on record saying that his left hand is a beast.

Most of Terry's best work wasn't with WWE, and WWE is wrestling, so how can he be the toughest man in wrestling?

I guess they could show him wrestling a half decent match out of Hulk Hogan, that counts I guess. :)

They talked at length about Bruiser Brody and he never wrestled for Vince, so it's not that. Those roundtables are cool for that reason, actually - they ignore Vince's self-serving company line take on wrestling and mention a lot of guys who wouldn't get mentioned in any other context.

I seem to remember one with Bischoff where they spend the time burying Lex Luger for leaving the WWF and joining WCW. Which was weird to say the least. Bischoff is talking poo poo about Luger I'm thinking "BUT YOU SIGNED HIM ANYWAY!"

He also claims: "Lex Luger? I don't want him, I don't need him." considering the deadwood they ended up signing from the WWF I find that hard to believe.

Bischoff had this strange attitude about Luger in 95 where he said he didn't want to sign him for the first Nitro but Sting had to talk him into it. Now, thinking about it you have to be a loving retard not to see how awesome Luger walking into Nitro would be and absolutely anyone, even if they think Luger is a useless lug would bring him in for it. Luger was even willing to take a pay cut to do it.

That leads me to believe that Bischoff was never being a negotiating mastermind to make Luger take a paycut nor was he a genius for bringing him over. He was actually willing to turn Luger down and had to be talked into signing him by Sting to bring him in.

Eric Bischoff is stupid.

This is a fair point, although I can understand anyone's hesitance about hiring Luger, since he had a reputation for being an rear end in a top hat (in the locker room as well as the office) who wasn't worth his price tag, pay cut or not. But yes, Bischoff has a creative memory when it comes to hiding his inexperience in wrestling.

Also, Bischoff was interviewer/announcer when Luger was a top guy for WCW in the early 90's and for all we know, Luger might have been a dick to him then. Then again, this is the same guy who claims he didn't raid ECW's talent, then goes on to describe exactly how he did it. I think he's under the impression that because he didn't break any laws by signing Malenko, Eddy and Benoit that somehow, that isn't a talent raid.

To be completely fair, Bischoff is correct. There is no such thing as a talent raid and to call what Vince did in the 80s a talent acquisition but what Bischoff did to ECW a talent raid is unfair. Vince forced promotions like Stampede to close down and then took their top talent as almost a slave bargain. It wasn't like Eric took ECW's TV slot with their best wrestlers.

Fact is, I don't believe anyone in ECW at the time were under a binding contract. If you are not under contract, meaning any other company can sign you at any time, why is it a talent raid?

I always thought that was Heyman's little way to get sympathy for himself. When they did the segment on the documentary Heyman couldn't argue his point. He could just insult Bischoff.

The problem with Paul complaining about it is:

1. Benoit was in WCW in the early 90s. I think Eddie worked a few rounds too.
2. They were getting more "cred" for their work in Japan than ECW. Japan is why ECW brought them in.
3. When it comes to the luchadores, revisionist history seems to forget the When Worlds Collide AAA PPV in 1994 that drew 13,000 in Los Angeles and was a big eye opener to America for Lucha wrestling in Mexico. This was why luchadors was on Bischoff's radar, not ECW. ECW just happened to be a place where Konnan got a bunch of them work in America.

Also, WWF had the same shot at Benoit that WCW did. Benoit even had tryout matches in the WWF, one against Owen Hart that somehow never got filmed (or nobody owns a copy of it). The reason he went to WCW was because WWF refused any tours in Japan for Benoit while WCW lied and said he'd be allowed to do them.

Just so we're clear, Bischoff is a lying, stupid rear end in a top hat who did nothing wrong when signing talent from ECW. Heyman is a lying, intelligent rear end in a top hat who tried to get sympathy from the ECW cultists. And Vince gets to laugh about it because he won.

The interview with Perry Saturn from Sunday's LAW is really loving sad. He was so ripped on drugs towards the end of WCW and half of his WWE run that he doesn't even remember a thing about his European title reign. He was also not present enough to know about Eddie and Benoit's and John Kronus' deaths until days later and was homeless and on drugs for two years, basically becoming a recluse.

Perry Saturn posted:

I was such a bad drug addict, I don’t remember decades. I was recently at the WWE training center, I was watching some matches with Shaul Guerrero, Eddie Guerrero’s daughter. There was a match with me and Eddie, and I won the European title from Eddie. I can’t ever remember being European Champion. I have no idea who I lost the belt to or anything. Decades where I was screwed up on drugs, and all that time I don’t have a memory, or a very clouded memory that I can’t piece together.

Saturn was extremely remorseful about that once he was reminded of it - he took a snap mare wrong and freaked out, and then the jobber took a bad bump out of the ring when Saturn threw him out so he could calm himself down.

I haven't heard the interview yet but this is pretty much spot on IMO, although far from unique to that particular storyline. A main reason WWE is still afloat is because a decent chunk of their core business audience thinks the product completely blows (because it does) yet still watches RAWs and PPVs.

It's quite cathartic to just stop watching, if you're one of those people.

Edit: Yeah, even for a while when Impact was poo poo, they consistently put on great PPVs. The booking mentality at the time was "we will make a card full of great wrestling at the PPV, and book the storylines back from there"

So you'd get stupid angles a lot of the time, but at least the payoff would be Joe vs Daniels vs AJ, rather than Crimson vs Morgan.
