That being said the game also owns right out of the box, just make sure you remember that while it may look like a third person shooter, it's running an RPG engine; lining up a pistol shot doesn't mean anything unless you're taking the time to get a critical hit lined up. You can't just run around and shoot and hope to hit anything, you've got to aim.

Crappy Jack makes a point that new players would probably be well served by taking to heart. This game looks like a third-person shooter and the opening two areas would seem to reinforce that, but if you play it like a shooter you're probably going to have a terrible time. AP really needs to be approached as an RPG. You're not going to be effective with your guns until you have some points in them. I think many of us have played this with stealth and hand-to-hand as our primary tools. I only put points into pistols because chain-shot is the easiest / best way to handle most boss battles and also makes a great "panic-button" for when you're caught out.

IIRC, most of the game is specifically hard-coded because Obsidian thought the gameplay was perfect just the way it is and should not be messed with by any "users" who surely wouldn't know what they're doing.

The game didn't even ship in a way that some of us were happy with, we certainly didn't want to intentionally lock users out of changing it

If I recall, all the values for weapon damage, accuracy, noise values, etc. are completely exposed in the plain text .ini files, so you can change that however you want. One of the ini changes I put in the OP actually slows down your run and walk speed, which I guess makes the game a little harder but makes the run animations less glidey. I've seen some more extensive ini change sets around, but I've always thought the base values that shipped were fine.

I just finished a 'shotgun-rear end in a top hat' playthrough, choosing engineer as a specialist type, and loved it. Being an overly aggressive jerk that just executes everybody was stupidly fun, and I also discovered loads of things that I never knew before, including getting to kill Parker and Marburg who have somehow managed to evade me on my previous five play throughs. Also executing Sis and then calling up Albatross just to make fun of him was hilarious, in an incredibly sadistic kind of way. And I got to sail off into the sun with Heck, which was brilliant. I don't think I've played a game six times and still found new stuff, and still have an urge to play it, since Ultima VII.

Reinstalled AP yesterday. Proceeded to get my rear end handed to me. Why did I start this old file on Hard? And once again I'm reminded that while the plot and the branching dialogues and pissing off Darcy from day one are fantastic, the actual gameplay still comes out as lackluster. Clearly I need to shoot Marburg some more to make me feel better.

Weird thing happened in my latest all-suave playthrough, dubiously titled: "James Bond saves the world and takes down Halbech through being a complete jackass" First, and not terribly important: Occasional dialog in the late / end-game somehow 'slipped' and seemed to refer to Sung surviving the assassination attempt and the riots happening, despite the fact that I chose the alternative option back in Taipei. This wasn't consistent, but it was..weird. Far more confusingly, I played a well-meaning (except for murdering the poo poo out of Conrad Marburg in Rome for the first time, hell yes) suave character who didn't overly piss off any other factions, especially G22. I had +2 or +3 with Albatross, and the game wouldn't let me choose him as an end-game handler, despite SIE being offered to me even though I was -1 with her. I hadn't done anything terribly wrong to Albatross: I didn't kill Sis, I didn't tell Albatross about the locket, I chose him for the Moscow missions, I didn't choose any of the dick response options to him. What gives? The only thing I can think of is that I replied to Heck's email in the final safe house before reading Albatross' - the reply that you send to heck saying "Hey, are you up for busting some heads?". Anyone got any clues?
|
# ? Jun 22, 2012 01:03 |
Yeah, how do you actually get Albatross for the handler for that mission? I enjoyed that I kicked sis's rear end and taunted Albatross about it in Moscow, but then because I ignored SIE altogether, he called me and was like I loving hate your guts but if you're attacking the embassy we have absolutely no choice but to work together, you son of a bitch. But how do you get him for the final mission?

You have to not do what you did (don't kill his friends and taunt him about it)

Try doing Taipei last after meeting both SIE and Albatross. I've had Albatross as an option before, when making everyone happy (Thorton Inc.)

This loving game... I just finished it for probably the 5th or 6th time, and of course I ran into things that I had never seen before. I fought Westridge at the end, but wound up being able to kill him AND Leland. It's always been one or the other. I didn't get to punch Leland during the chat before the final mission starts. It's one of my favorite moments in the game too... Scarlet revealed herself as the shooter, but I didn't get the option to kill her. I guess that's what happens when you have sex with someone. Brayko wouldn't spill the beans on Surkov, so I never got the final final mission in Moscow. I guess that's what happens when you shoot someone in the knee and/or are too busy shooting everyone to look for intel. I'd never done an assault rifle only play-through, it's a fun change of pace. It's deadly and overpowered for most of the game, but once most/all of the enemies are wearing body armor you have to either always get critical shots to the head, or unload at least half a clip into each person you fight. And why oh why didn't I ever read the emails about purchased intel? Some of the writing in this game is brilliant. My favorites were Heck's emails (especially the one about delivering cocaine laced with rat poison to Brayko) and the ones from the people interrogating Nasri after he's been arrested. Now it's time to start a hard, veteran, pistol-only, no body armor, pacifist death machine play-through. I'll tranq dart and throat punch every enemy I come across, but any time I can kill someone in a conversation that person's toast. God I love this game...

Glad you're loving the game, but don't do this. Not that a pistol only Veteran pacifist who wears civvie clothes isn't awesome, but playing on hard means you'll reach a point where a headshot with a tranq gun won't immediately take out a guard, meaning you'll end up setting off the alarm every time you try to take somebody out. I really recommend never playing hard mode, it's not fun, and if you want to play it for the achievement I recommend doing it with a character who doesn't value silence or the ability to do minigames. A rampaging rear end in a top hat who shoots everybody and prefers to kick down doors instead of trying to pick the locks (which becomes literally impossible to do due to hard mode's lowered time, unless you think you can routinely pick a 5-strength lock in exactly 5 seconds).

I've finally came back to AP today after several months of not playing. I remember a bit of annoying lag, but at present it's almost unplayable. I can get through 30 or so seconds of play, then at times I'll get a good 12 second pause, including in small areas, like boss fights, menus or during cutscenes. It's grating to say the least. I've done the following: - Patched the game to 1.1. - Edited the APGame and APEngine ini files, e.g.: MinSmoothedFrameRate=20 MaxSmoothedFrameRate=30 UseBackgroundLevelStreaming=false OnlyStreamInTextures=true OneFrameThreadLag=False - Reduced all of the graphic settings (1280x1024, most settings off or on low - I'm fairly sure this doesn't make a difference, at least to the duration of the loading times). - Closed every non-essential application in the background. Is there anything else I can do? Is the Steam (or even the X360) version any more reliable? I love the game but it's virtually unplayable. My specs are more than enough: 2GB Athlon CPU, 4GB of RAM (When I originally installed the game I had 2 GB - I presume I don't need to reinstall after upgrading...), Geforce GTS 450.

But, I never had any problems with it being unplayable or being laggy. Still, I have a problem with replaying RPGs - I'll do a very thorough first playthrough (typically 'good male'), then go online and read up on all of the different solutions and outcomes. Then one day I may decide to do a second run (typically 'evil bitch' because that covers games like Fable or Mass Effect - oh dear) but I'll get bored because I know, however vaguely, what will happen. I suppose AP is quite different there as it's impossible to really know or even do everything in a few playthroughs. If it wasn't for the technical issues I've encountered, I'm sure I'd be among the guys here raving about its brilliance, much like I profess Planescape: Torment as being one of the best written RPGs of all time. Needless to say, I love the model of ambiguous moral choices, the system is fantastic as it's exactly what happens in the real world and exactly what real agents and military leaders have to decide. The only game that comes close is The Witcher. I'd love to put the same into a TB or RT strategy game (Do you drat 20,000 lives as Churchill to protect the knowledge of dechipering the engima machine? Do you completely annihilate Dresden? Do you nuke two Japanese cities?). One small criticism with the moral choices is that apparently several people are related, like I've read that someone from Rome (Madison is related to Alan Parker) while in Taipei the secret police leader is actually the adopted son of the president or something (it's been a while). I suppose the point is to give the player major consequences for their actions if they go gunning everyone down and to make them think it over. In fact, that's the point of the two choices at the end of Saudi Arabia. Magic fucked around with this message at 21:41 on Jun 26, 2012 |

I absolutely love how reactive the game is to basically everything. One of my favorite things happened at the Moscow Embassy after smashing Grigori's face in cause hey this is rear end in a top hat Thorton. I approach the marines who have replaced the regular embassy guards, cause Grigori tipped them off about the possibility of an attack coming soon, and figure I'm gonna have to shoot my way in. I did it before and I remember it being really hard to convince the marines that you're friendly. As I waltz up in full body armor and assault rifle in hand, the guy at the front is like "drat it's good to see a fellow marine. We weren't sure if they were gonna send the backup we requested." I'm basically like what and play along and they let me right in with minimal questioning. I have to assume it was because of the wearing heavy armor thing. The game does comment on it at other points.
