exmorte posted:So I'm looking for some music involving an acoustic guitar that features lots of slides and drumbeats on the guitar itself. Basically something where almost the entire guitar is being used as various instruments. Check out a lot of the artists from Candyrat Records. Lots of stuff like that there. Andy McKee used to be signed there; Jimmy Wahlsteen is pretty good, and there's lots of really cool acoustic guitarists on it. Bonus: if you're a guitarist you can buy sheet music from them for their artists!

I asked a question that was similar to but not this question a year ago, and I got amazing answers, especially from Das Het. But, I am going to pretend like I didn't ask it, and ask a new question. I have been listening to Pitchfork's Africa 100: The Indestructible Beat compilation for the past week. It's a 100 track compilation of the most essential afrobeat tracks, and it is relentlessly good. I tried to find some more music on my own, but rateyourmusic.com is a wasteland, and the only person who anyone has heard of is Fela, so he dominates everything. I have this crazy feeling that more than one person has made music. So I am looking for suggestions. Compilations, artists, albums. Afrobeat, yoruba, highlife, and in a broader sense bordering on pejorative - African music. There's music on that continent, and I want to hear more of it. I would really appreciate any recommendations in this vein. Hooplah posted:Give me something like Saul Williams or Death Grips. Nah, someone will have something for you, but of all the "one of a kind" bands out there, I've really never heard anything like Death Grips.

But, I am going to pretend like I didn't ask it, and ask a new question. Hello again, First off, some corrections: Africa 100 is more than afrobeat, it covers a lot of different genres (although also omits a lot of essential stuff, for example IIRC it has no Congolese music, despite DR Congo having possibly the most vibrant music industry in Africa until the late '70s): afrobeat is a specific genre, and in it Fela is the alpha and the omega. Rateyourmusic.com is actually a really good source for this poo poo with a lot of active cataloguers of African music, but it can be a bit difficult to manoeuvre. Also, Yoruba is an ethnic group & their language, not a genre. Sticking to compilations mostly, adding more than totally essential single artist recordings would quadruple this list: Afrobeat & West African afrofunk in general: Afro Baby: The Evolution of the Afro-Sound in Nigeria 1970-79 Ghana Soundz: Afro-Beat, Funk and Fusion in 70's Ghana Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970s Funky Lagos Afro-Beat Airways: West African Shock Waves from Ghana & Togo 1972-79 Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump: Original Heavyweight Afrobeat Highlife & Afro-Funk Booniay!! Compilation of West African Funk Ivory Coast Soul: Afrofunk in Abidjan From 1972 to 1982 Soundway Records' Nigeria Special series, I think there's like five of them Ghana Special: Modern Highlife Afro-Sounds & Ghanaian Blues 1968-81 African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds from Benin & Togo 70s and most importantly, literally anything you can find by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou and, well, you know, Fela Ethio-jazz (a sort of blend of soul with jazz and Ethiopian music): Éthiopiques 10: Tezeta - Ethiopian Blues & Ballads Mahmoud Ahmed - Éthiopiques 7: Erè Mèla Mèla Multatu Astatqe - Éthiopiques 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale 1969-1974 Tlahoun Gèssèssè - Éthiopiques 17 Alèmayèhu Eshèté - Éthiopiques 9 Éthiopiques 8: Swinging Addis Gétatchèw Mèkurya - Éthiopiques 14 or, simply, The Very Best of Éthiopiques: Hypnotic Grooves From the Legendary Series Soukous (Congolese rumba): Franco - Francophonic Vol.1 1953 - 1980 & The Rough Guide to Franco Tabu Ley - The Voice of Lightness: Congo Classics 1961-1977 (also vol. 2) African Pearls Vol. 1: Rumba on the River African Pearls: Congo 70 - Rumba Rock Africa Boogaloo: The Latinization of West Africa Golden Afrique Vol. 1 & 2 Roots of Rumba Rock: Congo Classics 1953-1955 Other stuff: The World Ends: Afro Rock & Psychedelia in 1970's Nigeria Nigeria Rock Special: Psychedelic Afro-Rock & Fuzz Funk in 1970s Nigeria World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing - The Funky Fuzzy Sounds of West Africa Orchestra Baobab - Pirates Choice: The Legendary 1982 Session (afro-cuban jazz from, uhh, Senegal I think) Bembeya Jazz National - The Syliphone Years (Guinean jazz) Rail Band - Belle Epoque vol.1 & 2 - Soundiata (Malian supergroup) African Pearls: Sénégal 70 - Musical Effervescence (mbalax) African Disco: Deep Disco From 1970's Africa Ayobaness! - The Sound of South African House Angola Soundtrack: The Unique Sound of Luanda 1965-1976 African Pearls: Mali 70 - Electric Mali Bambara Mystic Soul: The Raw Sound of Burkina Faso 1974-1979 Ouaga Affair: Hard Won Sound of the Upper Volta 1974-1978 (get on my level)

I picked up Program Music I by Kashiwa Daisuke on a whim when I found it in a local record store. Not knowing what to expect, I listened to it and absolutely love it. He has an album and an EP on itunes that I'm going to get next month, but are there any other similar artists? I just don't have a clue even where to begin looking.

Ryuichi Sakamoto for more experimental piano driven stuff. This is going to sound very vague, and I apologize. I've never liked or listened to rap for the most part. Recently I came across The Next Episode by Dr. Dre on Spotify and I loved it. I have no idea what genre of rap that song is, but I liked every bit of it. Any recommendations on where to start my adventure into rap based on that? So for some reason I've been getting all into glitchy music. I think it's a thing that in music sounds pretty neat! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMezOwBpuh8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AS3vPS1b4Q So I found these songs. It's like a sort of glitchy shoegaze type thing? I like this song and this band and this album a lot. But it's the glitch sounds that really got me hooked. So, I guess, I'm asking for other artists that do another genre and incorporate glitch sounds into it. That'd be swell, tia.

I posted this in the bass thread in the musician's lounge but I think here might be a better place for it! Basically it's my boyfriend's birthday soon and he wants more CDs to play in his car, and since he plays bass I looked for a compilation of songs with really good basslines in, but it didn't seem to exist so I thought I could make my own. Unfortunately I don't know much about bass guitar so as well as asking his friend's I thought I'd try here. He likes mostly rock music but I'd be happy to put something a bit different on there if it had good bass or whatever. Any suggestions would be really helpful! Thanks.

Obviously, that's kinda vague, and we don't have access to his music collection, so you might be best served by combing through some "best bassists" and "best bassline"-type lists and grabbing a bunch of stuff you don't recognize. Further, if he generally listens to rock, maybe try to focus more on funk, soul, jazz, and African music like afrobeat and highlife (look through the last page for extensive lists of the latter ((and another post of Ras Het schooling after mine))). Thoughtful of you, by the way.

I keep listening to this metal version of "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5/Youtube user AndyRehfeldt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGFr06O3hwc I like the marriage of heavy instrumental and light-hearted/slightly rock-y vocals. I've really been enjoying Lone, Underground Resistance and I just discovered Around The World by Daft Punk and love it. Research tells me that I'm looking for either '90s house, deep house or Detroit techno. I really love that nostalgic, almost ambient quality of the first two, even in songs that are more upbeat and dance-able. Anything in that tradition (or not) is awesome.
