Hypnolobster posted:This is even more confusing than horse blanket. Horse blanket isn't confusing at all. You just need to get one of these. I've been living off of Goose Island Summertime and IPA recently because of how stupidly hot the weather's been. Getting them for free doesn't hurt either. But I got to try a few new things while hanging out with some friends last night: Russian River Beatification is very aggressively sour, but still drat tasty. Firestone Walker XV is rich, smooth and delicious, and Parabola is a very nice imperial stout. I can't really give much more detailed impressions of that, unfortunately, since I'd already had a few in me by the time those rolled around.

We're releasing Cognac barrel-aged Church on a Hill English Barley Wine tomorrow. No one knows yet, so this is the ~*~world exclusive~*~ announcement

Much like hydrocarbons and commodity chemicals, the best vessel from which to serve a geuze is a barge. Wait wait, geuze is apparently particularly fizzy if you think you need a flute for it? Opposite of that barge, whatever geometry and size of glass that maximizes glass contact area with a restricted opening. I know that just describes a flute but when dealing with relatives only you know what you actually have in the cupboard.

I'm just going by ratebeer/beeradvocate, both recommend a flute and I like to drink out of the correct glassware if I can. Edit: I opened a 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze and just poured it into my chalice for lack of a better choice, I think. Anyway this is pretty sour, but not so much that I can't enjoy it compared to others I've had. I only had a slight pucker on the first sip and now I'm able to pick up a very bright lemon sourness with some spice and funk to this. I see myself enjoying this one, what other geuzes should I try that are similar to this? Midorka fucked around with this message at 02:47 on Jul 6, 2012 |

I have a lot of branded glassware of all types, but I never use any of it. It just sort of accumulates due to my job. For regular use, I have some nonics. For tasting/note-taking/reviewing, I just use stemless red wine glasses. The nonics are easy to clean and pleasing to hold. The stemless glasses accentuate the different qualities I look for in appearance and in aroma and lend themselves to sipping, while the thinner walls seem to allow the beer to warm faster, which is also important if you want a complete picture of how a specific beer behaves. And they're dishwasher-safe and cheap/easy to replace, as well. Always important. I kind of laugh every time I see a BA review that begins with "Poured from a such-and-such into my [BIG NAME BREWERY] [HYPE-TRAIN BEER] [ULTRA-SPECIFIC GLASS STYLE]..." I am a mild glassware sperg and I will be the first to admit you can get away with a pint glass and a wine glass. Basically open top and restricted top. Getting more in depth than that leads into effervescent capacity which I find not incredibly important beyond aesthetic quality of a fizzy beverage continually fizzing throughout your drink.

Lindemans Cuvee Rene is good and easy to get; St. Louis Fond Tradition is also easy to get, although I don't love it. There's a lot of others, but it's hard to say whether you would like them. None of the reputable Belgian brands are going to be bad, just different; there's only like 6 or 7 authentic lambic producers you can get in the US, so you might as well try them all.

Random beer bits: I had 21st Amendment's "extra pale ale," Bitter American. Honestly, I thought it was watery; no body at all, although perhaps that was the point. It had more flavor than your typical "light beer," but it wasn't supposed to be a light beer, just a low alcohol one. I don't think I liked it at all. Also had Parabola on draft; it reminded me a lot of KBS, actually, although I think it basically did the things that KBS did better.

I think Parabola has a much heavier mouthfeel than KBS, which I find somewhat watery/light compared to other bigger bourbon aged stouts. Maybe because it starts as a coffee stout? I dunno. But Parabola is awesome.

I chalked it up to it being an old batch, but maybe it just isn't very good. The one that I had was on tap at a posh bar that was selling a lot of it due to it being "the lightest beer" they were selling (sit near the bartender in any craft beer centered bar and every girl that walks in with some smug dude trying to impress his girlfriend will ask for that exact beer). The problem is that when you have beer with no body at all, it just tastes like bitter, hoppy water, which isn't particularly interesting. Interestingly, 21AB's site says the grain bill is Golden Promise, 2-Row, Munich and Crystal, but I wouldn't have been surprised at all to find it was all 2-row.
