He was incomprehensible in the first few teasers and clips. If you've not been to the cinema in a few weeks you could be forgiven for that one. And let's face it, someone who hasn't seen Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Warrior or Inception has not been to the cinema enough.

In fairness, basing your publicity even partly on a US football team is gonna shoot your international marketing campaign in the foot a bit. How the hell do you swing that in a way that appeals in any way to say, Brits or Australians? You really can't.

I'm not going anywhere near the Dark Knight Rises thread largely because I don't want to watch it anyway, but thanks to the Arkham games I have some experience with Bane and quite like him. There's two main problems with it.

1. It's poorly weighted, like I said. It just looks bulky and silly and uncomfortable, and it leaves the rest of his head just looking empty in comparison. Sorta like they just didn't finish making the rest of the headpiece.

2. It's not Bane. I admit Bane looks silly, I mean the picture you posted is actually a faithful recreation of the guy. But it just... isn't anything like the character it's meant to be. Everyone else in the Nolan Batman movies have a realistic take on their iconic design, but this doesn't resemble Bane in the slightest.

It doesn't matter since people outside of the US will go "oh right, they play that bastard version of football there." instead of "ugh, it's got a sport I'm not familiar with! This has ruined the movie for me!" which you seem to be implying.
I don't even understand how it will have any impact on international marketing either. It's a thing in whatever city it was that the football team plays in? Why would they bother to bring it up in Melbourne or Auckland or Manchester?

In short, no one cares and won't hear about it. I don't think you realise this, but Brits, Australians and Kiwis for that matter, don't really give two fucks about American Football, outside of the Superbowl and that itself is a novelty at best. Is that what kiimo was whining about, re: the Steelers? First I've heard of it, because it hasn't even been mentioned, what with no one in New Zealand really giving paying any attention to the NFL.

Seriously though, I'm not even angry. Anyway, it's pretty stupid to suggest that bringing up an NFL team in the marketing of the film will be any way damaging to the international campaign at all. No one outside of the US cares about football, or even cares enough about it, nor will it have any significant impact either way on the likely box office.

I'm Australian, I know and completely agree, that's what I'm saying. Making a football team part of your marketing campaign is going to lead to that part of your campaign failing in the international market. I mean I don't care one way or the other, but it means that bit's going to fall flat and there's nothing you can do to change that.

I should say I don't mean 'fail' as in 'backfire', I mean 'fail' as in 'just doesn't work at all'. It won't make people go 'no, gently caress grid iron, I refuse to watch Batman because of it', it just won't make any impact at all.

I have a lot of more serious cultural black holes, but I'm sort of tempted to marathon the first 4 of these and then go see the 5th. I've never played the games, and all I know about the series is the unskippable trailer for the first one on my copy of 28 Days Later.

They keep being made for a reason, I guess, and I am compelled to understand that.

It's just something done domestically and in fact, I didn't even know there was a Steelers tie-in until it was brought up in this thread. Different territories use different ways of marketing films and in this case, I guess the US involved an NFL team. It's not really that different from the Rabbitohs being used to advertise Russell Crowe movies, even if the reason for it happening is different.

No sports team tie-in in my country. Just Domino's Pizza changing their pizza box so that it's covered in the art from TDKR teaser poster. Makes it look mysterious.

Not as funny as Kenny Rogers Roasters marketing Casino Royale. At one point in the commercial, they cut away from a scene focusing on Eva Green's curves lying on the bed to a shot of a whole chicken getting roasted. Was it a statement on how women are portrayed in movies? Who knows?

In a related news, a Malaysian airline company sponsored the Oakland Raiders despite not flying to anywhere in the States nor American Football having any sort of exposure in Malaysia. Even the CEO admits it will confuse people.

Here is another reason for the mask. In the comicbooks he wears a luchador's mask. While this might be threatening in the comics in movies it can come off rather...silly.
I don't have an issue with the mask (above it looking like a tarantulla crawling across his mouth). One thing the Batman movies have done is tried to bring real world applications (as much as you can) to a comicbook movie. They have explained the batsuit and the reason for the batsuit to have a cape. They have turned the Joker's grin into something hideous and unnerving and they have given Bane a reason to have a mask on him. Also Hardy looks drat imposing in the trailers.

Yea it would be hard to explain Bane because (and I only know this because of the Arkham games) he takes like radioactive steroids or some poo poo. Bane himself is like a super-human. Which doesn't exist in the Nolan Batmans.

Bane takes a drug called Venom, which pretty much pumps into his veins so he can "hulk out" whenever he wants to. I figure the painkillers will do a similar job in the movie (if he can't feel feel pain he won't need to stop).
One thing that looks to be carried on from the comics to the film is that Bane is also a master strategist, not just some brute force.

It would have to be meth and pain pills. And PCP or something. Pain pills will make you sleepy pretty quick.

But I was referring to his green glow and also his hulk size. Unless he drugs Batman and Batman hallucinates that Bane is far larger than he actually is.

Also all I was saying about the Steelers is that putting a football team in a comic book movie just seems kind of silly, especially when they all fall into a sinkhole and then I added the Steelers comment just because I don't really like the Steelers (nobody in America does save Pittsburgh) which is really neither here nor there.

As a non-yank I find American football extremely tedious but how the hell is it silly to include in the movie? It's not like they will show the entire 12 hour long game, just the bits where people get blown up.

Unless you know something I don't and the entire second half of the movie is like Escape to Victory except with American football instead of football. The epic conclusion of the trilogy is that Batman's team has to beat Bane's team in the big game.

And yes Bronson is really good. The next thing I saw Hardy in was Inception and I was just amazed that this was the same guy.

Since this is the posters thread and I mentioned Escape to Victory-
