It's kind of a myth that Americans would resist foreign occupation, because any invading force would do the same as we've done in Iraq and others before us: pick a local "white knight" or group and back them. Say what you will about the politics of TDKR, but at least they showed people joining up with Bane so they could get their licks in at the power structure, be it the wealthy or the police.

I can't remember where it was (I want to say PYF) but recently someone made a pretty great post about how the V for Vendetta movie failed the source material because it operated on the idea that soldiers wouldn't mow down their fellow countrymen and people already hated the totalitarian regime and were just looking for an opening to rebel, while the comic was all about how the military and the populace openly embraced fascism and enjoyed the security it provided while knowing what it cost to get it.

Or it's like Firewall or Hostage, where the main character has special access to something the hostage-takers want or need to have done and, for the lead, doing so is tantamount to a crime.
