Sadly, there may be some economic truth behind their policy. The assumption is that people don't like old movies, which has been a problem since, well, forever (hence copyright dates being in Roman numerals so that stupid people can't work them out.) And it costs money to do an HD transfer and go through all the clearances to anyone who's getting residuals, so there's a legit question as to whether a given Blu-Ray release will actually earn a profit.

I think it's the audience that needs to change. I can see how genuinely old movies can be hard to access because they're so different, but I legitimately cannot understand anyone not wanting to watch a movie because it was made in, say, 1998.

Limiting based on when it was made is something either mentally disabled or stupid people do. Usually the latter.

By the way, details are out on Lawrence of Arabia. The gift set includes more extras including a newly reconstructed deleted scene and the soundtrack on CD. Also has a genuine 70mm frame along with a hardcover book.

Snatched up Adventures in Babysitting and Grosse Pointe Blank yesterday. I'm a little disappointed that they didn't bother to get any interviews or even a commentary for them, especially since they're both marketed as "Anniversary" editions. Even so, I'm just so happy to be able to upgrade from their old non-anamorphic dvds.

As far as I can tell, the Best Buy one is a digibook.

No idea if the disc is different or not.

What is the consensus on Koyaanisqatsi blu ray? It appears there are only the German and Australian versions released so far, and I'm willing to pay the $30 for the Australia one, I just want to be sure it's a good transfer. Also, it will play on a PS3, correct?

Nope, and who knows when; if there's a rhyme or reason to which less-popular/non-famous ones get blurayified, I'd like to know, too. The Color of Money of all things just got a bluray, but there are so many great ones left (in the approximate order I'd like to have them): The Age of Innocence, BotD, The King of Comedy, After Hours, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Kundun, Who's that Knocking, Boxcar Bertha, a bunch of documentaries, and probably other things.

Yesterday I went to Best Buy hoping to grab a copy of the Jaws digibook, only to find that every single copy, digibook or not, was gone. Turns out each store only received a small handful, and it's completely sold out on Best Buy's website.

Is there any chance at all that they'll restock any time soon, or am I just completely SOL?

I didn't fully appreciate your post. I went to BB tonight and found that they were out of the special edition and had few regular copies left. There was one of those little paper slips attached to the empty rack, a correction slip for like when they advertise the wrong price. But in this case, it was to inform the consumer that each store was given TWO copies.

TWO. MOTHERFUCKING. COPIES.

I can't imagine why BB is on the brink of going out of business.

Yeah, for a popular catalog title like loving JAWS, to only do such a limited run is just a bald-faced attempt at creating a rare, overpriced DVD.

Keep checking Best Buy's website, though. If they restock tomorrow, they'll have it listed online. I found one listed at the BB in the next town over, so this morning I arranged for an in-store pickup (your only option if you order online). Otherwise, just keep going back and looking.

I hate that I've become this determined to get one of these drat things, but there's absolutely no reason for such a limited run.

Thank god I decided to grab it when I went in to get the Royal Tenenbaums. I had totally forgotten it was coming out, went over and looked at the digibook and the regular edition. I couldn't see any difference between them except for the booklet part and the ultraviolet copy that came with the digibook. Almost bought the normal but they were already running low on the digibook and the "must have this poo poo" part of my brain kicked in.

We had a lot more than 2 copies at our BB though. That sounds like a load of poo poo excuse.

I saw 3 copies when I bought mine. I honestly have a little bit of buyer's remorse about it. The digibook isn't really worth the extra $7. It's also incredibly annoying that they just ported over some of the features from the DVD, especially the photo archives which are all like 150x200px jpegs. The photo archives are probably the most interesting thing on the Close Encounters set aside from the film itself.

Same discs, just comes with a thicker case with a booklet attached to the middle. I'll attach some pictures in a minute.

Same here. The problem with digital copies/ultraviolet stuff is that they're never compatible unless you have Apple poo poo(or whatever plays protected windows media files...which the Zune can't even do last I checked). I have an android phone, and even if the ultraviolet stuff works with it I am assuming it will refuse to play because my phone is rooted. That's why digital copy is poo poo unless you own an iStatus device.

Not to piss on anyone's parade, but this exact thing was promised a few years ago and at the last minute someone pulled the plug on it. If you'll notice, the date on that article is not all that recent. I'd be delighted if this was true, but I'll only believe it when I see it.
