There's probably a couple of reasons for that. I believe the B-36 at Pima was the last one ever built, so it would have only been in service for about five years before retiring, which would have reduced the number of pressurization cycles the airframe went through. Photos taken during the restoration process do show quite a bit of wrinkling on the fuselage, and although it's still fairly visible in person, I'm guessing the relatively fresh coat of paint makes it look a lot better than the surviving aircraft that haven't been painted recently.

Advent Horizon posted:That looks like Race 74 to me. It was Race 74. I just saw that plane last Saturday for a wedding reception at the Fargo Air Museum, and was really looking forward to seeing it perform this weekend. I was listening to FAR tower when Cripes A' Mighty 3rd was being ferried over to BAC, which built up the excitement even more. Bob was scheduled to do a performance in both 74 and Cripes. When it went up in spring for the first time since its engine rebuild (with Cripes as a fly-along) I heard them leaving and returning to Fargo. The R-4360 was making metal back then, so it had to be reworked again. Initial reports are that it looked like he was trying to leave the cockpit when the plane crashed. Bob was probably one of the most experienced pilots I've ever met, and whatever went wrong was probably incredibly unfortunate timing for him to not recover without better results. Very sad.

That's where they do a lot of their "current airframe, future system" testing. AWACS testbed, and E-737 programs are both up there, and the Airborne Laser used to be. But there's probably a bunch of airplanes on sticks, so who knows.

While I was out in my garden doing some work, I caught a glimpse (and, of course, the sound) of the XH558 Vulcan having a play, pulling the usual low-and-slow turns they use for a display a few miles away. Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU1VSCph-G8 It's such an awesome bit of kit. Every now and then you'll get a bit where the resonance causes the famous "Vulcan howl", and it briefly sounds like a forty-ton TIE fighter.

Boeing owns it, no idea what they're going to do with it. I think it started off in Arizona earlier in the year, Portland to Seattle was its last leg. It's a big son of a bitch (135' long x 29' wide and 15' high,) I don't think there's enough clearance in some of the rail tunnels around here. They've only been moving it late at night since Friday as the convoy plugs along at 45 MPH on the interstate. Should have arrived this morning. Someone got some good close ups of it at a rest stop. http://www.flickr.com/photos/truckexposure/

It could only carry 2 'technicians' as passengers. It was actually used in Russia, but (shock!) was not economical as a crop duster, and the order of 3000 was cancelled and only 175 were built. Given it's slow speed (slowest mass produced jet in the world), I doubt it would do very well in a combat environment trying to deliver chemical weapons.

The cessna camera ship was hired to film the Super Cub and apparently just didn't see the Husky at all. The Husky managed to get a hole burned in his wing from the exhaust, as well as managing to land on the beach with one flap fully down and one retracted. Extremely good work on his part.
