Square-Enix seems to think 'go home, wash your face' is a perfectly acceptable English translation for at least one of their games (~2:50 of the video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6m6aKWuFMU

Jimmy Colorado posted:Outrageously off-topic, but reading this reminded me of something and I didn't want to forget: considering it's time slot, is it safe to say it's not really a kid's show? I just finished a play through of Bionic Commando, but the Japanese title is something like "The Secret Resurrection of Hitler!" For the NA release, they cleaned up all the swastikas and SS thunderbolt things (although they left in the big bad as basically... well, Hitler) and replaced them with eagles or albatrosses or whatever. I bring it up because I think the game itself could at least make for a decent DVD challenge, IF Arino could get a handle on the swinging mechanic. If not, well, he'd never get past Area 6. But despite all that, would the nazi imagery make it a non-starter as a challenge game? Nintendo's standards for publication in western countries were absolutely rigid in the 80's and early 90's because they were terrified of any bad press. So they had people remove all kinds of things they were nervous about from games. It's just not as big of deal in Japan so all the Nazis in Bionic Commando wouldn't even register. I've been expecting it to turn up as a challenge for some time. As another example of Nazi's not being a big deal in Japan, here's a commercial for Famicom Wars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2igwEcYaPE&t=39s . One more thing about a possible Bionic Commando challenge: it would be the first episode banned in Germany!

The joke is that they are all terribly written. The best way to put it would be something like "You've heard how the mafia has been abducting children here?" or something like that. The bottom two are really wordy and phrase it in this hard to parse way. Like, yeah, I can understand it, but it takes a little bit of time. Would Japanese grammar have it presented closer to what's in the subtitles?

On a completely different topic, who are Mouri and Hashimoto? They're mentioned in the Project: CX Joystick intro, as well as in a Famicom game mentioned in the chronology-type corner where they were playable along with Takahashi. I'd assume they're other popular gamers from that era, but what would they be known for? Also, I look forward to seeing the Comix Zone episode subtitled, if only to see the amusing (to me) Retro Read-Along. It's from Megaman X.

Though I would like to hear more about how Japan displays their side during the War, but I imagine a lot of it is like Germany and nobody talks about what they did to China, but this probably isn't the page for that.

Theyre a convinent villian because you dont have to bother feeling sympathy for them, thats the niche that has been created for Nazis in American popular culture, the Dude Its OK To Shoot. That sterotype doesnt exist in Japanese popular culture, and it was interesting to see. Also whats that stuff about more character depth, etc? You sound like your projecting.

You are saying the Nazi's in American fiction are used for nothing more than cannon fodder whereas in Japanese culture they are not. By making a Nazi character more than a cackling villain they are adding depth to their character are they not? And you've taken one character in one manga to be indicative of every piece of Japanese fiction just like you've taken Wolfenstein 3D to be indicative of all American fiction featuring Nazis.

Some of my fighting game friends really like it, some characters essentially have a projection that they can move around independently on the battlefield which can make for some interesting dynamics. Of course its broken as hell, to the point that one character has to be banned because he has infinite combos.
