Never heard any complaints about the original Atrix; at least nothing as bad as the X2. I actually really liked my X2 but pulling out of my pocket and unlocking it only to have it restart on me at least once a day was infuriating. If it didn't do that, there's a good chance I would still have it today.

I think the combination of the OS not properly supporting dual-core phones until what, 2.3? (those phones shipped with 2.2 IIRC) and the Tegra 2 being underwhelming performance wise led to problems.

Sprint's Photon 4G was an okay phone. It wasn't very exciting, but also didn't have any huge shortcomings at launch. In hindsight it's terrible because it'll probably be stuck on Gingerbread forever and Sprint's trying to distance themselves from their WiMax devices as quickly as possible.

I wasted an upgrade on a Droid X2. It was indeed a loving terrible phone: nothing but problems. I exchanged it for replacements 4 times because it randomly restarted on me at least once a day. I finally had them send me a Droid 3 and never really looked back.

Motorola usually makes rock-solid phones, but something went terribly wrong with the X2.

I had the same problem with my Droid X. Glad to see they fixed that for the sequel.

If I give my off-contract iPhone 4 to someone with a dumbphone on Verizon, can they use it without paying for a data plan? Turn off 3G data, use Wifi only for data?

Don't be sad that I am gone.
Is there some trick to getting a decent Verizon bill? I get a 19% discount through my work and if I switched it would be ~90ish a month. Sprint and AT&T both are under 80 after taxes. 60ish before. Is the secret being on a family plan or being grandfathered in from an old plan?

See, I disagree here. My X was awesome. I football spiked it at the floor and it still worked, and did not break the screen. It also ran great on liberty rom and even the stock OTA updates late game wernt bad. It was a solid phone. My razr reminds me of it a lot.

Minus the boot loader the atrix was a pretty solid phone with some quality control issues near the end. Loved mine.

Verizon's a really lovely deal right now and basically the only reason to switch to them is if you're getting a totally unacceptable level of service with your current carrier. Basically they force you to buy texting, but they didn't slash its cost like Sprint did when they force-bundled.

Grandfathered family plan for life. I pay $48/month for unlimited data and some minutes, which is ~$52-53 after taxes.

Loved my Droid X as well. I still have it and use it to play games that haven't been updated to work on my Nexus. I dropped it face-first on a rock and it did absolutely no damage to the screen and I just had to brush away broken bits of rock. I keep it laying around in airplane mode and it can last over a week on a charge, using with the original battery. When I was using it as my phone, it would go two days on a charge with regular use. The screen size is perfect and it feels good in the hand. If Motorola made another one with the same size screen but 720x1280 I would totally buy it. The RAZR M is almost there so I haven't given up hope yet.

I have no socially redeeming value.
On Friday I will be a new (old) Verizon customer as I am switching over from Sprint. I will have an iPhone 5 (assuming it's delivered) and I am taking an international trip the following week.

Is there any way I can have Verizon unlock the sim card on my iPhone without needing to be a paid customer for 60 days? I'd really like to use the phone overseas with a 3rd party SIM.

Stupidity, its both physically and mentally painful.
The main line on our account has unlimited data, is it possible to switch data plans with my newly added line? Basically I want the unlimited. My parents hardly use their data but they'd like to keep their grandfathered plan with unlimited texting and calling.

Figured it would be better then switching the numbers.

Early upgrades can happen, but Feb would be a real stretch. And Verizon couldn't give two shits if you like your current phone or not.

I have two iPhone 5s coming in tomorrow, but I'm selling them both. Will the nanoSIMs already in the phones be locked to my account? Should I meet my sellers at the Verizon store and have them take out the SIM and get a new one, or can they just bring the phone in and do that? I've never "gifted" a phone, so I'm unfamiliar with how it works.

For those of you in the know, I wanted see if you guys could confirm the unlimited data loophole regarding a family account after you've ordered the phone:

1. Receive Phone
2. Activate phone on the line that the phone was ordered on.
3. Call/go to Verizon 3rd party store and get the phone switched to the desired line + reactive dumbphone onto the line that the phone was ordered on.

Step 2 is required, correct?

I'm finally making the jump from a dumbphone to the iPhone 5 that should arrive tomorrow. I've had Verizon's Backup Assistant on this current phone, so my contacts should be backed up somewhere. Is the "VZ Contact Transfer" app the best way of getting the contacts onto the iPhone? It seems like it should be simple enough, but the reviews are overwhelmingly 1 star.

If that app doesn't work, and the reviews make it look pretty janky, here's another way to do it.

There's a web interface for backup assistant where you can export all your contacts as a vcard file. Hit the "select all" link, then in the drop-down menu directly to the right of that, hit "export."

https://nbillpay.verizonwireless.com/ba/secure/backupassistant.action

Sign into icloud.com (make an Apple ID if you don't already have one), then go to the contacts view. You can drag that vcard file into the address book to slurp the contacts into iCloud. Then you can just keep your iCloud contacts synced with your phone and never have to worry about it again.

Oh no
From what I've been told, that's correct (except I was asking about buying the phone in store).

The manager there told me that step 2 was necessary, or I'd lose unlimited data. She also said it would take "an hour or two" so I'm not sure how long you have to keep the phone activated on the first line.

SeaborneClink
Aug 27, 2010

MAWP... MAWP!
Is the unlimited data on the line the phone was "ordered for"? Or is it on your self described "desired line."

If it's the latter, that's not a loophole, it's an alternate upgrade. If it's on the line that the phone was "ordered for" then you've already had the unlimited data removed.

Connecting an iPhone to iTunes does nothing related to verizon wireless. You can "activate" an iPhone that isn't attached to a number by following the setup process("activate" through wifi or cellular are your options). When the phone tries to provision in the background multiple times and fail, you'll get the message that the phone failed activation and to call your carrier.

I've looked around for an answer for this but I'm seeing some conflicting reports. I have a family share plan with 2 lines: one line has unlimited data, and the other line has a dumbphone with no data. What I want to do is use the device upgrade on the dumbphone line, use the new device on the unlimited line, use the old dumbphone on the dumbphone line, and kill the data plan that gets added to the dumbphone line. So the dumbphone line gets a new 2-year contract but with no price increase, while the unlimited line stays the same but with a new device.

Some people are saying that this works, some are saying that you get an ETF. I'll probably be buying directly from Verizon (or maybe Apple for the iPhone) if that makes a difference. What's the deal on this? I'm sure someone has done this before.

Thanks, that's good to hear. On a related note, how does the SIM card work? Do new phones just not come with one? Or do they come with one that is linked on Verizon's side with the upgraded line? Or do they come with one that is clean/unlinked and can be activated to any line? If I already have a 4G SIM and I go in and get a new nano-SIM for the iPhone, will my old one stop working since it gets unlinked in favor of the new SIM? I see there was some talk about this on this very page but I'm still a bit confused.

I have a few months left on my contract so I couldn't get a subsidized iPhone 5 to replace my 4S, so I bought it from Verizon as a new line figuring it's better to pay the $200 ETF and just get a new number than full price for a 64GB.

All well and good, and I've already canceled service on my 4S and shipped it off to a buyer on SA Mart. But after 1 day of use I am totally convinced that the data cap is just not tenable. My old plan had unlimited data, so I called and played dumb about yesterday's cancelation request and asked if they could undo it, swap plans on devices, and then cancel the new one. I know that's now a $350 ETF, but I'd rather pay that once and just not have to worry about managing data usage. Seriously, gently caress that bullshit.

I'm surprised that the Verizon rep on the phone actually understand my intentions, why I want to swap and keep unlimited, and is letting me do it. They put my new number on a crap phone there at their place and told me to call in 24 hours to do the swap & cancel.

I'll believe it when it's done, but actually impressed at the customer service here.

Edit: Actually I see how to do the plan swap myself on their site. The girl on the phone told me standard policy 24 hours before I can change it but in reality it would probably be less. Anyone know how long it should actually take?

Edit 2: Well it only took about 12 hours and I activated it myself. I'm really surprised they were so willing to help me with this, especially a day after I told them to cancel my line with unlimited data. But now I've got my original number and unlimited LTE on my iPhone 5 :smug: Of course my next bill is going to suuuck but the one time cost is worth it to me to not have to constantly be watching my usage. Freedom has no price.
