Hard drive died yesterday. But I ordered an SSD to replace it, so Also I don't know what to do with my day. I went outside and there was this super bright disk suspended in the sky. It frightens me.

Get a xbox 360 wireless reciever 2. Get the steam beta big picture mode, put in steam in startup 3. Get hdmi cable 4. Get boot champ http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/28468/bootchamp 5. To play on your tv, hook in hdmi, choose bootchamp restart into windows, wait 2 minutes, double tap your xbox guide button, play. Works amazingly well. Bonus: Leave the screen open, and double tap command p to switch video output to TV only to help save your display. It's the best console I've ever had.

I just ordered a refurbished June 2012, 15" non-retina MBP. I want to upgrade the SSD and RAM myself, so I was planning on ordering the Crucial 256GB M4 2.5" drive, and some DDR3 PC3-12800 RAM. Are these the right parts? Is it worth getting 16gigs of RAM, or should I just stick to 8? I plan on using this laptop for music production, so I think the extra ram will help loading samples in ableton live, or running multiple VSTs.

Are there any particularly good stands for the rMBP? Bootcamp gaming is burning the tips of my fingers; I might try elevating it and sliding an external keyboard underneath instead. Edit: an open stand so I can still use the screen, not a vertical stand like the BookArc.

I'm having issues with HDMI on a rMBP - whenever I plug it into my TV, it selects 1080p but always requires the overscan slider to be moved in a fair bit to make the screen fit. It's done this on quite a few TV's that I've seen now.. never noticed with a mini-displayport to DVI adaptor before... what is up with this?

Does your tv have a 1:1 pixel mode? A lot of times its the default for dvi or vga connections but the hdmi ports default to a slightly zoomed in 16:9 mode to ensure any funky video artifacts on the edges are eliminated.

I'm one of the rare people who thinks the 11" is better than the 13". It doesn't seem much smaller spec-sheet wise, and there's a pretty steep cost to battery life, but holy hell is it ever the most portable and useful thing ever. My girlfriend has a 13" and it seems comically enormous to me. I travel everywhere with it, and at home it even acts as my workstation, driving a 23" monitor and hosting a development VM. I was going to get a Mac Mini for home, but honestly, I don't think I need one. Best computer ever.

I love the idea of the 11" but I spent over an hour at an Apple Store trying to compare the two and I couldn't see myself using it as my main computer. It has great design but the 13" was just more comfortable.

Yea, the 11" makes the 13" look like the 15". My only real complaint about the 11" is that you can't plug two monitors into it. But I guess one of those could be a 27" and that's enough room.

Kenny Logins posted:Solution: get a 13" MBA and a new iPad. I don't travel mass transit that much so it's a pretty sweet setup in my experience. Yeah, that makes sense for most people probably. I actually used to have an iPad and ended up selling it - it's hard for me to be productive with it. I really, really hate text entry on it, and find the lack of multitasking a bit hobbling. I ended up only using it as a glorified reddit/SA browser and eBook reader, and eventually found I'd be better served by a Nexus 7 for those needs. I think that's why I'm such a strong advocate of the 11" - it has basically all the portability benefits of the iPad and none of my perceived drawbacks. It's basically the S2000 of computing. Sorry for the car analogy.

I'm new to Macs, and this is a dumb question, but I want to ask anyway just to reassure myself. Western Digital makes a 2TB 2.5" portable hard drive. The Mac version is $219, and the PC version is $165. Is there any difference in these drives, (besides the drive formatting) or is it just charging more for the Mac version because they think Mac users will pay more for the same thing? My mother's USB external hard drive is dying, and this is her Time Machine backup drive. She doesn't use the computer at a desk, just browses on it from the couch. Since her drive is dying, she's going to need to replace it so she doesn't loose her photos and etc. I was showing her the Time Capsule so that she wouldn't be tied down to a USB drive that she has to keep stored under an endtable. However, that's $300 bucks on Apple's site. Is there a wireless NAS that would as a Time Machine drive instead?

I don't know if that case is plastic or actual metal, but that's pretty much the only difference I saw. It was USB3 though, so maybe the Mac usb3 variant is brand new? There is a Mac WD drive that has the metal look and FW800 ports, which would explain a cost difference but that drive is not it.

There's no point: HDD can't come close to saturating thunderbolt and SSDs as used by external drive makers are ludicrously expensive. The best use for thunderbolt right now is the gig-E adaptor.
