14" wheels will clear the regular brakes. Sport brakes are SOL.

I'd just pick up a set of 14x6 off of an NA or a set of daisies.

If it's anything like my RX-7 (spoilers, it is exactly the same), then removing the driven gear at the transmission is going to spew all the gear oil out onto the road through the hole that's left behind. If the speedo cable can be disconnected from the driven gear, however, then that might work.

Thanks for the info - I'll probably just replace it, once I'm ready to take out my cluster. I think I'll do brakes and hubs/bearings first anyway.

Which brings me to the other question from before... Any thoughts on brands/quality for those parts or on installation of rear bearings without a press?

The speedometer cable isn't that hard of a job, honestly. This video shows how to do it pretty well, but I'd recommend having a friend to help you maneuver it behind the engine to the tranny, since it's driver side to passenger side back of transmission. I was able to do it myself, but it required a few attempts and a lot of swearing. I tried spraying some grease on/in it, and it helped for all of the car ride home. It was right back where it was the next day, so I'd just replace it outright.

you should be able to pick up the OEM cable for $80-$95 on ebay.

I know cross drilled rotors are a bit overkill and prone to cracking, but $128 seems like a decent deal for two front rotors and ceramic pads.

I installed the fronts a couple of weeks ago. They stop about as well as the old pads that were on the car when I got it, but are completely silent. I did cover the entire back of the pads with red sticky brake goo, which is hopefully helping with the noise. I haven't done any spirited driving with them on the car, so I can't comment on fade or anything like that.

Oops, didn't realize this was so rare that nobody would recognize it. It's an LPG/autogas conversion, and that's the fuel tank. This fuel is typically cheaper but also has lower energy density so it results in slightly lower performance and higher nominal fuel consumption, though usually now enough to offset the lower prices.

I was going to guess some sort of extended fuel tank, but not that.

I've got some problems with my '99. My trunk has some pretty serious gas smell all the time, and when my tank is nearly full and the car is parked overnight or in high temperatures the cabin will smell like gas also. Are there any common problem spots that would cause this? I know its getting bad because my girlfriend complained the groceries smelled like gas when I got home.

Pull of the carpet on the back wall and a little steel shield on the left side, the tube that takes your gas from the filler to the tank will be there, see if its cracked or damaged. You'd defiantly be able to smell that from the cabin.

(If you have trouble, look at the right rear suspension mount point, the fuel lines are near the hidden left one)

Because I'd bet a very large portion of the Miata's initial and continued success is that it's a sports car that also works drat well as a daily driver?

I understand that, but there are much better platforms if your ultimate goal is fuel conservation. Just seems kinda silly to mod a Miata like that.

They are dead simple to work on, so there is that. But yeah, I don't see the point of putting all of that effort into making a Miata even slower to use a fuel that is not even as efficient.

A VW diesel would have been a cooler swap.

I finally bought a Miata!

Picked up a '91 with hardtop and a ton of spares:
  • 94 transmission
  • Torsen diff
  • Open diff with the right R&P for the final drive
  • 949 racing wheels (plating is coming off) with RS3s
  • Escort GT wheels with studded KW22 winter tires
  • Stock 99 wheels with.. some kind of tire, I forget
  • Loose tires
  • 2 spare tires
  • Kirkey Racing aluminum seat
  • 2 soft tops (original and glass/defroster)
  • Spare steering rack (manual)
  • Axles for the Torsen
  • Racing beat 1.25" FSB
  • Carbotech XP8s
  • Bilstein PSS9s

I'll have some pictures. Anathema though it may be I'm tempted to see if I can repower the depowered stock steering rack and maybe even quiet the custom exhaust down a bit.

Pretty good deal. Now I need to get rid of everything I don't want.

What's the ideal snow tire size for an NA? The rear tires I have now are pretty terrible in the wet, I would hate to see what happens if I had to try and drive in the snow, so I think I'm going to pick up a set of snows with some cheap wheels off of Tire Rack.

Manual rack is slower ratio, that's why everyone depowers the power racks.

It's significantly harder because you're pumping the fluid manually. I tried just disconnecting the belt to see how it felt and it wasn't too bad so I figured I'd remove everything. After I looped the lines around and stripped everything out it was much easier.

I found 2, 2000 model NB's for sale that I'm interested in. One is a "sport" model with 95K miles for $6900, the other is a LS with 83K miles for 6K. Both unfortunately at dealers (more BS, less negotiation room in my experience). Both cars seem to be in really good, unmolested shape with clear titles and carfax histories. Both basically bone stock (at least the $6900 one I looked at yesterday, other car would be a 3+ hour drive to see). Both 5 spds with no obvious defects, the $6900 one even had service records including a timing belt/water pump/tensioner at 80K or so.

NADA says both cars are worth about $7K retail but the LS car has been up for sale since early july so I'm wondering what the REAL value is these days. I know these cars hold value pretty well but I keep seeing the same cars posted on craigslist/autotrader month after month even after some pretty steep asking price drops. I'm guessing the soft economy, upcoming winter and "4 wheeled toy" designation has to have made those NADA estimates a bit dated if the cars aren't selling?

So....what would be a fair offer on either car? I'd be paying with cash. I was tempted to make a lowball offer on the $6900 one but I figured it'll still be there for a while at it's current asking price.

Don't wonder, be blunt. Tell them you are willing to pay $5,000 and you don't think it is worth more than that. Spend an hour negotiating and then leave them your phone number and they will cave. You know they took it on trade and have $3,000 in it.

So my '91 has a few problems so far:
  • Oil pressure gauge seems to always report maximum pressure. Broken sender, bad wiring, or stuck gauge? Leaning towards the latter, as it's always at maximum even when the car is off.
  • Missing the rear hardtop latches (on the B-pillar, not the ones that hold the butt of the roof on)
  • The "doors" mode on the glovebox light doesn't seem to work for drivers' side. Dead door sensor?
  • The ignition cylinder is hard to get the key out of. When I turn it to OFF I have to turn it back to ACC/ON, then push it into the cylinder and turn it. Sometimes I have to wiggle it a bit, and it's not smooth like I figure it should be. Is the key to blame (the door locks also don't seem to like it) or is the cylinder just so old that I should look at replacing it?
The manual mirrors also seem to be pretty stuck and I'm afraid of breaking them. I remember seeing a guide in Practical Classics (or was it GRM?) on how to fix it, so I'll refer to that and see if I can make it a little more comfortable for me to drive.

I giggled for probably five minutes upon finding out the flip-up headlights make a little light illuminate on the dashboard to tell you they're in the process of flipping.

It also has a super loud custom exhaust. What options do I have for quieter aftermarket pieces? I saw the Racing Beat Power Pulse but admittedly haven't done much research. I'm leaning towards getting a used factory take-off and reinstalling it.

And this:

Leading to me selling both my '99 (been meaning to sell it) for $1800 and my '93 Turbo car for $7500. :sigh:

I'll miss you :(

It really boggles my mind that a neighbor calling about a car being 'abandoned' in my own driveway actually gets me tagged for having my cars towed as 'Junk, Inoperable.' Seriously?? I just didn't want to deal with the mess anymore. If I didn't come home for 2 days (happens often) I would have found my vehicles towed to the scrap yard. Really.

On the upside, I still have my yellow one :)
