I got the Bionic OTA update a bit ago, but after the first restart phase of the update it gave me an "update failed" message and isn't doing anything update related. What do I do now? If it matters I had been rooted at one point, but after installing the update that killed root I never messed with it again. Could there be some lingering weirdness from that?

Mine is pending. Even through its 2:30 in the morning it refuses to download due to it thinking its "on peak". Then it starts to download and my data saver kicks in to turn off data because its night time. Oh well.

Does anyone have any sort of tricks for getting your upgrade date bumped up? I'm getting pretty fed up with my Droid 3 since the GPS doesn't work most of the time, I lose 3G a lot just walking around Metro DC, and it lags and stutters all of the time, even doing the most basic of tasks. I took it to the Verizon store around here, and they said there was nothing they can do, and that I'd have to call customer support. I called CS, and basically got no where, despite bringing all of these problems to their attention. I'm due for an upgrade next march, but I'd really like to be done with this phone, and I don't want to shell out full retail prices for a new phone.

Call CS and ask what your current ETF is. That usually kick starts retentions. Though, realize, Verizon at this point literally gives zero fucks so they may not do anything at all. You could always just pick up a pre-owned Galaxy Nexus from Verizon with a 1 year warranty for $230 off contract.

If you pitch a big enough poo poo and explain that you require the phone for your job and this is unacceptable, they will eventually send you a new phone. The chances are good that it will be another Droid 3 though. If you ask them for an early upgrade, they will probably do it, but bear in mind that if you do, you may lose your unlimited data if you accept the upgrade.

Yeah, I don't use my data plan enough to worry about keeping the unlimited data. My wife and I combine for less than 1gb of data per month. Thanks for the info!

Just be polite but firm. Provide them examples of the phone not working properly as well as other phones working fine in the same area. IIRC, the Droid 3 isn't a 4G phone, so if you've got 4G in your area, you can try telling them that you're really wanting to move up to a 4G phone. I did just this and got them to move an upgrade date up 8 months. That wasn't even retentions either, that was the first agent I talked to that got my date moved up.

I explained that I tried their fixes, did a factory wipe of the phone, and nothing worked. Instead of starting over with the Droid 3 after the factory wipe, I asked if I could just upgrade to a new 4G phone and they said no problem. Thanks for all the advice!

Thanks to the guy at the Verizon store finding a nanoSIM, I was able to switch over to the iPhone 5 without a 24h wait while keeping my unlimited data! This is my first experience with LTE, and I'm pleasantly surprised. I was told by Verizon that it wouldn't be available at my home for a while, but since I happen to live right next to a town that has it I get an okay signal from my house! It's nowhere near some of the speeds I've seen posted here (I generally top out at 3 megabytes a second), but it's faster than my home Internet. Has VZW been good about their upgrade schedule? Proper coverage was listed as a couple months away, but I'm not sure if I should expect it to be longer.

Didn't they say they plan on having all current 3g converted to 4g by end of 2013? That'd be pretty awesome. There are a few areas I don't get 4G around here, but not many.

Yes, and at their current rate they'll probably do it far before then. After that, they'll be going after the 1xRTT areas. Remember, this a total conversion for Verizon, everywhere they currently have signal of any kind will eventually be LTE.

Should there be any difference in ordering an iPhone 5 through a corporate store vs vzw's website? Mostly concerned about delivery times as the website is quoting ships by 11/16 and my local stores haven't received any phones since I last posted about the 64 gig models here.

The customer service I've gotten has been awesome too; I've had an instance or two where they've gone way further than they should have without me even asking. The tradeoff is that I've certainly paid way more for that than I did with AT&T.

The ICS update is made to only update phones that are on that version.

And, yes, Verizon is very ahead of schedule in most areas. Funny anecdote: There's a rural tower about 15 miles from my store that was slated to get 4G in August. When they went to climb the tower, however, they discovered an endangered bird species had made a nest in it. Since it's a protected species, Verizon was, and is, forced to wait until the birds migrate south before launching 4G on that tower. (And if I hear another red neck pitch a fit because they think 4G is more important than this bird species, I swear……) SpacedOut fucked around with this message at 00:52 on Oct 27, 2012 |

I'm pretty sure it's higher when I'm in the town that officially has it, but I'm also in southwestern CT which has traditionally had good VZW service. I was mainly comparing against the 56megabit speed tests I saw in either this or the iPhone thread which I've learned is crazy high. The police department in the town my work is based out of had a similar thing. Their huge radio tower has some protected bird's nest right on top which has made maintenance a pain I guess. But yes you can just get foxfi or pay for the official tether plan if you already have unlimited data.

With T-Mobile I paid I think ~$95 a month and paid $122 when I swithced to Verizon. I stuck with T-Mobile for 7 years (even in light of the fact that they don't fully cover the building where I work) because they had good customer service. All in all I've been really pleased with Verizon's service. It's extremely rare that I just don't have a signal whatsoever. Side note, I'm planning to upgrade to the iPhone 5 and when I talked to the customer service rep on the phone, she put me on the Share Everything plan which already includes unlimited minutes and text along with a 2GB data plan. It ended up bringing me back to $95 a month! My question is about tethering since I've seen it come up on this page. I'm a frequent business traveler. I'm usually away from home at least 2 weeks out of the month and I'm in Canada and Mexico quite a bit. Hotel Internet is universally terrible no matter where I am. I'm trying to figure out if MiFi would be a viable option for me to use for my Internet needs. Would the international rates make it not worth it?

Yeah, don't even think about data roaming. I used to commute up to Canada from the states every week and in the one or two instances where I decided fuckit, I need a map right now, it would cost like $6 in data charges to call up a single Google Map. That said the cost of prepaid data/cell service in Canada was enough to make me think twice about even bothering, and just grabbing wifi when I could (my office in Canada had wifi and I would forward my calls to Skype before leaving the US, and usually most restaurants I wound up in offered some kind of free wifi). If you think Americans are getting treated like crap by cell carriers, you would be absolutely shocked to see what goes on north of the border. kitten smoothie fucked around with this message at 15:50 on Oct 28, 2012 |

Okay, so, I recently bought one of those CPO Galaxy Nexus...es. Had a lot of trouble activating it, Backup Assistant wouldn't work, randomly dropped signal, etc. Switched back to my Incredible for the night until I could get to the local Verizon store. They gave me a new SIM card and sent me on my way, and the phone started having the same issues on the way home. Switched back to the Incredible again. Then I read somewhere that 4.1 Jelly Bean might solve some of the issues so I updated the phone and reactivated online. The problem is that activating online chose my old SIM card for me and I didn't notice until after I was done. I've already contacted Verizon again and they're sending a replacement Nexus, but am I going to have to return to the store to get my SIM card switched again or can I switch/activate the new SIM myself, somehow?
