Huh, that's a short demo, there's just one fight and one pointless quest in it, as far as I can see. I can already tell that this is an evolution and not a revolution though. edit: here's a summary for people who couldn't understand it: Chairman Dojima has gone missing in Fukuoka, after getting into a taxi apparently driven by none other than Kiryu himself. Two representatives from the Tojo group confront Kiryu about it, who denies everything. They push the subject and get flattened. Kiryu walks off. The end. I am literally ok with paying $60 every year for more of the same, as long as "the same" never ceases to be amazing, hilarious, and jam-packed full of content. See, unlike the yearly installments of Call of Duty which is six hours of story-based manshoot and a online component that lasts four months, Yakuza never ceases to amaze with the amount of polish and effort that goes into things other than the intricate simulation of utterly ruining the future modeling career of hundreds of underworld mooks. The loving fishing minigame in 4 is better than whatever Cabela's crap is out now, not least because it occasionally provides rewards for the 'punch many faces' part. Even the zombie shooter spinoff Dead Souls barely took itself seriously, and certainly didn't expect the audience to. I still love that stupid game, loving Majima having the time of his life in Kamurocho's zombie season. also, allergy season apparently

Yea Yakuza is a game I don't get mad at 'more of the same' because 'the same' loving rules. Like, obviously I like improvements and variety and all but they have a really solid formula at the base that you could do worse than repeating. Also yea, Dead Souls ruled because they just said 'gently caress it, no one will take this seriously, let's not either' and we got a pretty fun zombie game out of it.

Additionally, CoD has to compete with Battlefield, Medal of Honor, every lovely shovelware military FPS/TPS on the market. The only thing like Yakuza is Yakuza, and maybe Sleeping Dogs.

There are playable demos of Virtua Fighter 2 and Taiko no Tatsujin at the Club Sega. The UFO catcher has Panzer Dragoon dragons. What a tease. The photo booths also work. If you time the pose at the exact time the picture is taken, the picture becomes all sparkly:

There were tons in the southern portion of town. I never had a fight that had less than 4 thugs. Red heat action is triggered by R2 after the heat bar goes into one of the small sections near the end.

I found a hostess bar. I went inside an info place close to Club Sega, chose the first choice two times, and then was escorted to the hostess place. I randomly chose answers with the hostess until I got her "love interest" bar or whatever its called at its maximum. Nothing happened after I left except for getting a big bill. The health bar has two levels: orange and yellow on top of that. You can only get the yellow bar from eating at a restaurant. There is this frustrating game in the arcade next to the UFO catcher. You have to move this stick in the air with the same controls as the UFO catcher, and have it go down a hole on a shelf to get a prize.

Does not having to pay for English voice-acting offset the cost of a larger amount of text to translate? What else could Sega of America localize that would actually sell better?

Armor-Piercing posted:Does not having to pay for English voice-acting offset the cost of a larger amount of text to translate? Voice acting is a pretty big expense, but it's not just the technical costs of localization that are at issue. They have to think about marketing, shipping, box art, use of staff and management's time, etc. Samurai Sanders posted:3 sold enough to bring 4 over, 4 sold enough to bring Dead Souls over, so did Dead Souls sell enough to bring 5 over? Or will they just toss that out and just look at 4's numbers? Sales figures: Yakuza 3: 180,000 in North America, 620,000 in Japan Yakuza 4: 120,000 in North America, 630,000 in Japan Yakuza: Dead Souls: 40,000 in North America, 420,000 in Japan So while there's been a greater consistency in the Japanese market, both NA and Japan had significant drops going into Dead Souls. Yes, the US lost 66% to Japan's 33%, but I think Sega is more likely to base their decision off the Yakuza 3 to Yakuza 4 retail numbers. My guess is we'll see a localization in NA, but probably at least a full year after the Japan release - most likely a limited run. EDIT: By the way, Kenzan only sold 360,000 in Japan and Kurohyou 1 and 2 were 290,000 and 190,000, respectively. Who would've thought that Dead Souls would outperform Kenzan? What concerns me is Sega cutting down on what they localize as well as focusing mainly on downloadable distribution. That's their new business model. C'mon Sega, I bought Dead Souls on release just so we could get this game.

Although I was thinking about Kani Doraku, why do people like product placement in Yakuza vs GTA where people never want to see the GTA universe feel a bit more like a "real" city. From ads for cell phones and drinks to real life restaurants ranging from McDonalds to LA's more upscale restaurant

I'm hoping considering how much work has gone in to improve Yakuza 5, that SEGA will give it a good chance in USA. Of course, they could see that as 'oh that's way too much stuff to translate. pass.'

Jamesman posted:How come Sega of Japan doesn't include an English text during their development, anyway? Because this series, like most in Japan, is made with only the Japanese audience in mind and everything else is an afterthought. Starting with Yakuza 2 every game's been touch and go for overseas release at all. I doubt RGG Studios has any translation or localization staff on the payroll and most likely outsource as much of that process as possible when the time comes. I mean, compare Yakuza to something like Metal Gear, where they did the localization for MGS 2, 3 and 4 (and maybe 1 too, I'm not sure) simultaneously, including voice acting. That was because they include the English voice track as an option for the Asian release and I've read it's more popular than the Japanese VAs. But then that whole series sells better in the US than in Japan and the domestic fans are almost definitely more western-oriented, Hollywood-loving, or military-enthusiast than average. So the English voices are just part of the theme, what with it having pretty much an all western cast and plot. On the other hand, Yakuza is totally Japan-centered and its domestic fans are certain to skew less internationally-minded, and more patriotic. There'd be almost nobody who cared about English being in the game except importers. And no studio actually makes games with importers in mind. EDIT: Jamesman posted:OK you know how there are games that have English text in them that people like to import because they don't get released in the US (or not for a really like time)? I'm asking why Yakuza can't be one of them. Usually those games are either not AAA, or else the publishers were confident at the start of a decent return on investment from a western release. Sometimes their opinion changes once development is well underway and the translation is pretty much done. Egomaniac fucked around with this message at 02:54 on Nov 28, 2012 |
