Captain Shortbus posted:I'm thinking about drinking my bottle of The Dissident tonight. Am I going to be really sad that it's the only bottle of I I was able to get? I'm torn giving you an answer here. On one hand, I'm a firm believer of try it fresh if you're gonna age it. But you only have one, so if you try it now you can't age it. But this year's The Dissident really needs to age before it's good. There's way too much oak and alcohol right now which almost completely covers up the rest of the flavors.

Here's a link to info on the Westy 12 release. There's only a few stores in OH getting it, and I'm really surprised there's no places in Columbus getting it. I will probably line up to get my 6 pack, cause I really don't want to miss out.

I managed to get 1 bottle of this year's Abyss. Apparently only five cases of the stuff went to the entire south Bay Area, which is crazy. Did Deschutes' capacity go way downhill this year? Last years Abyss was all over the place. I was interested to see that it's exactly the same recipe as last year, too.Arnold of Soissons posted:Sort of raises an interesting topic. We've all see beers that try to grab sales through out-there names or bottle art or both. They usually aren't very good beers. But would you ever pass on a beer that was really good, just because it had in incredibly asinine "out there" name? Not just not want to order it at a bar, but fully with hold your business so as to not support such a lovely name / label? I'd be willing to bet that Stone would be nowhere without Arrogant Bastard having such a "catchy" name.

One of the shops on that list said on Facebook that they don't anticipate having to do reservations, lottery, early lineups, etc, that they should have plenty for anyone in the first few days. That seems dubious.

SUPER HASSLER posted:Somewhat annoyed that no Enjoy By seems to have made it up to OR; what's wrong, you guys scared to fight it out against real IPAs? Stone ships each batch of Enjoy By to a limited number of specific markets, and I think Stone's distribution is either all of or most of the 50 states plus several foreign countries. Out of the three batches they've run, I think only two of them have been released in San Diego even and the first two were only like Southern California plus two other cities (not even full states). It was only the 12.21 release that actually seemed to get a wider release. I'm sure it will get there, but unfortunately, not necessarily soon. I thought it tasted a lot like Sculpin, for what its worth. Angry Grimace fucked around with this message at 11:31 on Dec 5, 2012 |

Eccentric Day is this Friday! It's my favorite day of the year. Seriously, even more than Christmas. It's pretty much the most fun, ever. Also, really good beer. They have a pretty nice taplist this year. (e: food doesn't look bad, either) Maybe I can finally try some Black Note? Also curious about the 2007 Third Coast Old Ale. I love that stuff and never manage to keep it around long enough to age it. If anybody wants to awkwardly talk about beer with (a probably somewhat drunken) me, find the gang of Post-Apocalyptic Shriners in Skull Fezzes and I'll be the dude that glows in the dark. See, that's why I love Eccentric Day, I get to type sentences like that and not be full of poo poo at all! nominal fucked around with this message at 15:38 on Dec 5, 2012 |

I think the best is Weilands market, between cook rd and North Broadway. They have a great selection and recently put in a 6 tap growler station that had some pretty interesting stuff. It's also the best bet for rarer stuff. Also, just a block away is Palmers, another bottle shop with a pretty good selection. Those are your best bets and both are very easy to get to from 71. The Giant Eagle near the Hudson ave exit (sort of near campus) is also pretty good. Let me know if you have any other questions. The columbus beer scene is rapidly growing with at least half a dozen breweries set to open in the near future.

No, I chickened out and just drank FBS all night. I picked up a couple of bottles of Cherish Kriek today to hold me over on my sour kick until I can find O'Dell's Friek. The one store I know had some (drove 40 minutes each way) got it in yesterday and was sold out in less than 2 hours. It wasn't a wasted trip, though. They probably had about 90 4-packs of FBS just laying around everywhere. They now have about 85.

I e-mailed Cantillon about the art on Fou Foune. It seems inspired by Le Petit Prince, I asked if this was the case and they responded that it was original. I still think it was heavily inspired from the book and if it is then that's loving awesome.

Beer trip report! So my father in law was visiting from out of town for a few days, and as is typically I reach in my fridge for some good poo poo to drink while he's here. This latest visit I pulled out some stuff that ended up being real winners. The Bruery Smoking Wood Bourbon Been staring at this bottle in my fridge for a while and figured it was time to see what this was all about and I was really blown away. Imperial Smoked Rye Porter might not exactly be the most accurate description as I find this almost bleeds into the Old Ale territory but its probably as close as any "classification" is going to get. The aroma is huge vanilla, wood, bourbon with a bit of bread crust and dark bakers chocolate that all blend together into this really heavenly aroma. Reminds me a bit of Adam from the Wood or aged Bourbon County Stout. The flavor follows through, though its not too sweet and the bitterness is low/moderate but it definitely keeps the sweetness in balance. As it warms the chocolate really comes out along with the low amount of smoke and a healthy amount of rye which lends a spicy character. Medium dry to dry body keeps this from hitting palate fatigue and a very low amount of astringency keeps it very smooth. Overall the beer has a great complexity, flavor integration and most importantly balance. I had no idea I would enjoy this beer so much or I would have tried for another bottle. The next night... Alesmith Barrel Aged Wee Heavy "2009" I've had this one once before about a year ago and had two more left so this one seemed like an obvious choice. I thought it was a great beer a year ago and it has evolved into a really stunning beer since. A big bouquet with bourbon, wood, vanillin, fig, port, toffee, rich malt and a touch of smoke. Its like a big warm blanket of delicious barrel aged beer. Flavor is a lot of the same in the aroma but even though this one is definitely on a bigger bodied, sweeter beer its only 9.5% so its not like you are trying to drink maple syrup or something. Rich with complex malt character, bourbon barrel character and low bitterness while not being too sweet or heavy. The flavors are really rich and complex but really tightly integrated, nothing sticks out too much and everything is really complimentary, its just so nicely put together. I sure am glad I have one bottle of this left.

My friend in Wisconsin finally got around to shipping his side of our bottle trade, and it showed up today. A few days earlier he'd sent me a note- his mom and her friends had accidentally drank some of the stuff that was intended for me, and he promised he'd "make it worth [my] while". Unpacked everything and this is what was inside: There's 2x each of the Enigma and the BCBS as well as the Tyranena bottles. Hey what's that unlabeled bottle doing there? zoom, enhance Well then. I knew he had a couple of these kicking around (his girlfriend lives in the Netherlands and they visited the monastery over the summer), but I never dreamed in a million years that he would toss one my way. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but I think right now I'm leaning towards cracking it open on Christmas morning. I also didn't know he had thrown in the Three Floyds stuff either, I am especially excited to try those. Hell, I'm excited over everything. There's not enough words to adequately convey the level of thrilled I am with this. Suddenly everything I'm sending him pales in comparison.

I really hope not, but that would explain why it's not this far east yet (I'm near dead center between the coasts). I've been trying all around to try and get at least one (preferably three), so I can do a three-year taste test. I've been saving a 2010 and a two 2011s with the intent to be able to do all three every year. With my strange luck finding an extra 2010, I had my hopes up for a four-year next year, but if they cut back production...
