Why would the randomness of the battles have any effect on what you think of the camera in the battles themselves?

Anyway, they aren't random and you're weird for wanting them to be.

They are random because the monsters randomly spawn and run around, and the fact that you can see them coming on the field doesn't make them less random.

And then the field camera is like three feet from my head on the field and I can't see where the battles are coming from means I don't have a good time playing.

Ok but when people refer to "random battles" in JRPGs that's not what they mean and you know it.

Yeah because this seems to be a bizarre chain of misinterpretations, including me misremembering what I meant the first time, compounded by a lengthy delay in the conversation.

What I actually meant, rereading what I said originally, is

a) The camera in Joker 2 is close enough that I had a hard time seeing monsters coming.
b) Therefore, if the camera is so close, I would prefer not having the monsters show up on the field.

That is all.

The knight's just riding it, the slime runs away afterwards, much like a spooked horse.

I'm digging the redesign, though the exploration perspective is a little close for my tastes. Hopefully there will be a variable height camera angle or something. I sure hope it comes out in the U.S.

I warmed up on the Joker 2 camera once I realized it did a good job of making big things feel appropriately big by keeping the camera to a point where it's more or less the perspective of the actual character you're playing. But I'm pretty sure DQ7 doesn't have as many giant screen-filling monsters as Joker 2 did so I'm not sure if I'll like it as much here.

Those apple monsters are really good early on (until they hit their relatively low level cap and become obsolete pretty quickly afterwards).

But by that point you can get Slime Knights, and those are all kinds of awesome.

The world was designed for a high up zoomed out perspective, so unless they redesign the world it will be weird playing it from a closer view.

Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see where this game balances between the spectrum of 'direct port with better graphics' and 'total reimagining ala FFIV DS'. The reputation the game has(crazy long intro, grinding for Jobs, shards being a huge pain in the rear end) means it'd probably be better to be more like the latter in being willing to change things up but who knows how far they're willing to go with that.

They could have very well made it so that you don't look for shards, but they're all given to you upon defeating a boss so you can't miss one. So in the end, you still have shards, but you don't actively have to search every nook and cranny for them. Because ideally, looking through every nook and cranny to find a puzzle piece in order to continue the story in an rpg is asinine and only serves to pad out the story.

So I just decided to start playing the Dragon Quest series for the first time despite being a life long RPG fan. I was aware of Dragon Warrior back in the day but never had the opportunity to play it so I was always a Final Fantasy fan. But Final Fantasy sucks now and it looks like Dragon Quest is everything I always wanted Final Fantasy to be. Starting with IV, but looking forward to working my way up through whichever ones I can play on my 3DS. I can't believe it took me this long to try it out.

Haha, you got me there. But sometimes you'll miss something and then you have to look through every nook a second or third or fourth time. It's a tedious affair that has no place in a traditional rpg.

The "break all pots" activity in Dragon Quest games was nothing but a warm-up for what they did in Blue Dragon. Not only can you search drat near every single loving thing, but they almost always have a couple gold or some cheap item instead of nothing, while a few here and there will give something useful (not that finding thousands of gold over time isn't handy).

You should start with 3 but unless you find a ROM your only options would be NES or GBC.

Give everyone Thunder Thrust and get all the +agility/deftness you can. Faster classes will end up going before them.

Is it really so terrible to start with 4? I thought the stories weren't connected between 3 and 4. Either way, I'm about 10 hours in so I don't see myself starting over with 3 right now.

They're not connected. 4-6 is the Zenithian trilogy, but there really isn't much of a connection between them, other than general themes. 3 is just a really solid game, though.

Dragon Quest 7 is the first game I ever went and looked up in a walk through because of some of those drat shards. The Suikoden games only reinforced the habit because stumbling around to find vague people (Clive ) was just as bad at times. DQ7 giving hints for where the next shard is sounds like a good change.

Been playing through DQ7 for the first time the last few days, currently up to Dharma Temple. (More accurately, messing around in the Casino there). I like it, even though the pacing is glacial, and the developers expected everyone who played to be psychic. Feels pretty easy by DQ standards, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Then you just quad hit and explodet the gently caress out of everything while working the first two up as paladins to become Godhands. :hellyeah::black101:

There's now a Shard Radar on the bottom screen's mini map. It glows as you get closer to shards, and if you're close enough for the shard's location to appear on the bottom screen's minimap the location of the shard will actually be marked for you. Life keeps getting more convenient.
