The TNG cast was actually asked about that possibility on the TNG Season 2 Blu-ray interview session, and they're not too keen on it

I think Shatner was miffed at not even getting a torch-passing cameo while Nimoy got a major role.

I think there was that extended scene filmed where Nero's people mention something about Kirk, but it was cut

I think he was supposed to give a cameo in the form of a recorded message given to Pine-Kirk by Spock. God that would have been awesome

The scene was written and Abrams wanted to shoot it, but Shatner demanded that his role be as big as Nimoy's, so it got scrapped.

They should've just let Shatner do the "these are the voyages" voiceover. It's a little sad that he's not included at all.

I believe Orci or Kurtzman confirmed that the recording of Shatner-Kirk was actually supposed to transition into him doing the "these are the voyages" narration. But, again, after Shatner refused to do the gig, they switched it to Nimoy.

They should've given the narration to George Takei. It would be nice if they gave him a cameo or something in the new one because he's such a nice guy. But I guess we'd know about it by now if he had one.

Nah, the first movie was the brief window of opportunity for having classic cameos. Anything from here on out would just be distracting fanservice and muddle up the continuity, too.

I can see a reboot of TNG happening with a new actor playing a young Picard. We've already seen episodes of TNG with a young version of Picard anyways. Hell, you could still have Stewart play Picard. Dude has barely aged after 25 years. Of you could get the guy from x-men first class I guess.

A part of wished they had a silent Patrick Stewart cameo in the Spock-Prime's mindmeld in the last movie. But at this point, there's no need for more cameos. Having Nimoy back for Into Darkness is already a questionable move. I wonder how much memories New Kirk got from Old Spock in that mindmeld. I'm guessing they probably won't address it. I thought mind melds like that share the memories and emotions, but like a dream the details fade away quickly. Or maybe I read this in some novel or something when I was younger. I have a feeling that is likely.

I think having Shatner on-screen would have taken everything out of Pine's work on the film. Nimoy was much more important, I thought. Quinto and Nimoy really got to know each other during production, which I'm sure helped Quinto form his version of Spock.
