Hey Arnold was such a great show. The fact that the second movie never got made still makes me a little sad inside and the first movie was a gigantic disappointment. They hyped up the thing about Arnold and Helga in the trailers to no end and then when you watched the actual movie Helga just dismisses it as being in the heat of the moment. That and the movie plot itself sounds like it should have just been an episode of the TV show, two parter or not. Also, the episode where Arnold's grandpa talks about basically killing Hitler was pretty great. I do remember enjoying the earlier episodes though but I always found the adults to be more entertaining then the kids most of the time. That they didn't have any safe adults they could turn to or confide in also made me uneasy, because it meant that they had nowhere to hide from the Gromble and his cronies. I think I actually like the show better as an adult than I did as a child.

Nick decided to give it a theatrical release after the success of the Rugrats movies. The second movie that never got made was actually being created with a theatrical release in mind.

I always liked that Real Monsters had Gregg Berger as the Gromble. He's the guy who played Cornfed in Duckman, and it looks like he mostly gets those low gravelly-voiced roles (like Cutthroat Bill in Curse of Monkey Island, Grimlock in Transformers, etc). But when he was the Gromble we got to hear him jumping way up and down his whole range, which was hilarious.

So on a whim I decided to try and watch that Kaijudo: Rise Of The Duel Masters show, expecting it to be so bad that it's funny. Kind of like the NFL RUSHZONE cartoon. (It's awful.) Turns out it's actually surprisingly enjoyable. The character designs are pretty bad, but the monster designs are good, and the animation is good when it counts. The story is an odd hodgepodge of pretty much every anime/monster cliche and trope from the past 20 years. Weird hair colors, bullied at school, has weird natural talent for mana, draws monsters, etc. Main character is racially bullied for being half Asian, which is interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyyqdzKrSHo&feature=player_detailpage#t=390s Not sure if I've seen growing up biracial tackled as a subject in a kids show. Overall, I'd say it's entirely watchable. Definitely better than the Magi Nation cartoon they tried to make a few years ago. Its decently executed and reminds me of the shows I used to watch growing up. If you liked Digimon/Pokemon or any other companion creature type shows then you'll probably at least tangentially enjoy Kaijudo. (I don't really like Gabriel though. Fat soft spoken nerd is a cliche that I could stand to never see again. Maybe he'll grow up as it goes on.)

Speaking of Digimon, that DVD set they released a while back is really good. Not much in the way of extras (why is the Japanese theme music lyrics an extra?) but the video quality is nice and the show still kind of holds up, although the dub dialogue has a fair share of ridiculous lines.

To be fair, they toned them way down when it mattered. Sure they were still there (The Ultimate Evil comes with both Hot and Cold watter, don't you know?) but it wasn't a groansome as when Etemon was a thing. Only show I know of that didn't make an utter hash of adoption as a plot line.

Anyone remember the one thread topic in GBS pretty much about how dumb the Villains in Captain Planet were? I recall having a discussion with my econ. prof who's about 5-10 years older than me about it, and how stupid some of their motivations were, and how it didn't make logical sense from a business standpoint.

If you had to rank all of the Captain Planet villains on a scale for intelligence and competence, I'd definitely place Hoggish Greedly and that yellow radioactive guy towards the bottom. Dr Blythe would be near the top of the list.

Captain Planet also had really crazy episodes about the Palestine-Israel and Ireland conflicts, not to mention one about AIDS. Pretty ballsy, but they deserve to be done in better shows.

The character of Verminous Skumm from Captain Planet actually had some truly evil schemes. There was an episode where he placed nuclear bombs right in the middle of racially feuding nations. Yeah, it was a MacGuffin for talking about differences, but for a global terrorist trying to cause confusion and violence, Verminous had it down. He's also one of the few cartoon villains that's actually killed a character as when he got Linka's cousin hooked on a drug that caused him to die. Though I'll admit to the show being a blatant vehicle for environmental and cultural issue, Captain Planet still had a handful of truly dark episodes.

I think that anti-Gaia character was involved. Those episodes tended to be weird.
