I didn't see it on anybody's list but November's Doom released a new, great album, Aphotic. They're a doom metal band from Downers Grove, Illinois, a town close to where I grew up. If you have a craving for good musicianship and good vocals that mix harmonizing and growling then you should certainly add them to your playlist.

I just received my copy of the self-titled debut EP of Civil War, a new band of a couple ex-Sabaton guys with Nils Patrik Johansson (Astral Doors, Wuthering Heights) as the singer. You can definitely hear the Sabaton influences, but it's certainly not a knock-off or anything. Pretty drat solid stuff really. Moreover, I just can't get enough of Johansson's voice, it's just so loving powerful and oozing charisma. At times he sounds startlingly lot like Dio, too. Really, this guy is the best classic heavy metal vocalist around today, no question. Jörn Lande? Pfah, get bent. I hope these guys will be putting out a full album soon, I keep looping this EP and it sounds better with every spin. (except for the wholly uninteresting Nelly Furtado cover in the end.)

Has anyone heard the new Alice in Chains single that came out last week? I rather like it, and the video has a really cool 'Moon' meets '2011 space odyssey' vibe going on.

Speedwolf are pretty good - not great - but I was more or less sold on them before I ever even heard a note just because of that art.

Well today is supposed to be the day we can buy Joel Grind's Yellowgoat album in mp3 format but I'll be hosed if I can find where. I only see links to preorder the vinyl. Anyone know where you can buy this?

Friend of mine has a spare ticket for Dethfest, just hoping I land my new job so I can easily afford the ticket and plane ride down. This Joel Grind is some good loving poo poo. I feel like ive shifted my tastes towards stuff like this recently, "black n roll". I can barely stand the old "viking metal" tracks and epic stuff like the new Wintersun album which I was loving bored of within minutes. This stuff just seems right. Fast, heavy and just loving incredible.
