Payroll taxes and Income taxes are now exactly where they were when Obama took office in 2009 for anyone who makes less than $250K. Thanks, massive tax increase of 0%! People over $250k pay a slightly higher Medicare payroll tax now, and people over $450k pay more on income and capital gains, too.

So he's mad the temporary tax cut Obama put in place as a small stimulus measure is gone, in no small part because Republicans opposed it at every step? Does this mean he was going to vote for the party that never wanted the payroll tax cut period?

And the increase came from the fact that Social Security would be insolvent if left at that rate. Of course, another option to keep it solvent was to raise the cap at which people have to pay in.

But we wouldn't want that, would we?

Absolutely. Self awareness should be something we strive for considering how much we like to pride ourselves on having it over the other guys. I was particularly amused, however, when I saw the "1-20-2013" stickers, sometimes subtitled "End of an error," that popped up aping the Bush's last day ones. Conservatives were so busy trying to turn around a joke on liberals that they forgot to consider that Bush's last day was the end of his second term and he couldn't be reelected, while Obama had a very real chance of a second term.

Only from the stand point of the Bush tax cut expiration. Obamacare introduced new taxes on couples earning more than $250K.

A 0.9% Medicare Payroll tax increase (The Medicare portion of FICA is not effected by the income cap); and a 3.8% Healthcare tax on investment income. Both of these went into effect this year, so if you make $300,000 then your taxes really have increased, as opposed to returning to Bush-levels like it did for most people.

Anyway, after our call I tried to verify the basis of this 401k change in Obamacare and I haven't found a drat thing. Anyone know anything about this? Sorry about the lack of details, this is all I could get out of him.

Perhaps he was confused about the new tax on investment income. However, 401k's are taxed when you withdraw the money from them, and those withdrawls are taxed as ordinary income; so they wouldn't be subject to the new 3.8% tax that I mentioned above.

quote:

In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by Fox News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.

Back in December of 1996, Jane Akre and her husband, Steve Wilson, were hired by Fox as a part of the Fox "Investigators" team at WTVT in Tampa Bay, Florida. In 1997, the team began work on a story about bovine growth hormone (BGH), a controversial substance manufactured by Monsanto Corporation. The couple produced a four-part series revealing that there were many health risks related to BGH and that Florida supermarket chains did little to avoid selling milk from cows treated with the hormone, despite assuring customers otherwise.

According to Akre and Wilson, the station was initially very excited about the series. But within a week, Fox executives and their attorneys wanted the reporters to use statements from Monsanto representatives that the reporters knew were false and to make other revisions to the story that were in direct conflict with the facts. Fox editors then tried to force Akre and Wilson to continue to produce the distorted story. When they refused and threatened to report Fox's actions to the FCC, they were both fired (a 1997 Best-Censored story).

Akre and Wilson sued the Fox station and on August 18, 2000, a Florida jury unanimously decided that Akre was wrongfully fired by Fox Television when she refused to broadcast (in the jury's words) "a false, distorted, or slanted story" about the widespread use of BGH in dairy cows. They further maintained that she deserved protection under Florida's whistleblower law. Akre was awarded a $425,000 settlement. Inexplicably, however, the court declined that Steve Wilson, her partner in the case, was ruled not wronged by the same actions taken by Fox.

Fox appealed the case, and on February 14,2003 the Florida Second District Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the settlement awarded to Akre. The Court held that Akre's threat to report the station's actions to the FCC did not deserve protection under Florida's whistleblower statute, because Florida's whistle-blower law states that an employer must violate an adopted law, rule, or regulation." In a stunningly narrow interpretation of FCC rules, the Florida Appeals court claimed that the FCC policy against falsification of the news does not rise to the level of a "law, rule, or regulation"; it was simply a policy. Therefore, it is up to the station whether or not it wants to report honestly.

During their appeal, Fox asserted that there that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on the public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre's claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story; they simply maintained that it was their right to do so. After the appeal verdict, WTVT general manager Bob Linger commented. It's vindication for WTVT, and we re very pleased ... It's the case we've been making for two years. She never had a legal claim."

Under Bush gas hit over $4 a gallon, and is now $3.26; so by my two data point graph gas prices are going down thanks to Obama! It's almost as if using two data points from a data set with large fluctuations is a bad idea and highly misleading. I mean, it's not like $1.84 a gallon was some kind of Recession driven aberration, right?

quote:

Unemployment rate 1/20/2009: 7.8%
Unemployment rate 1/20/2013: 7.8%

Same as above. By taking only the two data points you completely fail to grasp the point that Unemployment skyrocketed in 2009 and has been declining for the last three years. It's not like it's just been a straight line from 2009 to 2013.

quote:

Estimated welfare spending as of 1/20/2009: $563 billion
Estimated welfare spending as of 1/20/2013: $1.03 trillion

I don't even know where to start with this one, it makes no sense. TANF (welfare) provided less than $10B in cash assitance in 2011. Even if you add in SNAP (Food Stamps), that's only another $78B. Throw in Unemployment, ignoring that it's a government run insurance program, and you get another $150B in 2011. But if you lump in things like Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, you fly way past the $1T mark. So I have no idea how they're measuring this, at all. But it strikes me as if it's designed to make it seem like we're paying more in Welfare (TANF) than we really are. It makes it look like we're paying out a $1T in welfare checks, when it's not even remotely close to that. Everything about this stat reeks of bullshit.

quote:

Number of Americans on food stamps 1/20/2009: 34 million

Yes, this is how social programs are MEANT to work during economic downturns.

quote:

~15% over 4 years isn't really that bad compared to how they've been increasing. Oh, was this supposed to be a slam about Obamacare programs and regulations that haven't even started yet?

quote:

Median household income in America adjusted for inflation 1/20/2009: $52,195
Median household income in America adjusted for inflation 1/20/2013: $50,054

Another case of taking two data points in order to ignore what happened in between them. Median income dropped sharply due to the recession but has been on the increase.

quote:

Number of American soldiers killed in Afghanistan as of 1/20/2009: 630
Number of American soldiers killed in Afghanistan as of 1/20/2013: 1324

I would love to hear more about how much you oppose the War in Afghanistan. Also, do you know how many American soldiers died in Iraq in 2012? As far as I can find, it was a single, non-hostile, death.

quote:

US national debt as of 1/20/2009: $10 trillion
US national debt as of 1/20/2013: $16.4 trillion

Yep, and was caused almost entirely by policies implement by Republicans under Bush and then a Recession which drastically slashed tax revenues and increased need for Food Stamps, Unemployment, and other social programs.

quote:

Social Security income/deficits as of 1/20/2009: SURPLUS of roughly $4 billion
Social Security income/deficits as of 1/20/2013: DEFICIT of roughly $20 billion

Which is part of why the payroll tax cut ended. But again, you have a down economy shrinking revenue, and the same economy is also driving more people onto SS early, and also a large increase in the number of people on disability since employers don't usually hire people with disabilities when they've got 20 other applicants with no disability.

quote:

Lastly, the number of Americans age 16 or older who decided not to work or even to seek a job increased by 8,332,000 to a record 88,839,000 in President Barack Obama’s first term, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This number is pretty much always increasing, since people are retiring faster than they're dying. And it even points out that half the number is exactly that: people who retired. Then you have people going back to school because of the downturn, or families deciding to live off of only a single income, people who are disabled, etc. As for the rest, we could have given them jobs, but that costs money. And the Free Market is so much more effective at dealing with these people: leave them to rot.
