you cant handle it right there is what im saying. that's why you throw it.

and yes I would prefer a combination of more specific sqlexception types combined with enums for detailed typing. gently caress integer error codes. you obviously probably cant do a specific exception for every sql error, but you absolutely could have exceptions for the most common errors and then more generic exceptions for groups of errors.

like do this: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/sql/SQLException.html
instead of this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlexception.aspx

its just loving dumb that Microsoft cant have some code based mechanism for telling you what the exception means without you having to google an integer.

Too bad Java's SQLException is still poo poo because drivers haven't been updated to support new fancy pants child classes of SQLException so it still uses those god drat integer return codes everywhere.

I know you are going to cry open sores, but the fact remains that Java got it wrong first and C# copied it.

So I just realised Maven can be used to set up a build goal that will download an embedded version of Tomcat, configure it, deploy your webapp into it, download and add a bunch of runtime dependencies to the classpath (independent of all that stuff that may or may not get packaged into the WAR itself), and set up all the JDBC connections and stuff. And this isn't even something that's particularly difficult to do or unusual.

End result, I deleted this gigantic manuscript from my project's quickstart guide about how to get all of Eclipse's ducks in a row to host all this poo poo and replaced it with two lines:

mvn sql:execute -pl buttstore-db
mvn tomcat7:run -am -pl buttstore-web

Current Maven status: owns loving bones

enjoy england, it's ok to visit every now and again. i'm probably going next week to get drunk.

flying to where I am from where you'll be only costs ~300 USD return. meanwhile taking a train from where I am to london costs ~160 USD.

meanwhile, in 20 days I will be in san francisco for a month :q:
