But, hey, England is the dominant naval power, needing only to grab Gibraltar and a few coastal territories to entrench its rule of the waves, so perhaps it’s best to let the two bleed each other dry. Wait, Britain doesn't start with Gibraltar?

Given this:RPS posted:The problem was this: March of the Eagles looks like a Paradox grand strategy game, it has been designed by the folks who make Paradox grand strategy games, but it’s a wargame. There are many choices to be made, some of which seem political or progressive, but they all serve one purpose – the recruitment of men (and horses), the picking of fights and the execution of large scale strategic manoeuvres. and the fact that I have a distaste for multiplayer, I think MoE will, like Sengoku, be one of the very rare Paradox games I skip entirely. I'd rather see something like Victoria, but spanning 1750 - 1901 or something like that. Skipping WW1, and focusing in instead on an opening game of colonial rebellions, dynamic rebellions for liberty in Europe, and a such. Then Hearts of Iron would be 1901 - 2001 and span the fall of the Victorian world, the rise of communism and fascism and a dynamic Cold War. /if I made Paradox games. I know that there were no Zoroastrian Conquests or anything monumental like that but I'm hoping for some fun events and religion mechanics to make it interesting. Also, quote:I mean, you’ve got the Khazars out on the steppes, which I’ve read were actually Jews, essentially. But we decided not to add another religion again, because then we get sucked into giving them cool mechanics. And we felt, we’ll just make them pagan—Tengri pagan Overall I'm still really positive about this DLC and would preorder it at the first chance. I'm just a bit upset my favourite pagans are getting the least love and Tengri Khazars .

King seemed to not really know everything he was talking about. There was a lot of I-think-sos and maybes, with a healthy dose of "You'd have to ask this other guy." From the announcement and dev posts on the forum, it sounded like they were wanting to do some cool stuff with Zoroastrians. Maybe that will only turn out to be a couple events. Or maybe King is way too poorly informed to make for a good interview subject. It's probably a little bit of both.

The Khazars, by 867 had a Jewish Khagan, a partially-Judaized partially-Tengriist ruling class, and a mostly-Tengriist common population remarkably accepting of Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, which doesn't strike me as that hard to model in a character-driven game like CK2. A Jewish ruler whose vassals are ~50/50 Tengriist and Jewish and whose provinces are Tengriist faith.

Yeah, I'm hoping for a lot of cool Zoroastrian stuff, that religion's always fascinated me. Does anyone know what the state of Persia in 867 was? A brief glance at Wiki says that it wasn't until the tenth century that Islam really replaced Zoroastrianism and that in most (but not all) parts of Iran Z's were basically allowed to live in peace as long as they paid the jizya, so hopefully that means there will be a lot of Z characters to choose from. Basically I want to be like one of the retarded Byzantophiles on the P-dox forums, except with the Sassanid Empire instead.

What I mean by alt. history tee hee is that everybody is making hilariously biased facts (People with Soviet Union flags especially) talking about how the US should have detailed collapse and civil war events, the USSR only broke up because of capitalists financing uprisings, that there was no real ethnic issues in the USSR, and people focusing on if Germany won a bit to early, I don't mind the last one but Jesus there are a few misguided communists on that forum.

There was no ethnic problems for the USSR." which is just boring to have a super stable giant and inaccurate.

The nobility was almost all Muslim. There were too many connections to be made from being Muslim that the nobility converted almost immediately. The nobility who didn't were mostly connected to the priest structure. What Wiki seems to be saying is the populace stayed mostly Zoroastrian. CK2 models only the nobility so it'd still be a more rare event to have a Zoroastrian noble.

quote:Are there any changes being made to model the nomadic people who were around at that time? There was a lot of migration going on, a lot of tribes that just up and left where they were between 867 and 1066. It wasn’t just an issue of conquering more stuff, they left the old lands behind. Interesting to see that Paradox has been having essentially the same discussion this thread did. (The Hungarian Problem being essentially the Migration Period problem writ small.) I'm very excited to see what they do to solve it! The Hungarians, "Scourge of Europe, ravaging from Poland to Spain!" has always been an appealing image to me, because it's so incongruous in context of their later history. (It's especially an amusing contrast to the Hungarian lords huddled in their castles as the Mongols pillage their lands.)

Like the old Crisis in the Kremlin game. And for me, that doesn't really appeal at all - for it to be a decent game at all, either side should have a decent shot at winning. That does imply that there should be events for an American collapse. Outside of war, an Eastern Bloc victory would probably involve placating China to keep them on-board, lightening your grip on Hungary, Czechoslovakia, etc., and somehow driving the United States back into isolation, or even bringing sympathetic elements to power. Honestly, half the reason I want this game to work out is so the Kaiserreich team looks into it. I want a Mitteleuropa-International Cold War, dammit!

Hopefully the simulation is flexible enough to allow economic routes to victory.

Well I used to read Harry Turtledove books, they don't all have to do with the world wars (some involve the US Civil War for instance ) and they're not really 'good' but can be entertaining. For instance, How Few Remain is about a second war between the CSA and the US in the 1880s that involves disgraced former president Lincoln becoming a socialist, Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders invading Canada, and awkward Mark Twain sex scenes. I've also read a short story once where JFK survived the assassination attempt and lived for a few more decades as a mentally damaged manchild, which was a thing. "If X won $BIG_WAR" is a good starting point for most alt-history because of how easy it is to radically change the political, economic, religious, cultural, etc. map of the world by having one nation win a war against another. In particular a lot of alt-historical fiction I've noticed is about "What if Germany won WWII" which is just the most played out topic for me so a simple scenario like that for EvW would be boring to me but Kaiserreich as I understand has more to it than that so I may look at the Kaiserreich alt scenario. The Years of Rice and Salt is a book that sort of does things different, in it the Black Plague kills so much of Europe's population that the mainland becomes a no man's land and India, the Middle East, and Eastern Asia rise to world powers instead of Europeans. burnishedfume fucked around with this message at 07:13 on Feb 6, 2013 |
