That's pretty cool, hope they can balance it a bit, though, so losing doesn't become the best way to win.

From the same link, I just now noticed:

It's kinda blurry since RPS decided to use a really small screenshot but goddamn, leader portraits are in the game! Hopefully those make their way into EUIV as well. I'm a sucker for pointless little details like that.

Wait, Britain doesn't start with Gibraltar?

The problem was this: March of the Eagles looks like a Paradox grand strategy game, it has been designed by the folks who make Paradox grand strategy games, but it’s a wargame. There are many choices to be made, some of which seem political or progressive, but they all serve one purpose – the recruitment of men (and horses), the picking of fights and the execution of large scale strategic manoeuvres.

My greatest pleasure is in the avoidance of war, whether by establishing myself as a useful trading partner or by stabbing those who would fight with my nation before the fight can begin. March of the Eagles does not care for men like me. It’s a compact version of Paradox’ usual fare, spanning decades rather than centuries, and that is in keeping with its focus on war. Despite that, this take on the Napoleonic Wars doesn’t have the complexity of Hearts of Iron, and the experience is much more like a stripped back Europa Universalis than a simulation of warfare.

and the fact that I have a distaste for multiplayer, I think MoE will, like Sengoku, be one of the very rare Paradox games I skip entirely.

I'd rather see something like Victoria, but spanning 1750 - 1901 or something like that. Skipping WW1, and focusing in instead on an opening game of colonial rebellions, dynamic rebellions for liberty in Europe, and a such. Then Hearts of Iron would be 1901 - 2001 and span the fall of the Victorian world, the rise of communism and fascism and a dynamic Cold War.

Well, we’ll see about that. There’s not many Zoroastrian rulers kicking about. So it’s down on our list. But we know our fans like the Zoroastrians. So we’ll see what we can do for them.

:ohdear: I'm personally far more interested in Zoroastrian than Norse pagans so it kinda sucks to hear they're low on the list. I know that there were no Zoroastrian Conquests or anything monumental like that but I'm hoping for some fun events and religion mechanics to make it interesting. Also,

I mean, you’ve got the Khazars out on the steppes, which I’ve read were actually Jews, essentially. But we decided not to add another religion again, because then we get sucked into giving them cool mechanics. And we felt, we’ll just make them pagan—Tengri pagan

A "Fatherland" mod at least has the decency to be based on a novel that features a cold war between the United States (Which defeated Japan and is propping up what's left of the Soviet Union) and Nazi-occupied Europe, rather then someone going all Philip K. Dick on their own.

King seemed to not really know everything he was talking about. There was a lot of I-think-sos and maybes, with a healthy dose of "You'd have to ask this other guy."

From the announcement and dev posts on the forum, it sounded like they were wanting to do some cool stuff with Zoroastrians. Maybe that will only turn out to be a couple events. Or maybe King is way too poorly informed to make for a good interview subject. It's probably a little bit of both.

The nobility was almost all Muslim. There were too many connections to be made from being Muslim that the nobility converted almost immediately. The nobility who didn't were mostly connected to the priest structure. What Wiki seems to be saying is the populace stayed mostly Zoroastrian. CK2 models only the nobility so it'd still be a more rare event to have a Zoroastrian noble.

Yeah, the prospect I worry about with EvW is that it will be too deterministic, with the Soviet Union doomed either to collapse or to 'reform' into liberal democratic capitalism. Like the old Crisis in the Kremlin game. And for me, that doesn't really appeal at all - for it to be a decent game at all, either side should have a decent shot at winning. That does imply that there should be events for an American collapse.

Are there any changes being made to model the nomadic people who were around at that time? There was a lot of migration going on, a lot of tribes that just up and left where they were between 867 and 1066. It wasn’t just an issue of conquering more stuff, they left the old lands behind.

That’s something, obviously. We call it “The Hungarian Question.” Which is, “How do we get the Hungarians from their home right now, in Western Ukraine, into Hungary?” So it’s something that we know about, and we’re probably going to do a bit of iteration, and trial and error, on that one. We definitely want nomads to move.

Interesting to see that Paradox has been having essentially the same discussion this thread did. (The Hungarian Problem being essentially the Migration Period problem writ small.) I'm very excited to see what they do to solve it! The Hungarians, "Scourge of Europe, ravaging from Poland to Spain!" has always been an appealing image to me, because it's so incongruous in context of their later history. (It's especially an amusing contrast to the Hungarian lords huddled in their castles as the Mongols pillage their lands.)

Outside of war, an Eastern Bloc victory would probably involve placating China to keep them on-board, lightening your grip on Hungary, Czechoslovakia, etc., and somehow driving the United States back into isolation, or even bringing sympathetic elements to power.

I'd imagine if the Soviets would have established a firm grip on the Middle East, avoided invasions of, say, Afghanistan, and didn't pour money out of the civilian sector into the military one they could have very easily avoided a collapse if not eventually emerged as the victors of the Cold War. Hopefully the simulation is flexible enough to allow economic routes to victory.

Well I used to read Harry Turtledove books, they don't all have to do with the world wars (some involve the US Civil War for instance ) and they're not really 'good' but can be entertaining. For instance, How Few Remain is about a second war between the CSA and the US in the 1880s that involves disgraced former president Lincoln becoming a socialist, Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders invading Canada, and awkward Mark Twain sex scenes.

I've also read a short story once where JFK survived the assassination attempt and lived for a few more decades as a mentally damaged manchild, which was a thing.

"If X won $BIG_WAR" is a good starting point for most alt-history because of how easy it is to radically change the political, economic, religious, cultural, etc. map of the world by having one nation win a war against another. In particular a lot of alt-historical fiction I've noticed is about "What if Germany won WWII" which is just the most played out topic for me so a simple scenario like that for EvW would be boring to me but Kaiserreich as I understand has more to it than that so I may look at the Kaiserreich alt scenario.

The Years of Rice and Salt is a book that sort of does things different, in it the Black Plague kills so much of Europe's population that the mainland becomes a no man's land and India, the Middle East, and Eastern Asia rise to world powers instead of Europeans.
