And now the justice minister of lower saxony got caught drunk-driving. His last feat of note? Attempting to champion legislation that would change the legal blood alcohol limit from .05% to .03%. What's next? Schröder getting busted for adultery and criminal neglect and endangerment of a child?

That's alright, the alcohol limit is a money grabbing farce. Everyone who actually crashes is so far above the limit you wonder if there's actually blood in his body.

Everyone losing a PhD had it from before Bologna, so in many ways a part of the issue is that people back then would let poo poo slide depending on how much education people had beforehand, Bundesland policy and whatever else. It's also telling that a lot of the people losing them are conservative, because it seems like titles are more important on this side, esepcially with the older voters. Also, nothing owns like living in Berlin and working for a member of the CDU who is from BW. I also live in Prenzlberg. I am probably among the 1% worst people in this city in the mind of some idiot hipster (foreigner, working for conservatives, contributing to gentrification, not really caring about what is super hip right now).

To be entirely fair, the quotation styles differ significantly between the sciences. The committee that busted Shavan didn't have one from her field, which strikes me as fairly odd to be perfectly honest. Not saying that she didn't do anything wrong, but "you quoted that wrong" (as opposed to "you didn't say that it was a quote at all") is a bit problematic.

Schavan was social sciences, so that's entirely different as well, especially from a natural science. The thing is, social sciences are mostly pure rehashing at a lower level (bachelors), where you just take someone else's idea and re-argue it with your own research, with coming up with new ideas being reserved for doctorate and postdoc guys only (even then, putting out a new idea on a doctoral thesis is really loving hard because of the amonut of research being done currently).

Why do you all have to be such dicks to poor fox news? I´m sure it was not meant to be a "factional®" statement. I also want to remind everyone of our great heroes in the bavarian police force. Seven of them were viciously attacked this week by a tiny 23 year old woman(who was handcuffed, restrained and in a police cell at that time) and had to beat her to a pulp in self-defense. As far as disciplinary actions are concerned, I´m sure everything is on the table, from promotions for everyone to a week of unpaid leave. Hurray! "Der Beamte ist ausgetickt"

Just back from skiing in Germany, it was fun. Two points: they should build a tunnel between the Netherlands and Austria to help unclog everything around Munich, the traffic is insane even on Saturday (all day). Second: German minister Annette Schavan quits over 'plagiarism' quote:"I think today is the right day to leave my ministerial post and to concentrate on my duties as a member of parliament," the 57-year-old said. Several politicians in the Czech Republic got into similar trouble over their academic credentials (in fact, one of the "prestigious" law schools was graduating students in 2-3 months), but I don't think anyone resigned yet.

Munich traffic is notoriously hellish on Saturday. It's generally regarded as a bad idea to attempt to enter the city by car, since it's the day when everyone has off and goes shopping. The problem is compounded by the fact that all stores close at 20.00 on weekdays.

Hey, does anyone here know anything about the control of water and water ecosystems in Germany? Like I know in France there is a centralized group known as the "water Police" that supervise water resources, but do we have any central office like that here?

Yeah I know they should have gotten another job/other jobs require workinghours like that as well. Blah blah blah. Years ago only one day of the week was open til 20:00 and Saturday was usually till 12:00. Guess what, society functioned quite well back then too. I hate this "I want this, and I want it right NOW" mentality. Before I went to university I managed the support desk in a computer retailer in a mall in Germany, and I have to say when the opening hours legislation was relaxed and we started keeping the store open to 2200 (2400 towards christmas) those were the nicest shifts to work for me (and all our other employees). Outside a few very hectic pre-christmas weekends you had a lot less customers, more time to prep for closing the shop without having to juggle a full store, and it also meant that you only went into work at 1400/1600 and had the whole morning/midday off to do all the things that as a regular working person you usually have to do weekends only (or take a day off for). Keep in mind, that you are still home early enough to get a regular amount of sleep during nighttime (unless you are a person that for some reason goes to bed at 2100). However, this only worked out for us because we weren't forced to cover the additional hours with the same workforce and longer shifts. That's what makes the real difference. Were I live right now in bumfuck nowhere, we have like 3 big supermarkets that have long opening hours. A kaufland where the same couple desperate workers have to staff from 0900 to 2300, managing chashier lines at the same time as mopping floors and stocking shelves, a Globus who has dedicated personnel for the different jobs (but still uses 5€ temps for the shittier jobs and never really has a single more line open than absolutely necessary) and a Wasgau where even at absolute rush hour the cashiers don't really have queues and where even the people stocking the shelves are full time employed and get regular wages. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of people would rather work an 8h shift to 2200 or 2300 at full wages and with normal breaks than work 11+ hours at one of the discounters that stretches your shifts from 0800 to 2030 and still only pays you for the official openening hours from 0900 to 2000.
