Dick Trauma posted:I was in Hollywood this morning and noticed this poster. The movie is from 1933 so it's not surprising that Dr. Yen is played by a Dane named Nils Asther but I was surprised that Barbara Stanwyck is drawn in a see through gown and yes, you can see her nipples. The Bitter Tea of General Yen is great, don't knock it. And pre-code posters were ALL ABOUT see-through dresses.

What was the new marvelous screen technique? EDIT: Maybe it was nude-o-vision. EDIT EDIT: Hey, Vargas drew that poster!

Bitter Tea owns but it's not even Stanwyck's best film from 1933 . No see through dress on the poster, though

Bunohan: Return to Murder is coming to the US on VOD and digital platforms, and the poster and trailer are already selling it too much as an action movie. While there are a couple of muay thai fights and several people getting murdered, the movie is more about the personal conflicts of the 3 brothers that are the main characters. In other words, lots of talking. That said, it is a bit like Bullet To The Head and Jack Reacher in that it's all really about real estate. It also gets pretty surreal at times; there's a 'crocodile spirit' lady, and the beginning apparently breaks the 4th wall. I think I like the 'pile of skulls' poster better. Of course, when it was in cinemas in Malaysia they used this one: I do like that each brother is holding something relevant to their professions, and the antagonist is the only one looking away from the viewer.

After seeing The League of Gentlemen over the free Criterion weekend I got to say it has an amazing poster. There's something terrifyingly Orwellian about the stylized bowler, gas mask and sten gun: I also finally appreciate the skewering that Pelham 123 gives to the whole concept of 'military raid' robberies against civilians. The British military mastermind Mr. Blue has to be a send up of the colonel's meticulous plan in League.

Now this, this is a poster. I sort of like the really wordy posters though. I guess it makes me feel like people were less cynical then because they hadn't perfected the art of advertising.

Still gotta watch Lupine, but I love those posters. Also, speaking of Kathleen Burke: She won a talent show to get her role in Island of Lost Souls, as they wanted to cast an unknown to make her seem more exotic; her subsequent career capitalized on that Panther Woman publicity. Another highlight that I remember from that is that the bad guy straight up throws his wife into a pit of alligators. It doesn't try to cheat you with a good title, that's for sure.

I'd probably love the film if I wasn't expecting a hardcore gorefest like all the advertising promised. Look at that! gently caress yeah! Let me just get all the lads around for a piss up and some violent, testosterone driven anarch... Oh, oh wait... And it wasn't just the DVD cover, it was the adverts too. Showing pretty much all the fight scenes and not hinting at the hour or so 7 fellas sit off in a boat and talk about god. I do need to watch it again, mind. As I say I'd probably love it.
