Dumb question, but is it possible to start a new forum thread from within the app, or are you only restricted to replies? I can't figure out how to do it from an iPad.

OK, I don't think I've seen this mentioned yet. I'm getting a rendering error in some links on the in-built browser where the background colour will show up as whatever the post background colour is (meaning in dark mode I get black text on black background ) Example: in this post I click the link and it looks like this: Also, I retract all previous comments pooh-poohing dark mode. It rules and I use it exclusively now. Edit: I get the same results on the iPad. TACD fucked around with this message at 22:17 on Feb 19, 2013 |

6.1.2 just came out...today? I think. I don't think either .1 or .2 should affect Awful/page rendering but what do I know

Edit: Although technically the real fault is with the web developers for not specifying a background color on their sites, but I'm sure I've done the same thing plenty of times myself. Looks like there's a couple errors in there. The first one, "request body stream exhausted", should be fixed in 1.10.2 which is waiting for review. I'll look in to the other error, the range out of bounds.

A quick bug on 1.10.1: If you have your app set up in such a way where it doesn't keep the bookmarks bar displayed, you can get a "NSURLErrorDomain error -999" on a fairly regular basis by: 1. Displaying the Bookmarks toolbar, 2. Pulling down to refresh the Bookmarks, and 3. Swiping to hide the Bookmarks bar before the refresh is completed. If you've got a decent connection speed then a good portion of the time it'll finish refreshing before you can swipe, but I figured I'd bring it up in case it's just a quick modification to a "catch exception" expression to suppress. If it's already been brought up and fixed in the last 10 or so pages feel free to ignore me

Not to turn this into a "how to xcode" thread, but I'm curious about the basic structure of the app. Is there a reason (for example) the settings screen was done programmatically, rather than with the storyboard or interface builder? I understand a lot of developers have an innate distrust of "code generators" (with good reason) but a lot of xcode documentation out there treats the interface builder as the One True Way.

Chuck Bartowski posted:I did. I switched dark mode off for that one. Any way to fix this? I doubt it. OS X has this issue too, with copying also copying formatting of the words and not just the words. Except OS X has a setting where you can turn that behavior off, whereas iOS doesn't. Not sure why apple thinks there's any case were you'd WANT the format to be copied.

xzzy posted:Not to turn this into a "how to xcode" thread, but I'm curious about the basic structure of the app. Awful used to be storyboards. I switched it all over to code at some point because editing iPad storyboards is a horrible experience. That's the only reason. One day I just snapped trying to work on the iPad storyboard, and everything became code. Interface Builder is excellent among its peers, and I have no other problem with it. If Awful was an iPhone-only app, it would use storyboards. And I'd happily accept a pull request that used a nib or storyboard for some new screen. For what it's worth, nibs and storyboards are actually serialized objects. There's no generated code. I don't think this is off topic at all (people seem to like occasional glimpses into the process), but if you like, there's also the iOS dev thread. Chuck Bartowski posted:

If you open a link from portrait, go into landscape, close the link, then go back into portrait, it messes up the title.

I hate to be that guy, but if I try and load the Wii U megathread's first page in awful, it crashes on my iPad 3. I don't know how to copy a link to a thread in awful though so I can't really make a link right now.... Wait... Safari. E: link: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3507212 Don't know what it is that causes it to die, but I can load a ridiculous amount of .gifs from the pyf thread so I don't think it's an issue of memory. I hate to be that guy, but it works on my machine (which is also an iPad 3). Though it's pretty sluggish; Awful got a few memory warnings, probably from loading all those massive images. I added crash reporting to the new version, Awful 1.10.2 (should appear in your App Store in the next few hours). If you can update, then make it crash, I'll get a note the next time you open the app. If you have more time than patience, can you get a console log just before the crash? You can grab an app like System Console to grab console logs. That might help me figure it out.

pokeyman posted:I don't have this on my list, I must've forgotten to write it down. Can you tell me more? Sometimes public wifi networks required you to hit a webpage in a browser to login or click an accept button on terms of service. Before you open the browser the phone thinks it's fully connected to wifi, but if you open Awful before logging in it tries to refresh stuff and if I remember correctly it either shows a blank list of threads/forum or crashes depending on which page it's trying to load. Now that I think about it I think the only one that crashed was if you tried to go into the settings tab.

By any means, your update has gone up so I tried it with that, it died again for me. I grabbed down System Console as per your request, here is a somewhat pruned log I guess? I tried to post the whole bloody thing to Dropbox, but that not only didn't work, it flooded the log with a ton of irrelevant info. Here is all of the data from the log after it killed Awful to update it. I pruned out the Dropbox bullshit for the sake of brevity... The only thread opened was this one, and the first page of the Wii U thread. I put in whitespace to signify my going to Dropbox to try and upload the log. If you want the full log notes, I can email them to you, but they are just this with a shitton of Dropbox stuff. code:
