The Life-Changing, World-Altering, Mind-Shattering Super-League IX Preview: Norris-Smythe Division Time for more loving previews. To recap for those who are new to the thread, 'good' in the Super-League is a relative term. For example, Roger Maris was one of the best players in baseball in the early '60s. In the Super-League, he's just another guy. So, to judge how good teams are, the only sensible thing to do is measuring them against each other. Let's get to it. Catcher 1. '30 Gabby Hartnett/'99 Mike Pizza (RYL) 2. '27 Mickey Cochrane (WAL) 3. '79 Ted Simmons (HRV) 4. '82 Ted Simmons (SLA) 5. '26 Bob O'Farrell/'11 Miguel Montero (IDA) The Cultists have the best hitters by a fairly decent margin, and since none of these guys are really great defensive catchers, that puts them in the lead. I also like Cochrane, but he can't play everyday, and his backup is Jim Sundberg, who was considered a bad hitter in the real world, let alone the Super-League. Between the two Simmons, I'll take the younger model, who had a better chance of staying healthy and being decent behind the plate. The O'Farrell/Montero platoon is making the best of a bad situation, but it's still a bad situation. First Baseman 1. '27 Jimmie Foxx (WAL) 2. '09 Albert Pujols (RYL) 3. '99 John Olerud (SLA) 4. '03 Todd Helton (IDA) 5. '79 Keith Hernandez (HRV) Foxx is just a bit better than Pujols, I think, especially since he's a bit younger. But it's a very slight difference, and one that random chance might flip in practice. Still, I like Foxx a little better. I put Olerud in front of Helton because the W's play in a much easier park for left-handed hitters. I'm sure that Rockies fans everywhere can appreciate the irony there. Keith Hernandez is probably pretty close to the level of the other two, but doesn't have the power of Helton, or the stadium of Olerud. Second Baseman 1. '02 Nap Lajoie (HRV) 2. '26 Rogers Hornsby (IDA) 3. '86 Lou Whitaker (SLA) 4. '30 Rogers Hornsby/'98 Craig Biggio (RYL) 5. '27 Eddie Collins/'85 Bobby Grich (WAL) Lajoie and Hornsby are close, and I guess I don't have a lot to justify this preference other than Mogul doesn't really seem to think that Hornsby is much more than a mid-range slugger, and since he isn't quite elite at taking walks, I guess I'd rather have Nap, who is almost always decent with the bat. But it's close. I can already hear CthulhuDreams complaining that Hornsby should be ranked above Whitaker, but Whitaker is much, much better defensively, and is a left-hander in a park that boosts left-handed hitting. Old Hornsby may or may not be able to go the entire season without breaking down, and Biggio has been disappointing in the Super-League. Eddie Collins is 40, Bobby Grich is 36, and that platoon is essentially a race to the Disabled List. Third Baseman 1. '64 Ron Santo (RYL) 2. '69 Ron Santo (HRV) 3. '04 Scott Rolen (SLA) 4. '27 Jimmie Dykes (WAL) 5. '55 Ray Boone (IDA) SANTO IS ALWAYS NUMBER 1! And, in this case, he is also number two. Rolen has usually been solid for the W's, and his defense is an important part of their success, but he is not Ron Santo, and therefore cannot be rated above Ron Santo. Jimmie Dykes' stats look great, but that's because he played in a high-offense era. He's okay, but not much more than that. Ray Boone isn't going to kill you, but he's not going to do great things for you either. Shortstop 1. '97 Nomar Garciaparra (WAL) 2. '39 Arky Vaughan (RYL) 3. '09 Asdrubal Cabrera (SLA) 4. '55 Harvey Kuenn (IDA) 5. '79 Garry Templeton (HRV) Why Nomar over Arky? Well, because Arky's best tool was his batting eye, but there really aren't that many walks to draw in the Super-League. Also, I like young Nomar's power more, and finally, because Cthulhu is banking on Arky's year-27 season being his best even though he was a peak-early type of player and Mogul can model that. Cabrera is there for defense, and he does a fine job at that. Kuenn isn't as good at defense, given that he had to move off the position by age 27, and doesn't have much power or patience. Garry Templeton is probably going to have to be replaced in the Super-Draft. Left Fielder 1. '88 Barry Bonds (HRV) 2. '29 Al Simmons (SLA) 3. '27 Al Simmons (WAL) 4. '59 Stan Musial/'35 Bob Johnson (RYL) 5. '26 Ray Blades (IDA) Bonds' batting average is going to be very low, but his OBP and power will still make him worthwhile. Simmons is a solid hand in the Super-League, though I'd rather have the slightly more mature version from '29. Stan Musial is very old, and I don't think that Bob Johnson is really as good as Cthulhu thinks he is. And given his production in the Super-League, it looks like I'm winning that debate. Ray Blades would be a great name for a hitman, but he's going to be a disaster as a starter in the Super-League. To the extent that Ray Blades' first kill assignment from Grinnblade is going to be...himself! Center Fielder 1. '64 Mickey Mantle (IDA) 2. '61 Willie Mays (WAL) 3. '61 Duke Snider (SLA) 4. '11 Tris Speaker (RYL) 5. '88 Andy Van Slyke (HRV) Four of the best center fielders of all time, even if Mantle and Snider are a bit long in the tooth. Mantle is the best bet, based on past performance in the Super-League. Mays is an all-time great, and you could make the case that he should rank above Mantle, but I'm not willing to go that far. Duke Snider is old, but he does have the advantage of being in a great park for left-handed hitters. Now if he can only avoid getting injured again, the W's will be happy to have him. Tris Speaker's big problem is that the three guys ahead of him are going to hit 30 home runs this season, and Speaker will be lucky to hit 10. And contact skills can only make up for so much of that. Andy Van Slyke should stick to alt-history novels. Right Fielder 1. '26 Babe Ruth (SLA) 2. Babe Ruth gets this spot too. 3. '55 Al Kaline (IDA) 4. '46 Mel Ott/'08 Carlos Beltran (RYL) 5. '50 Carl Furillo (WAL) 6. '02 Elmer Flick (HRV) Babe Ruth deserves both of those spots. Al Kaline is good, but he's not Ruth-good, but he's good enough to actually help a team, and that's something in the Super-League. '46 Mel Ott is old, so very, very old. If he can survive most of a season in the field, it would be a miracle, but Beltran should be good, even if, at the moment, he's not slated to start many games. I'm not sure why Furillo is starting, but I'd rather have him in the field than Cobb. Flick is going to teach us all whether a million singles can make up for a lack of power, patience, or fielding ability. Designated Hitter 1. '00 Barry Bonds (HRV) 2. '99 Mike Pizza/'30 Rogers Hornsby (RYL) 3. '02 Ed Delahanty (SLA) 4. '27 Ty Cobb (WAL) 5. '26 Jim Bottomley (IDA) Bonds is on the juice, and therefore is close to god in slugger form. Pizza and Hornsby are good enough hitters that they can be credible even at the DH spot, the only concern being that it will make it harder for Hornsby to rest, because he's getting no days off ever under this plan. Delahanty is just a solid hitter, even if he's not a true slugger. Old Cobb can still hit, but he's so old that he's probably going to degrade over the course of the season even at the DH spot. There's not a lot that can be done about that, though. Jim Bottomley is a good hitter, but not a great one. Bench 1. '07 Adam Dunn/'03 Mark Bellhorn/'95 Lloyd Moseby/'93 Darren Daulton/'85 Howard Johnson (SLA) 2. Platoon Partners/'24 Joe Sewell/'90 Robin Yount (RYL) 3. '03 Mark Bellhorn/'76 Cesar Cedeno/'03 Larry Walker/'04 Miguel Tejada (IDA) 4. '82 Jim Sundberg/'87 Don Mattingly/'85 Doug DeCinces/'15 Baby Doll Jacobson (WAL) 5. '88 Rafael Balliard/'02 Socks Seybold/'02 Harry Davis/'88 Sid Bream/'88 Bobby Bonilla (HRV) I like the W's bench better because they are an actual bench, as opposed to Cthulhu's bench, where, if a player gets injured, his intricate system of platooning almost immediately breaks down into so many pieces as I laugh. Oh, how I will laugh. The Potatoes' bench is kind of a mess, but it has some interesting pieces, none of which can ever be trusted to start for this team. The Rakers' have Don Mattingly and a sea of troubles. SID BREAM IS NOT A CATCHER! SP1 1. '02 Rube Waddell (HRV) 2. '27 Lefty Grove (WAL) 3. '26 Pete Alexander (IDA) 4. '01 Christy Mathewson (RYL) 5. '92 Jack McDowell (SLA) I like Rube more than Grove because Waddell gets the deadball bonus, but they're both solid guys at the top of the rotation. The problem with Alexander is that if he gets injured, he's so old that there's a good chance that he stays down. That could be messy. Mathewson is still very young, and a bit erratic, and the Cultists' defense is still not great, and might be a bit worse than before. Jack McDowell is still not quite an ace. SP2 1. '22 Walter Johnson (RYL) 2. '61 Sandy Koufax (SLA) 3. '02 Eddie Plank (HRV) 4. '55 Jim Bunning (IDA) 5. '97 Kevin Brown (WAL) Johnson is old, but he's still the Big Train. I'll take Sandy Koufax over Plank because Koufax doesn't have to worry about how good the defense behind him is, although it appears as though the Elites' defense should be good enough to carry him. Jim Bunning (R-KY) has usually been solid in the Super-League, if never super-exciting. Kevin Brown is always in the dispersal draft, which should tell you everything you need to know about how much he helps teams. SP3 1. '13 Pete Alexander (SLA) 2. '00 Curt Schilling (RYL) 3. '76 J.R. Richard (IDA) 4. '90 Jose Rijo (HRV) 5. '82 Jon Matlack (WAL) Alexander is way, way better than any of these other guys. It's not really even that close. Curt Schilling is up and down in the Super-League. Sometimes he has the power to be good, sometimes he doesn't and gets rocked. It's hard to predict how he'll end up. Richard is pure power, which will either work great or be a complete disaster with nothing in between. Jose Rijo is okay. Just okay. Jon Matlack was only ever slightly above-average, and he was near the end of his road in '82. SP4 1. '02 Cy Young (SLA) 2. '78 Steve Carlton (RYL) 3. '64 Whitey Ford (IDA) 4. '82 Frank Tanana (WAL) 5. '88 Doug Drabek (HRV) Cy Young won 511 games. If a guy won 25 games for 20 straight seasons, he'd still be 11 games short of Young's total. Still, Young needs a good defense to be fully effective. Of course, the W's have exactly that. Carlton is a lefty in his prime. Ford is a lefty past his prime. Tanana would still pitch for another decade past '82, but only as a slop-throwing lefty, a type of pitcher that has not exactly worked to perfection in the Super-League. I don't trust young Drabek. SP5 1. '11 Cliff Lee (WAL) 2. '12 Stephen Strasburg (HRV) 3. '12 Jeff Tesreau (SLA) 4. '11 Ray Collins (RYL) 5. '76 Larry Dierker (IDA) Cliff Lee and the misfits! Lee is the only pitcher of the bunch I actually like with no reservations, even if he is a lefty. Stras is so young that he's going to be erratic to levels that might prove detrimental to the team. Jeff Tesreau is just another deadballer. That's fine for a #5 starter, but it's nothing to get excited about. Amazingly, Collins is still in Cthulhu's rotation, which is amazing seeing as, if you made as many trades as Cthulhu, you'd think you'd have gotten rid of him by that point. Larry Dierker? Really? This is going to end in tears. Bullpen 1. '82 Tom Henke/'85 Al Holland/'82 Danny Darwin/'85 John Candelaria/'82 Rick Honeycutt/'85 Don Sutton (WAL) 2. '90 Rob Dibble/'?? Eri Yoshida/'72 Sparky Lyle/'01 Kazuhiro Sasaki/'88 Dave Smith/'25 Burleigh Grimes (SLA) 3. '03 Kazuhiro Sasaki/'89 Jeff Montgomery/'10 Phil Coke/'09 Joakim Soria/'10 Brandon League/'83 Frank Tanana (RYL) 4. '06 Joe Nathan/'79 Mark Littell/'88 Jeff Robinson/'88 Barry Jones/'79 Will McEnaney/'88 John Smiley (HRV) 5. In the Super-League, that's impressive. I like the W's bullpen, except for the fact that Yoshida is a ticking time bomb that has already killed one W's season, and must be stopped before she does it again. The Cultists bullpen has always been mediocre, and Brandon League sure as gently caress isn't going to be the man to change that. The Elites have Joe Nathan and, evidently, a belief that he can pitch all of the relief innings for the team. The Potatoes think that Brian Fuentes is a starter. For the 6th to 9th slot, descending order of OBP is fine, basically for each spot 'up' the batting order you go you get 18 extra PAs a season or so, so you want 6th to be better than 9th. If you want to break ties between 6 and 7th and 8 and 9ths, more base stealing is better in 6th, and more OBP in 9th. OK so looking at this, how do you break down? Top 3: Mantle, Pujols, Musial Next 2: Slaughter + Yogi Berra vs RHP, Braun vs LHP So it makes more sense to have something like: 1: Musial 2: Mantle 3: Yogi/Braun 4: Pujols 5: Slaughter - Swap Yogi and Slaughter if you want against LHP, but Braun is mos def the number 3 man against RHP. 6: Braun / Gil 7: Gil / Walker Cooper 8: Nellie Fox 9: Marty Marion But really compared to having the top 5 hitters in the top 5 slots, everything else is so much noise. Yes you're going to 'waste' some musial homers at the top of the 1st, but that doesn't matter 'cause he'll still be on base for Mantle/Yogi/Pujols more than Nellie will, and I'd rather give the extra 108 PAs to Stan Musial over Nellie Fox. Canton Catastrophes: A rookie franchise with a lot of enthusiasm, and considerably less pitching. Can the pride of Ohio bring glory back to their state? And would the victory of a fantasy fantasy baseball team be the best thing to happen to that state in decades? The answers to those questions are 'maybe' and 'by a wide margin'. Montreal Manatees: Like most forms of life, the manatee cannot live in Montreal, for it cannot stand the pretension of its inhabitants, nor digest the mysterious substance, allegedly food, known as poutine. Ryleh Cultists: A unending thorn in my side, who have made up for their boneheaded trade of Ernie Banks by stealing Arky Vaughan from the Colliders. I'm very bitter about this. Sad Pandas: Great defense. BUT AT WHAT COST? Can Marty Marion, Nellie Fox and Gil McDougald hit enough to keep this team afloat? Or will we send Pander to the Island of Misfit Owners? There to spend the rest of his days with the factorialites and echopapas of this world? Walney Rakers: Well, I was always a bit fond of the Cologne Emperors.   Of course the Cultists win. I hate this season and it hasn't even started yet. You have all failed me.    I guess that's proof that the Unspecifieds are a no-DH team at heart.    Your team appears to be morally opposed to contact hitting. On the plus side, that Marichal acquisition looks better and better.   At least there's a pretty neat division between your hitters that are good, and those that are going to get your relegated.   Looks like most of your problems are caused by Mets players. Funny how art imitates life, eh?    Well, in fairness, your rotation is mainly made up of Southerners and Randy Johnson, all of whom hate Canada, especially the French part.    drat it all to loving hell! This is your doing theacox! You gave Cthulhu the Arky Vaughan he needed to escape the Sewell trap I had set for him. I was so drat close! WHY?!   Outstanding infield defense...pisspoor infield offense, though. That's a lot better than I was expecting, though Sammy being my weakest pitcher is kind of a bust, especially since I was banking on his ridiculous K/9. Oh well, second place! Only four games behind Cthulhu! Exciting! Now here's hoping my guys remember how to hit for contact when it comes time for the Super League proper. Also: great choice of theme, Smasher. A perfect tune for this rag-tag team.

This past season, they and the Coburns effectively cleared out the other three veteran teams in the division, allowing new teams a golden opportunity to...likely get killed by the Coburns and Rockford Losers. But hey, maybe one of these spunky newcomers will prove to have the warrior spirit to topple the established order! Catcher 1. '65 Joe Torre (ROC) 2. '34 Gabby Hartnett (TIJ) 3. '73 Thurman Munson (LOV) 4. '64 Elston Howard (COB) 5. '04 Jorge Posada (OMA) In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Young Torre was a good hitter, so I guess he's my preference because Hartnett is a bit older, and being old is very bad for catchers. I've never been a huge fan of Munson, mainly because he never really drew many walks or learned how to properly fly a small plane. Elston Howard was 35 years old in 1964, and in the middle of his last good season at the plate. I'm not sure if that's a great sign. I don't like Jorge Posada, because he doesn't hit enough in Mogul to make up for his mediocre defense. First Baseman 1. '93 Frank Thomas (ROC) 2. '27 Jimmie Foxx (COB) 3. '89 Mark McGwire (LOV) 4. '87 Don Mattingly (TIJ) 5. '90 Fred McGriff (OMA) I'll take Prime-Thomas over Young-Foxx, especially since neither give a single poo poo about defense, or base-running, or anything not related to producing massive amounts of offense. Mark McGwire is going to hit .230, but he'll hit home runs, and draw walks, and that's what really matters. Donnie Baseball has that bad back, and, again, power over contact every time. Fred McGriff was a solid player for many, many years, but he almost never rose above 'solid', and also couldn't manage 500 home runs in an era when EVERYONE hit 500 home runs. Clearly, he should have taken more PEDs. Second Baseman 1. '93 Roberto Alomar/'00 Jeff Kent (ROC) 2. '75 Rod Carew/'85 Ryne Sandberg (COB) 3. '89 Ryne Sandberg (LOV) 4. '12 Nap Lajoie (OMA) ?. '?? The Machine (TIJ) Platoons! I'll take Alomar/Kent over Carew/Sandberg because the slight edge goes to Alomar's defense over Carew's contact skills. I like Sandberg more than Jeff, again because of defense, but both are only apt to start 40 or 50 games in a season barring injuries, so that doesn't quite move the needle. Sandberg is pretty close to the top two as well, though, even if he's occasionally been shaky in the Super-League. '12 Nap Lajoie is old, 37 years old, for a middle infielder, and is defense, in Mogul terms, wasn't great to begin with. Who can say what the Machine is, or what havoc it's mechanical engines and turbines will have on the League. Third Baseman 1. '83 George Brett/'78 Mike Schmidt (COB) 2. '04 Alex Rodriguez (OMA) 3. '07 Kevin Youkilis (ROC) 4. '02 Troy Glaus (LOV) 5. '82 Buddy Bell (TIJ) Brett AND Schmidt? Now that is just overkill. A-Rod's career may have effectively ended in ignominy, but he was still in his HGH-fuelled prime in 2004, and, with any luck, he'll do the people of Omaha proud. And, if not, it's just Omaha. Youk is solid, and expendable, but he's never kept the Losers from winning bunches of games before. Troy Glaus can hit home runs. I don't know that he can do anything else, but at least that's something. Buddy Bell cost the Mules a 3rd-Round Pick. Bograt should remember that. Shortstop 1. '04 Derek Jeter (OMA) 2. '34 Joe Cronin (ROC) 3. '87 Barry Larkin (COB) 4. '06 Rich Aurilia (TIJ) 5. '02 David Eckstein (LOV) Jeter is so good at baseball that, when word broke that he left gift baskets for his lovers that included autographed baseballs, everyone collectively decided that it was the coolest thing ever, even though, had A-Rod done it, they would have run him out of town on a rail. Cronin is not a great defender by '34, but he's a great hitter for a shortstop. Barry Larkin is a guy who did a lot of things well, but nothing great. Putting the broken down remains of Rich Aurilia at shortstop is grounds for an involuntary commitment where I come from. The Ecks-Factor is somehow starting in the Super-League. Something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. Left Fielder 1. '39 Ted Williams (COB) 2. '89 Barry Bonds (LOV) 3. '21 Tris Speaker (ROC) 4. '83 Dave Winfield (TIJ) 5. '12 Joe Jackson (OMA) Who is better, Bonds or Williams? I'd say Williams, because he had better contact skills and played in a less hitter-friendly era. Also, '89 Bonds doesn't have his chemically-engineered power stroke just yet, although he was getting there. Tris Speaker is a bit old, and loses a bit of value by moving to LF. Dave Winfield had 3000 hits in the Major Leagues, but never seemed to be a real super-star, probably because he played for the Yankees in their Lost Decade. Joe Jackson hits for contact, and that's it. I'm not sure how far that will take him in the Super-League. Center Fielder 1. '?? Oscar Charleston (ROC) 2. '97 Bernie Williams (COB) 3. '03 Ichiro Suzuki (LOV) 4. '89 Tony Gwynn (TIJ) 5. '04 Bernie Williams (OMA) Charleston wins by a ton, as he might be the best player in history and, even if he isn't, he's the only one on this list that is even close to that mark. Bernie Williams was a solid player, and, with Bruzer gone, I think we can all finally agree that he wasn't much of a musician. Suzuki has elite contact skills, and is a relatively good fielder in center, but he will not hit more than 5-7 home runs, and that's a shame. Tony Gwynn isn't a good fielder, doesn't take walks, and doesn't hit for power, but he can really crank out some singles. He probably should be doing it from right field, though. Old Bernie Williams is just loving depressing. You made me feel sad, Gabriel Pope, you need to make that right. Right Fielder 1. '33 Mel Ott (COB) 2. '64 Frank Robinson (ROC) 3. '87 Dave Winfield (TIJ) 4. '04 Hideki Matsui (OMA) 5. '02 Tim Salmon (LOV) Ott is a force in the middle of a lineup, and almost always performs in the Super-League. Hell, I made him the heart of the Macho Men offense. Frank Robinson is also good, but not quite as consistent. Dave Winfield...has never eaten a kitten. That we know of. That's probably the nicest thing I can say about him. Hideki Matsui was known as "Godzilla" in Japan. In the Super-League, he is known as "Fifth Outfielder". Tim Salmon is famous for being the greatest player to never make an all-star game in the past fifty years. That's kind of like being the best pilot to ever fly a jet into a mountain. Bench 1. '83 Don Slaught/'97 Derek Jeter/'29 Chuck Klein/'87 Eric Davis/Platoon Partners (COB) 2. '90 Mike Scioscia/'90 Eddie Murray/'87 Willie Randolph/'89 Garry Templeton/'06 Ken Griffey/'87 Rickey Henderson (TIJ) 3. '95 Roger Clemens (OMA) 3. '94 Greg Maddux (COB) 4. '89 Greg Maddux (LOV) 5. '90 Fernando Valenzuela (TIJ) Is Paige the best pitcher of all time? I don't know, but I do know that he's better than the rest of these guys. I give Clemens the bump over Los Dos Maddux because he's got power, and power conquers all. I'll also take the slightly more mature version of Maddux who was in the middle of winning four Cy Young awards. As for '90 Fernando...well, let me tell you a little story. In 1986, a notorious prankster from L.A. bet Tommy Lasorda that the Dodgers manager couldn't make his ace pitcher, Fernando Valenzuela, pitch 20 complete games in a single season. Now that was an insane workload, even for the era, but Lasorda wasn't going to lose that drat bet, and forced Fernando to gut it out, start after start. It basically wrecked Fernando's arm, but Lasorda won the bet, and the $10 gift certificate to Hardee's that came with it. Fernando never recovered. SP2 1. '71 Tom Seaver (ROC) 2. '53 Whitey Ford (LOV) 3. '04 Mike Mussina (OMA) 4. '85 Dave Stieb (COB) 5. '92 Juan Guzman (TIJ) Tom Terrific is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and the best pitcher of his era in his prime. That's pretty drat impressive. Whitey Ford is a lefty, and lefties have been somewhat of a mixed bag in the Super-League. Still, he is Whitey Ford. Mike Mussina was always better than people remember, even if that was never quite good enough for the merciless Yankees fans who have no soul. Dave Stieb was a great pitcher that most of your never heard of because he was too young, and he spent almost the entirety of his career in the far-off land of Canada, a magical land whose only exports are hockey players and the most polite form of smugness on Earth. Juan Guzman didn't even win 100 games in his career. SP3 1. '75 Bert Blyleven (COB) 2. '61 Don Drysdale (ROC) 3. '45 Claude Passeau (LOV) 4. '90 Dave Stieb (OMA) 5. '89 Bruce Hurst (TIJ) Bert is a bit less wild than Drysdale, but this is a close one, and Drysdale isn't going to get to pitch in '60s-era Dodgers Stadium in the Super-League. The rest are...not-so-good. I guess I like Claude Passeau best, because Mogul will probably treat him kindly because of his era. Old Dave Stieb had the last good season of his career in 1990, which is rather ominous. Bruce Hurst's ERA+ is 104, meaning that he was a whopping 4% better than a league average pitcher in his career. I think that might cause a problem. SP4 1. '71 Nolan Ryan (ROC) 2. '90 Jimmy Key (OMA) 3. '04 Cliff Lee (COB) 4. '12 Stan Coveleski (TIJ) 5. '02 Kevin Appier (LOV) Nolan Ryan has the power. All of the power. And he, mainly, knows how to use it. Jimmy Key, on the other hand, has none of the power, but also knows how to use it. Cliff Lee has been up and down in the Super-League, mainly because he's a lefty without overwhelming stuff, and 2004 was a bit before he had learned to be Cliff Lee anyway. Stan Coveleski had a mighty fine spitball, and, by rule, if scientists ever find a way to reanimate his corpse, he would be entitled to use the spitball in the major leagues. Kevin Appier was the better part of a decade past his prime in 2002. SP5 1. '34 Mel Harder (OMA) 2. '90 Orel Hershiser (TIJ) 3. '71 Jerry Koosman (ROC) 4. '84 Tom Seaver (COB) 5. '89 Rick Sutcliffe (LOV) Harder is probably the only guy here who won't spontaneously combust during the middle of the season, which is a nice plus. Orel Hershiser wrecked his arm in the late '80s, so this isn't him at his best. Jerry Koosman is best suited to be a fifth starter, but he's been rather dependable in that role. Old Tom Seaver still has a bit of life in his arm, but not a ton. He might not survive the season with his arm intact. Rick Sutcliffe, before becoming a thoroughly awful commentator, was a thoroughly mediocre starter, except for a few good seasons. 1989 was not one of those seasons. Bullpen 1. '04 Mariano Rivera/'04 Billy Wagner/'90 Tom Henke/'04 Tom Gordon/'04 Paul Quantrill/'90 John Candelaria/'90 Duane Ward (OMA) 2. '01 John Smoltz/'94 John Wetteland/'87 Steve Bedrosian/'96 Arthur Rhodes/'90 Randy Myers/'04 C.C. Sabathia (ROC) 3. '89 Mark Davis/'87 Dave Righetti/'90 Tim Belcher/'89 Greg Harris/'90 Tim Crew/'90 John Wetteland (TIJ) 4. '92 Tom Henke/'84 Goose Gossage/'81 Jeff Reardon/'95 Paul Assenmacher/'13 Eppa Rixey/'66 Luis Tiant (COB) 5. The Losers bullpen has been reliable, if not dominating, and this is the same unit as last year. The Mules bullpen should be...okay...maybe. I don't know, I wish it had more talent, because those are a lot of mediocre relievers. The Coburns featured old Henke and old Goose. That might end well, but it probably won't. The Lovable Losers seem to think that Mitch Williams should be in their bullpen, breaking the hearts of every Phillies fan on the planet all over again.
