If you just want a carry case, this thing is a perfect fit. I much prefer it to anything that's attached because I only really use my tablet when I'm sitting down: at home, at work, on long-train journeys, on planes. These aren't situations where I'm going to drop it. And the N7 back feels so nice to hold.

Mine has survived two motorcycle accidents loose in my backpack with nothing more than a couple of light cosmetic scratches on the screen and some chipping around the bezel.

Mine's been running unprotected since October with nary a scratch or dent. It's a pretty well-built piece of equipment, for sure. In fairness, I'm also a bit more careful with it since it's rather heavy, so I know when it's shifting around or not set correctly in my back pocket.

I've got a similar Case Logic sleeve and I think it's perfect for the N7. That thing is built well enough that you don't really need a heavy-duty cover or case for it.

Anyone looking for a Treegloo-style, booklike case for their N7, I can't say enough good things about my Portenzo. It hardly ever gets mentioned so I'll throw it out here. As far as I can tell it's much better than either Treegloo or Dodocase. Not to mention they didn't lie about when it shipped.

Is there any way to keep auto updates turned on on my Nexus 7 but control when they are downloaded and installed? The drat thing slows way down during updates, but I don't want to have to do them manually. It always seems to update during my peak usage hours, the opposite of what I want.

Why not just turn off auto update during peak usage when you don't want it and then turn it back on later when you're not usuing your N7? :psyduck:
Unless you're using a 3G version and are worried about your data usage, in which case there's also an "update over wifi only" setting in the Play store, iirc.

I'm talking about auto updates for my apps. I'm not going to turn each app to manual updates every time I'm going to use the tablet. It's wifi only, and connected to wifi almost 24/7.

Is there not a global "update apps manually" setting?

I thought that button only changed what the apps default to when first installed, thanks for the help. It's still really loving stupid, though. Even Windows lets me set when updates happen.

Does anyone have any idea why the clock would suddenly be chewing through battery on the Nexus 7 since the latest update?

I left the tablet idle for 2 hours from a full charge and it's already down to 90%. It says the clock took up 93% of the energy.

Any remedy? Any reason? I see that a lot of people are having a similar battery problem, but it's usually due to Google Services and not the clock . . .

Only for Windows OS updates. Windows apps do whatever they please and don't have a convenient central "Update All" button.

After waffling back and forth on the Nexus or iPad fence, my girlfriend and I have all but made up our minds to get a 32 GB Nexus 10. We went to Staples to look at the N10 yesterday, but there was no display unit, so we played around with the N7 for a bit. We really dug the interface, but were bummed because the wifi connection was poo poo and we couldn't browse the web with Chrome. The sales guy at Staples told us the N7 is a quad-core and the N10 is only a dual-core, so the N10 would be "slower." Is the dual-core noticeable in the N10? And another question regarding the N7, does it have a headphone jack? I don't see a 3.5 mm headphone jack specified on Google's N7 tech specs page.

The Nexus 10 has two A15 cores. It's the best-performing Android device there is.

This is what I suspected. Thanks! :D

Would there be any difference on an N10 purchased from Staples vs purchased from Google? As in coming pre-installed with a bunch of garbage apps that I'd spend time deleting? I'm all pumped up to buy one tomorrow, but if a device purchased from Google would come with a cleaner install, I'll go that route, despite being impatient.

It's a Nexus, and it's not distributed by a carrier (who are the ones that like to load shitware). There should be no difference between the builds you would get from either (aside from the Staples one potentially being back-level if it shipped right before an update went out).

About the wifi you experienced on the N7 at Stables, that was Stables wifi being poo poo. The wifi on the N7 itself is actually amazing. I've never had it drop on me. On the other hand, the wifi on my PC, and phone is total crap and goes out constantly.

It sounds like you don't need to know this any more, but there is definitely a headphone socket on the N7, it's on the bottom edge.

Also confirming that the N7 Wi-Fi reception is way better than on any phone I've used (which I'd imagine is simply because it has a bigger antenna).

If it would be running an older version of Android, would it get around to updating quickly? Can I scan for updates to Android?

Right. I should have specified. The wifi connection provided by Staples was poo poo.

Thanks for clearing that up, the apparent lack of a headphone jack was a deciding factor. Although at this point I don't think it's going to be a game changer.

Yes. It would most likely pick up the update automatically the first time you turned it on, but otherwise there is a manual check on the Settings -> About screen.

You can scan for it, or if you wait a little bit, the tablet will bug you about it. Either way, updates come quickly to (Non-Verizon) Nexus devices.

Yeah, the Nexus 10 is so much faster than the 7, it's not even a competition. That's even WITH the higher resolution it has to push.

Hell, a dual core S4 is faster than a tegra 3 and that's only a slight evolution on the A9.

I'm extremely pleased with my Dodocase for what it's worth. Extremely functional, looks good, has the magnet. Why is the Portenzo much better?

I don't mind the (removable) glue back but I could see that annoying people. I've never had a need to remove the case.

Yeah the adhesive was what I had heard people complain about. Personally I take mine out of the case now and then, for example if I want to prop it up in portrait.

Mainly I wanted to mention it because I hear Treegloo and DodoCase mentioned now and then but never Portenzo, so I wanted to give them a shout out.

If I remember right it only reflows text if you do a double-tap zoom.

So I have a pantech element tablet and we'd like to set it up for voice calling. I have google voice and talk a phone installed and a google voice account set up. I can make/receive calls from it I can hear the call from my phone but can't hear it from the tablet even when you're on speaker (the speaker works). The only solution i've found is to get a bluetooth headset and try that. But im looking for other possible solutions anybody have any thoughts?

Aside from the bottom right hand corner not snapping into place on mine (could be just a one off, as it doesn't seem to be a global issue), I really like the Poetic Slimline case (comes in different colors). It's a TPU back, with a leather look all around and the front cover is microfiber on the inside and folds in 2 spots, so you can you use it as a stand. Also has magnetic clasp to keep it closed and unlocks the screen when open. Got mine off ebay for $15. And since the bottom corner didn't snap into place and I didn't want to wait for an exchange, the dude off ebay offered me a $4 partial refund, which I thought was very nice of him.

However I've heard the Moko slim cover is nice, but I personally don't like how it actually covers the top. I would have ordered a Blurex Ultra Slim, if I could have found anyone that ships to Canada.

There's supposed to be an official flip cover for the 10 that you install by pulling off the plastic strip from the back and snapping the cover into place but we'll probably never see it because :nexusaccessories:

The first is much higher quality, and I use it now. The top one is alright, but it's just sitting on my desk unused. I'll mail it to you if you just cover shipping. Shoudn't be more than five or six bucks. I'm just going to throw it away.

The Nexus 10 case from Blurex gets recommended a lot around here. I have one and like it. It's a simple leather shell that can prop up the tablet in two positions, and has a smart cover. It's pretty cheap on Amazon and does what I was looking for in a case, though I wasn't looking to armor my tablet up to withstand a war or anything.

Mine outputs video, but at a 3:2 ratio. I don't know if it outputs audio because the only thing I have with an HDMI input is a monitor.
