I think the thing is that they're starting from a position that abortion is murder and God hates it enough to punish the entire country for it. From there they can justify doing just about anything in the name of stopping it. Next to the acts of domestic terrorism this attitude has sometimes fomented, making poo poo up about the medical facts of rape is relatively minor. They already routinely lie about abortions causing breast cancer and depression, and show pictures of the results of late-term miscarriages that look nothing at all like what gets removed in the vast majority of non-life-saving abortions. There's an amazing amount of dishonesty in the pro-life movement, but they're also so desperately emotional about it that I have a hard time imagining them doing anything calculatingly. I don't think they're stupid people, but I do think that this is a topic they have a very hard time being smart and rational about.

If the supreme court rules along one of the potential lines where gay marriage is validated the state level Republican backlash won't play out the same way, absent something ridiculous like placing restrictions on where weddings can legally be held or who can perform them, and even then that at best only removes some clergy and government officials. As it is just about anyone can legally perform a wedding. I've done it. You don't even need a ceremony, just get a couple friends to sign the officiating and witness paperwork and you're done.

This really is the crux of all political discussions on Iran. The entire thing stems from Iran having the temerity to try to wrest control of their country back and speak negatively of the US after we engineered a coup that overthrew their fairly liberal and democratically-elected government after they nationalized their oil fields to ensure their natural resources wouldn't be pilfered.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Iranian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat

I was really pleased that Argo opened with such a frank discussion of what happened that didn't try to spin Iran's opposition to the US as Iran=Evil. So many people have no idea the kind of havoc the US has caused in that region of the world. Any conservative who claims "The United States always acts as a force for good in the world." needs to have this thrown the gently caress back in their face. We destroyed a democratically-elected secular government so we could pay a few percent less for their oil, and then we acted all surprised and shocked when they didn't take kindly to it.

In peak poo poo That Didn't Happen tonight, Michael Savage told a story, which he insisted was true, about how he lost his socialist brainwashing from college.

The story goes that he went to work for the Welfare Office after college because that was what he had been brainwashed to do, and his job was to go to the homes of people on Welfare and inventory their possessions. He said he made $5750 a year doing that "if he remembers correctly." Once he went to a woman's house, a woman named "Ms. I can't say her name or I'll be accused of racism" and took inventory. His supervisor then asked him if she had things like a bed and nightstands and a sofa and end tables and lamps, and eventually had him deliver her a check for $3500 to buy all of those things because "those are all of the things a civilized person needs to live." He then protested that he had a college degree and only had a coffee table made from cinder blocks and a board and no sofa and his supervisor said "well you're not on Welfare." He quit a couple weeks later, outraged, and has been gracing the world with his conservative dickholery ever since.

People seriously believe this bullshit. The mind boggles.

Huh? Beck has flat out said his show is just entertainment before, on several occasions, and Michael Savage is probably as close to a true believer as you're going to find in national radio. The man just hates the world, and being a conservative is like having a license to hate most of the groups of people in the country. Turns out de-funding planned parenthood is going to cost the state of texas millions of taxpayer dollars due to the medical treatment needed because of the lack of women's health services that planned parenthood clinics normally provide. (Primarily in the form of an estimated 24,000 additional unwanted births.) So republicans there are backpedaling and trying to find some roundabout way to provide the same services under a different name.

So during yesterday's drive home I'm listening to Sean Hannity and I tune in just when he has a guy on who is, in a very calm, calculating and intelligent fashion, defending his hometown of Detroit. Well Hannity did what the radio talking heads always do when someone who is articulate and actually knows what they are talking about gets thru, he cut the guy off, said that he didn't understand that Detroit was doomed, just like the U.S. under Obama. But then, Hannity went further and said, paraphrasing here: I don't know how close you are to North Dakota, but if you can, the only thing that could possibly save Detroit is fracking and drilling and you need to do that immediately because that's what will save America.

So Hannity's answer to everything recently has been, do what North Dakota is doing, and he has absolutely no idea what North Dakota is even doing. I would bet that Hannity couldn't even point out where Detroit is at on a map of the U.S.
