They destroyed at least one Jensen Interceptor - when I was last at the studio where they were shooting they had one of those cut-in-half car rigs on a dolly with a smashed up Jensen :(

When I read this I came to the assumption that Chery - the Chinese auto manufacturer, was now building ancient K-cars. It made sense to me, I figured maybe they bought the rights during the carpocalypse and given what they've been able to produce when left to their own devices.

I thought maybe they figured a 30 year old Chrysler was better.

It is trying valiantly to avoid eye contact with any other cars, even as it slowly and inevitably drives right into one.

God drat, that bumper. I'm tempted to stick a tiny rudder on the back and hook up an electric prop. It looks fairly seaworthy.

Part of me wishes that foreign automakers actually have focus groups for designing cars like that;

:eng101: "Look! Just like it's cousin the cruise ship sails through the seas this baby sails right through the mid-day traffic!"

:downs: "yay"

:eng101: "Positive reaction! Send it to production!"

Really though if they cleaned up the back end it'd be a neat looking car.

The car on the left is the Mustang. The car on the right is the mystery mobile.

They didn't have rectangular headlights, just the housings and the lights were round. I GIS'ed like a madman and the only thing with similar headlight/housing I found was a 77 Cutlass, which then led me to believe that the car in question was an earlier Cutlass.

With those headlights it's definitely not a 70 Chevelle, either!

My first thought was a Ford LTD because it has that horrible 80s light setup but still has the straight lines from the late 70s, but it isn't that either.

I think it is, or an El Camino, anyway, The bumper, grille, and hood edge profile all match. I'd say someone's "custom" fitted square headlights (sadly.)

I think you're right, '70 El Camino. Note the circular hazards recessed into the bumper.

Also note the '82 El Camino rectangular headlights. :eng99:

The Mustang looks incredible though, the frame rebuild looks pretty drat sharp.

The grille and fenders give it away as a 70 Chevelle/El Camino, or at least something with the fenders/header panel from one. Someone converted it to rectangular lights, looking at those lights I'd suspect they're from a ~76 Caprice.

With a different paint job, a winch through the bumper, a spare tire on the hood, and a SAW mounted to the passenger side A pillar, I fear the Chinese may have invented the cutest and most unsuspecting amphibious assault vehicle of all time.

Correct, that is a 1970 El Camino SS just out of frame. I'll be sure to get some more pictures of that and of the Mustang when I go back next weekend.

My guess is it's an automatic transmission left in drive that didn't move without any throttle but it took off when they high idled it for the crane?

Anphear
Jan 20, 2008

/\/\/\ I think when they lowered the stabilising rams they lifted the wheels enough to cause the tyres and therefore the handbrake to stop gripping the road. Also the massive weight of the crane over the front moved the weight.

Either way he a real good job avoiding that.
