This is what America has been reduced to. We need a little meter to tell ourselves how hungry we are.

This is such an easy invention, but the mock-up is all wrong. A hungry meter that's properly calibrated for the average american is just a wristband that says "Eat".

No kid thinks they can make a blockbuster movie in their back yard, you can't afford a proper camera much less editing and special effects. Maybe you can do a home camcorder thing for fun, but you know its going to be lovely. Even kickstarting it would be seen as ridiculous. We all know it takes millions to make a blockbuster movie.

But... because software is magic? People think kids can really make games? :argh: And yet, that's the expectation we present to kids. Go make something yourself! Make your own Halo, Jimmy! That's honestly cruel. Then the game itself sucks and the kid feel like its their fault?

Teaching kids to make games should involve giving them a Raspberry Pi and helping them make a text-based Zork knockoff in BASIC! Its that simple, and then you're actually learning a skill that you can later make into a career, and you're actually producing original content that you made yourself. And you understand how it came together, instead of just clicking buttons on some GUI as you're told to do. :colbert:

Using RPG maker to "make your game" is no different than paying a vanity press so you're "a published author" now. Sure, buddy. But not really. Not at all. Thats why people are saying the camp is a scam. Its full of unrealistic expectations. They're implying that you're going to learn a skill, but playing with MS Paint at home is going to get you just as much "skill" as kicking soccer balls and having some disgruntled camp manager walk a classroom through how to modify a sprite and load up the default settings.

The fact that they're called "iD" is also really scammy. But all in all, the camp probably isn't that bad, gives kids something to do at least, it IS a camp. The camp isn't as scammy as the kickstarter.

We're arguing two different things here. I think you want it come down, and I don't care an ounce. If you were to ask me whether or not I'd take it down based on setting a fund-my-life trend on kickstarter, I'd say it should come down. But, you'd also have to convince me that a 9-year-old is capable of stirring that much encouragement for people to follow suit. At a certain level, the amount of publicity people are giving this thing is making it a lot bigger than it should have been, and that, in turn, will result in more fund-my-life projects hoping to slip through.

DeepDickPizza posted:

Why would this be grounds for mass revolt? From what I remember quite a few people here called the Honey Badger BBQ Sauce guys incompetent for that miscue and got upset at them. To the best of my knowledge, though, they said they were going to rectify the problem with their production facility and send out new product to backers once they got it figured out. I'm honestly wondering how you decided to even remotely equate that project with this one?

I'm equating it based on grounds for removal from kickstarter. To me "We almost poisoned people," is much worse than "I exploited the good nature of people less fortunate than I." If kickstarter wants to ban projects that mar their reputation (i.e. fund my life/pornography) out of principle, then I don't see why they couldn't add food products to that category (especially when health products are banned) based on the incident. Then again, the way I worded my entire argument hinged on the fact that I think people are over-reacting, not that I think all three categories are equivalent in how they should be banned.

No, but if you want to teach your daughter some classic moves on how to be self-reliant and how to market herself in a world slated against her, then a website that promises to give you free money with no actual obligation to provide a product in return is a god-send. This is regardless of whether or not you are a millionaire, since free money is free money.

I've also used words like "semi-intelligent" and accused her of spamming, so note that I do have a low opinion of the mother.

You and I (and everybody else involved) can go back and forth about whether or not this was an orchestrated by the mother (since she herself is a competitor in crowdfunding), whether or not the daughter wrote a word on the page (her daughter could be in the country's best private school for all we know), and whether or not it's funny to lay every single part of family life bare for $20k (it is), but those issues seem to be subtext to the RPG camp hate/you don't even need the money/how dare you become a satire of the feminist movement arguments.

No one has said the fact the sons were acting like jackasses makes her a bad parent, her REACTION to it makes her parenting skills questionable. Kids can be arseholes, but the answer is not to make a kickstarter on one child's behalf where you attack and belittle the others. Publicly ridiculing your sons doesn't help your daughter, and it certainly doesn't help your sons or the family dynamic as a whole.

Maybe not on here, but I have seen that a lot on twitter and neogaf. I even wrote a small blurb in my blog about how they have time to play a lengthy game such as Borderlands 2 but not take the time to sit down and tell their children why being chauvinistic or misogynist is wrong. So yes people do realize that, maybe not as much on here, but it has been brought up across the net.

Actually teaching kids to make games on a Raspberry Pi in BASIC teaches them nothing that's actually useful to how games are made today. Using someone else's pre-packaged game engine is how most game programming works, and RPG maker would be closer to that.

I mean seriously your proposal teaches kids at best how programming used to be done, it doesn't even hint on object oriented or functional programming paradigms. It's straight up 70s imperative design. And the Raspberry Pi has bizarre constraints on what you can do that aren't useful to learning how to program on real world computers.

Plus kids SUCK at making text adventure parsers. It's just a fact. Teaching them Inform (the programming language) would be way more useful

A 9yr old isn't stirring that much encouragement, her mother is.

Whether of not is was orchestrated by the mother? We know it is posted by her, cause then yet again its breaking the rules of having to be 18 to post on Kickstarter and the daughter is 9. Either the girl posted it or her mother posted it. Either way, its wrong in the end.

She did admit her daughter is in public school too on the kickstarter page.

Looking at this Kickstarter, this is what I honestly saw: I have lots of money and can break the rules when I want, and I will teach my daughter that it's okay to break the rules when you have the money to do so. Who will really challenge me, when I have money and power cause otherwise I will ruin your name?

Another question would be, Does the end justify the means? The mom wants the girl to go to camp on money she learned how to earn on her own, but she can't do it that quickly on her own without outside help at her age and her brothers treating her like garbage (according to the mother). Does the means of breaking kickstarter's rules justify that?

http://i.imgur.com/zwyRWCa.jpg isn't going to help me believe the mother is not a manipulative mofo.

They don't only use them for external "winds", they also use them to measure for internal areas which need, for example, a certain amount of air extract etc. So basically it doesn't matter for measuring airspeed, because the handheld ones aren't necessarily designed for that.

They do need to have some kind of monitoring, crowdfunding is still relatively new. If it can't keep basic standards up, will it have a future, or will it be full of 419 scams soon?

It's weird to think that we've hit the point on the internet where people are so out of touch with what trolling is that they're just associating it with every bad thing anyone ever does on the internet.

At any rate, this seems like a definite "jump the shark" moment for Kickstarter. If they've decided they're just gonna pick and choose which of their own rules to enforce, they're just gonna open it up to anyone who wants to buy anything and not particularly feel like paying for it.
