Just finished Blood of Asaheim. Overall I liked it, although I got a bit irritated with the seemingly endless exposition and introspection. There's a somewhat fine line between brooding internal monologues and bolter porn, and BoA erred on the side of brooding for me. It's the loving Space Wolves dammit; don't start sperging about why Ingvar harbors doubts just as you're about to launch into a slaughter!

It was decent enough that I'm moderately curious to read some other stuff from the same author. It's about the Black Dragon chapter. Relatively (in)famous for the mutations you're talking about. I think this is the first time the fluff has done anything with their inner workings/feelings/traditions. Usually it's just a mention of their mutation.

Finally got around to finishing Angel Exterminatus. It's definitely "good" McNeill, though Fulgrim was a bit too Snidely Whiplash-y for my taste and all the Storm of Iron tie-ins at the end felt really forced. It did really make me want to see what happens next with Perturabo.

I've finished: Ravenor - which was pretty good, but not quite on Eisenhorn levels. A lot more predictable as well. Edit - Part of it may have been landing on a particular thread discussion page when reporting my impressions of Eisenhorn. Pariah - which had a lot of potential, bu turned out to be quite plodding. It seems as though future action will either have to be confined to this particular planet and involve the Scolae fellows, or waste a shitload of exposition. 15 Hours - decent enough for what it is (All is Quiet on the Western Front IN SPACE) but... you know, I could just directly to Remarque. There's a full collection on my shelf and everything. Dark Heresy - Apparently it's pretty hard to write outright bad Inquisition stuff, and Sandy doesn't even succumb to his habit of repeating himself (much). Shame there are only two books in the series atm. Space Hulk the Novel - I was kinda hoping for a comic about the Hulk smashing Space Marines. What I got instead: "There was intelligence in Auletio's eyes... It was something Lorenzo had never seen in the eyes of another Space Marine." Also, it turns out that Space Marines are a bit like dogs in that they can't shoot up. Pretty much everything else I've got atm is Space Marine / Imperial Guard stuff. Any of it really exceptionally good? (Besides Gaunt's Ghosts)

Having every single protagonist be someone who shows up in Storm of Iron is contrived as hell.

Just finished Battle of the Fang. I really enjoyed it and almost makes Bjorn a tragic figure in some ways, never to get the rest he deserves and feeling abandoned by his daddy.

It doesn't almost: Bjorn is a tragic figure through and through. While all the great heroes of his time left or passed on, his lot was to stay behind and play caretaker to an empire that sees him and the world he comes from as a misenterpreted myth. And each time he awakes he finds it crumbling more and more around the edges.

I'm reading Battle of the Fang right now and it owns. All the space wolves/fenris people rule, even the people who get like 3 pages like the defense orbital commander who releases the escape pods into the path of the incoming enemy ships to gently caress them one last time.

I finished Know No Fear last night and started on Battle of the Fang thanks to this thread: Know No Fear was great. I loved the personification of the Ultramarines. They are a lot more interesting than I first thought they'd be. I'm sad I don't know of any other stories with them in them that are well written. Battle of the Fang... is this going to turn into some weird furry erotica? I honestly can't tell yet, although I'm only a few pages in.

Which was a shame since I enjoyed the Iron Warrior's characters in this, and I enjoyed them in Storm of Iron, but when one character is mildly tempted by a daemon, then he's the Warsmith! I thought that was pretty lame. I did surprisingly enjoy the Raven Guard and Iron Hands that show up in it, as well as one of the first Salamander characters in the series (the novels, that is.)

Just finished 'The Greater Good.' Pretty good, but it doesn't explore the central premise as much as I would have liked. It does all come together nicely on the last page though. The only big criticism I have is that the footnotes tend to repeat themselves over and over. Here's to hoping the next trilogy's the best one yet.

I wouldn't necessarily say that certain factions are more fun than others (though I've yet to read anything that makes the Tyranids interesting) by Sandy really can't write an interesting / scary Tyranid/Orc encounter to save his life. (Oh yeah, now that the above comment mentions it, the Necron book was legit tense and intimidating) Edit - "Caine actually fought a whole bunch of stuff" seems to be a point in agreement with "then why are all the books focused on two particularly boring factions", rather than an argument against it. I've not finished the second Cain omnibus (the first one, Death or Glory isn't all too interesting), but I liked The Traitor's Hand most out of the first one because Chaos is the most interesting faction to fight. Maybe they should have Cain keep fighting them forever while shrugging off corruption.

My problem with the Greater Good is, despite the Fire warrior on the cover we didn't get any Imperial / Tau back to the wall cooperation. I kinda wanted to see Imperial and Tau working together

I read Fire Warrior when I was much younger so I might be a little off, but it's one of the few books that really conveys just how "chaotic" Chaos is. Its really well done, especially for something written when there wasn't much depth to the Tau and 40K fiction as a whole back then.
