Do you guys have any recommendations on good female-fronted metal bands that don't fall under the Nightwishy weewoo operatic umbrella? Not that there's anything wrong with that style, but it exists in spades and I'm trying to find a little variation.

List is comprised of, so far: Doro (naturally), Crystal Viper, A Sound of Thunder, Vandroya, Madder Mortem, Huntress, Stolen Babies, Sinergy, Triosphere, Mastercastle, and Crucified Barbara. Anything else I should take a look at? Keep in mind I haven't listened to all of those yet so I don't know how hit and miss of a list it is.

Seriously. I have been able to NOT listen to More Than Living obsessively over and over for a few days now, but it still blows my mind just how staggeringly good that song is.

As for other good non-operatic female fronted metal bands, Diablo Swing Orchestra. They pop up in this thread from time to time, but I think they're good enough to warrant some repetition. At the very least they're pretty goddamn unique.

Also, I like Arch Enemy, gently caress the haters.

Just might be my new favourite thing.

Also can someone explain the Arch Enemy hate to me? I haven't really listened to them and have no opinion either way but given that I don't have much of a developed ear for harsher vocals yet I'm not sure what seems to make them as "bad" as others have painted them as.

It's a boring retread of later-period Carcass, which makes sense given Mike Amott's prior gig.

as if all this was something more
than another footnote on a postcard from nowhere,
another chapter in the handbook for exercises in futility
For women in extreme metal, the only one coming to mind which hasn't been mentioned yet is Rachel from two of Sinister's albums. There was too much mike cupping for my tastes, and honestly little memorability among the songs, but this one was decent:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RfgIZgJXDM

For non-extreme metal there also was Power Symphony, but they were rather, er, not linkworthy.

And in crap news, the bassist for Polish band Hate has been found dead:

http://www.blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=188417

Blabbermouth posted:

Polish extreme metallers HATE have released the following statement:

"[During the] night [of] April 5-6 near the German town of Munchberg, our friend, best comrade and longtime bass player unexpectedly passed away. After the show in Stuttgart last night, he went to sleep and never woke up. We found him lifeless early in the morning and immediately called an ambulance. He was reanimated, but to no avail. Results of Slawek's (Slawomir 'Mortifer' Archangielskij) autopsy should be known soon. In this situation, we decided to cancel the remaining shows and return home. We gave detailed testimonies to the German police. We are shocked and shattered by his sudden, unexpected death. We mourn together with Slawek's family and friends."

Seems like they were just starting to get more attention, too. R.I.P.

Yeah, this is the primary reason. It seems like a boring cash-in, and while Angela Gossow is competent, she never struck me as anything more than that.

Anyway, one other on the non-operatic woman vocalist topic, Lullacry is superduper poppy (like, multiple truckdriver gear changes) but I liked Crucify My Heart:

So, it looks like Maiden are going to do another short string of dates in the US this fall. I wonder if this will be another Seventh Son of a Seventh Son theme or another throwback theme.

Iron Maiden have announced seven September U.S. shows with support from Megadeth. One special show in San Bernardino, CA has been dubbed ‘The Battle Of San Bernardino‘ and will also feature Anthrax, Testament and more. Dates for the trek can be found below:

09/03 Raleigh, NC – Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion
09/05 Nashville, TN – Bridgestone Arena
09/07 Kansas City, MO – Sprint Center
09/08 St. Louis, MO – Verizon Wireless
09/10 Austin, TX – 360 Amphitheater
09/12 Las Vegas, NV – Mandalay Bay Events Center
09/13 San Bernardino, CA – San Manuel Amphitheater (‘The Battle Of San Bernardino‘) (feat. Anthrax, Testament, Overkill and Sabaton)

Ticketing details can be found at Ironmaiden.com.
