The whole design and build took about 3 months (mostly weekends), I did the majority of it myself and just had a friend help me lift the roof on and fit the glass. The base is 1.3m x 1.3m, total height of 2.45m, door clearance is slightly under two metres, just enough so that I don't hit my head upon entering. I have a little over a metre square inside to move around in, which is ample for myself, a guitar and a couple of effects units. I'm debating whether I finish the outside any further or not, I had thought of carpet or vinyl wrapping it but I'm not offended by the sight of bare wood and it won't add anything to the function of the booth, and it will just inevitably have to come off whenever we move house next as the whole box will need disassembly as there is no way to fit it through the door or indeed even lift it due to the weight. I designed it so everything sort of slots together with lots of overlap on the edges to prevent sound leakage, and so that I can also disassemble and reconstruct it with minimal damage (will just need to break all the seals made by the acoustic sealant and reapply once rebuilt).

Yeah man they are really cool, I played one in the studio on a lovely LTD LP copy and it makes any guitar sound INSANELY good but go watch some of those routing videos and then think about doing that to any guitar you own.

[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
Welp, while browsing ebay price histories on samplers in preparation for selling my S2800, I sniffed out an Emu e6400 Classic for $20 with no bids. Threw in a min-bid and ended up winning it. I mean, it's not the Ultra, but I reckon it'll do quite well fitting in to my live PA project, which is pretty much trying to be an updating of 90's neurofunk anyways.

Mutable Instruments MIDIPal:

The MIDIpal is a smart and small MIDI processor. Insert it between a MIDI keyboard (or sequencer) and a MIDI sound module to unleash powerful compositional tools and effects. Arpeggiator, sequencer, MIDI filter, router, MIDI CC LFO and a lot more. I also grabbed an Alesis Q25, so I could have a small-ish real MIDI keyboard controller(USB and standard MIDI) to use with the MIDIPal. Very stoked at the life I can get out of some of my simpler synths with this thing. It's like a bolt on synth MIDI extender.

Here's the Carvin DC800 that I ordered. It looks much more orange/gold in person, almost like a completely different finish than the in-stock picture showed. It's also very sparkly, which this pic doesn't show off too well. I'm completely in love with it, the tung oiled neck feels fantastic and the guitar is lighter than I expected. Definitely gonna get another when I can afford it!

Tung oil on necks is the way to go. Sucks they don't offer a scale length beyond 27" or a reverse in-line headstock otherwise I'd totally get one just for the neck joint alone.

I am not using Imgur correctly. Little help?

Anyway, on to business:

All finished. Super playable, incredibly gorgeous (IMHO).
I had a JEM case that my Exotic Wood USA Custom came in, both like new. So I swapped the instruments with the cases.
I like the simple nickel screws and hardware, I *love* the pearloid plastics (see my home-built Strat-style for how it might look after 21 years) and I don't miss the scallops at the top four frets. I don't really notice the slightly rounder fretboard (400mm vs. 430mm) and it just feels like a JEM. The wood isn't *quite* as loud, and I think acoustically it resonates at a slightly more nasally frequency than my other basswood Ibanezes, but it's still acoustically loud and clear and sounds great through my rig.

Here you can clearly see what muike was referring to with respect to that line on the side of the neck at the volute. The headstock is finished with a shiny clear coat, but it ends at the volute and the rest of the back of the neck is a satin finish. You can see the change in this shot pretty clearly.

Also, all of my guitars have at least one push-pull switching potentiometer. I use it to wire the bridge pickup for series/parallel switching. The blue Exotic Wood USA Custom and the new RG471AH both have this switch on both the volume and tone pots: volume is the bridge 'bucker, tone is the neck. This guitar I did something a little different: My friend bought a Crunch Lab and I *really* enjoyed it. I actually liked the lower output parallel sound more than the full-gain series tone; so on this guitar I made a slight change: the default tone knob position (down) is parallel, and pulled up is series. I did not make any changes to the neck Evolution wiring because I haven't decided if I want to do the mod on that pickup. I like it a lot already, so I haven't put the extra work into it.

One of the QC issues I was afraid of was the straightness of the neck out of the pocket: were the outside strings equi-distant from the nice, rounded fret ends. In this case, there was nothing to worry about. The rosewood has some very open grain, so I hope that's ok.

And with the acquisition of the new JEM, I needed a new gear porn group shot (Not pictured - terrible Lotus Steinberger-copy bass, Peavey TNT100 Bass Amp, Student Classical Guitar, all of which are with my parents' being enjoyed by my Dad):

This thing only lets you adjust the truss rod from the heel, so I'm scared enough of putting the supplied 0.11-0.48 strings on it (it comes strung with 9s), let alone stringing it up for crazy Sonic Youth tunings. Apparently they don't use any strings lighter than 0.14.

Bought my first ever Rack Extension for Reason last night: the RPVerb

I tried it out a little so far with my two guitars (one acoustic-electric and one electric) and it sounds better than both of Reason's stock reverb units and my Electro-Harmonix Cathedral pedal. Not sure how that worked out because that's a $200 pedal that sounds amazing, but this somehow sounds better. I'm probably doing something wrong for that to happen, but whatever. I dig the hell out of its sound and I'll probably be using this exclusively in my recordings from now on.

For me, it was a breeze. I had downloaded the trial version and loved it, so I went back to Propellerhead's shop, entered my CC info, it updated the license on my USB key, I restarted Reason and that was it. It had no problems whatsoever working with my guitars or Reason's softsynths right off the bat.
v:shobon:v

Maybe because Rack Extensions are specifically made for Reason and don't work with any other DAW.

My first experience with REs was so nice that I'll definitely buy some more if I find more effects/instruments that are as useful and intuitive as this one.

Sorry you grabbed a guitar with one of the shittiest trems Ibanez ever made :silent:

The good news is once you get the hang of it it won't be a problem. There are a lot of guides out there, but I'll tell you the biggest trick right now: block it in the correct position when you put new string gauges on and intonate them, then remove the block and adjust the spring claw until everything is in tune. Voila perfectly set up trem

RPDelay has some major stability problems all around. You can program it into a state that brings the DAW crashing down. Luckily I got it for free.

Ableton Live 9 Standard Upgrade

IK Multimedia Ampeg SVX VST

I got Live 9 a little while back - it was a pretty critical upgrade for me. I'd been using Live 6 since it came out and was dying to use some of the newer functions. Found out the upgrade was cheap even though my version was like 10 years old ($300 off new)!

The Ampeg VST I got so I could get good bass tones again. I have an AxeFX and Guitar Rig 2 but I've never been able to get close to the tones I got miking up a bass cab. And since I no longer have a bass amp I've been working with not so great DI sounds.
I just spent 30 minutes putting together a 2min test, and was able to get a decent bass tone right out of the gate. With some tweaking and using the AxeFX as a distortion pedal I can probably get what I'm looking for.

*the IK authorization process is totally stupid though. I couldn't get the auth app to work, SVX standalone kept on asking me to authorize, and I eventually found out I had to install Amplitube Free to get Ampeg SVX to authorize. Even though I don't want AmpliTube free and don't care for the IK Custom Shop app it also installed. It made no sense; SVX worked fine without Amplitube free, it just wouldn't authorize and got stuck in trial mode.

I just got Amplitube Ampeg recently (already have most of their other stuff), and it does indeed sound really nice with minimal tweaking. Amp sims have gotten so good in the past few years that I almost never bother actually miking up and amp when I sit down to record something. I'm actually vaguely contemplating getting an OPC just so I can take that kind of versatility on the road.

Probably won't, though. Don't have the money right now.

Marshall JCM 900 Lead 1936 2x12 with two Celestion G12T-75's. It's the shittier MDF version but I got it for $250 at a pawn shop so whatever~* Plus I think I blew at least one speaker in my Legend 4x12 when I hooked up that Sunn Concert Slave, and it also has Celestion G12t-75's, so essentially I paid for two replacement speakers and got a Marshall cab for free.

Art Pro MPA II Reference Series 2x12AX7 tube mic pre. Musiciansfriend had these on for $199 about a month ago with free shipping to Canada. I should have bought two, because now they're $399.

Art Pro Channel 3x12AX7 mic pre/compressor/para EQ. Used, from Long & McQuade, $160.

Other misc junk that I won't upload pictures of because imgur is hit or miss today:
• Callaham ABR-1
• Unplated Nickel P90 covers
• A bunch of old Tungsram 12AX7's, for either my guitar amps or the mic pre's, not sure yet.
• A 12AX* to 6SL7 octal tube conversion socket (for shits and giggles)

Edit: Oh yeah, and I got a black label 80's Japan-made Boss SD-1 for $50 at a pawn shop that also had one of the newer less sought-after Taiwanese SD-1's for $170. That store has no idea what they're doing, and the BF-3 I traded them six years ago is still sitting on the shelf with an asking price of more than what Boss charges for them new.
