So when they called Obama a coon, it was OK because it was a joke. I swear, people forget that the freedom of speech covers criticism too. Southpark is singlehandedly responsible for disseminating a racial slur against red-haired people, I don't think they care. Babylon Astronaut fucked around with this message at 03:28 on May 3, 2013 |

The truth is in the middle, everyone sucks, no one really knows so why bother, etc etc. And it has links to Reason and NYT pieces about the South Park libertarian phenomenon. While I doubt anyone in a position of authority has modeled his or herself after Eric Cartman, the show definitely has taken up a place within the greater political discussion.

It's a lovely show by guys who are obsessed with cultural resentments that have been around for decades on the right: "YOU'RE NOT SMARTER THAN ME ROB REINER!!!!" It's the same arguments I hear from people on facebook who don't actually know anything about specifics but feel the need to have an opinion on the matter. I have multiple friends, in their late 20s and thirties, who still cite arguments I recognize from South Park. It's just a quick easy position to take when you have no idea about current events.

South Park is great when they're just doing character-based comedy or whatever- the Lord of the Rings episode is fantastic- but the instant they think they have some sort of social or political point to make, it turns into terrible poo poo.

Never in my life did I hear the term "ginger" or the idea of "gingers don't have souls" before that particular episode of South Park aired. I understand that it was an established thing that the South Park creators didn't make up out of thin air, but you're bonkers if you don't think they had huge hand in popularizing it in America. If they can popularize one lovely idea, they obviously have the cultural pull to popularize others.

One last thing about Hannity vs. South Park. I think the crux of my problem with comparing Hannity to South Park is that I've never had one of my friends who I regard as intelligent and generally not a horrible bigot parrot quotes/arguments from Hannity or defend him as a reasonable cultural entity or whatever. Same goes for any of the ultra-conservative personalities out there. Wish I could say the same about South Park. Although I'd argue that the libertarian agenda in Southpark is fairly obvious, it isn't obvious to most viewers that I talk to and it certainly isn't as explicit as the neoconservative agenda is on Hannity's show just by virtue of one being a cartoon comedy and the other being a talk show. It is still comparing apples to oranges but I just wanted to point out why I think South Park is much more insidious. I was gonna say maybe this isn't the right venue for unraveling the poisonous nature of South Park but their more political/topical episodes do in a way qualify as "Right Wing Media" in my mind.

Both South Park and Penn&Teller have little actual methodology for their preaching: it's a melange of whatever is annoying them at the moment + what they think they can demolish in an entertaining fashion. Regarding P&E, it was glaringly obvious in their 'Cheerleading' episode. See, in THAT case the big bad government totally should change its parameters of 'sport' to be more inclusive and give these cute girls better health care on the public dime! To a lesser degree, it was also the case in their episode about Old People: they brought in Maddox (from the Greatest Page in the Universe) ans used his patent hyperbole as serious arguments they could demolish. I guess it's hard to grandstand against a position when no one holds it. As for South Park, one needs only watch one of M&T's interviews to see that they consider themselves valid commentators on all things, so that's how they should be treated. I love how in one episode they were all rabid about "Scientology is a ridiculous fraud and it sucks!" and in a later one it's "Mormonism is fake and a fraud but it helps people lead happy lives, so back off!!". My guess is that the difference is entirely due to them knowing/respecting some mormon person while Scientologists occupy the same mental space as hippies in their universe: people who have no real impact in their lives, but sound annoying.

I don't even think it's a matter of Obama being all that slick it's just that when your elected officials main concerns are that the president is some kind of Islamist Manchurian Candidate who is a literal super villian there's not much room for getting outraged about anything else.

Here's something stupid. NUTS… Joe Biden Talks About ‘Deliverance’ Man Rape to Victims Support Network (Video) So, Biden made a very good analogy at a recent speech for lawyers that help victims of domestic abuse. Somehow, Bridget Johnson and Jim Hoft found a way to take offense at this and call him a doofus. The GOP really needs to find a way to learn some sort of lesson from the 'rape situation' they had last year. Repealing the 17th became the new hot fad after 2008. I guess it's not surprising, given the GOP's brazen push to take over state legislatures. They can already keep a hold of the House for a few more cycles, just based on redistricting and new census results, and if they were able to abolish the 17th, they could take over the Senate again. Then we could end up in this weird place where (assuming Texas flips) the Dems have a lock on the Executive and the GOP permanently controls the Legislative.
